EAST-WEST CENTER'S executive education

Asia-Pacific region and the United States a significant

THE EAST-WEST CENTER

THEEAST-WEST CENTER has long been a primary

source of research and education on Asia-Pacificissues. Its extensive connections throughout the region-in East Asia, the ASEAN countries, South Asia and thePacific Islands-provide a wealth of resources for the

development of productive relationships and strategicvision.

Among the many current research projects of theEast-West Center is one aimed at developing economicpolicies for increasing trade and investment opportunitiesin the ASEAN countries, a second examining demo-

graphic trends that determine spending and savingshabits and labor markets in South Korea, Taiwan,

Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, a third

studying entrepreneurship and other developmentprocesses in East and Southeast Asia, and a fourthstudying energy requirements and resources in Japan,China and the Soviet Union.

Executives from diverse countries throughout the

Japanese and Korean executives to examine American andSoutheast Asian workforce issues, American executives tounderstand Asian management techniques that have beenso successful in promoting innovation and productivity,and United States and Japanese managers to identify thecriteria for effective strategic collaborations.

International Study Tours: Asia-Pacificand the United StatesAugust 5-18, 1991

THISIS A TWO-WEEK study tour program that will

commence with cross-cultural briefings at the East-West Center in Honolulu and then embark on tours intwo directions. Asia-Pacific executives will travel to fivelocations in the United States where they will meet topcorporate executives of manufacturing and serviceindustry companies and tour plants and facilities where

"cutting edge" manufacturing and managementtechniques are deployed. United States executives willtravel to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore for similar

meetings and tours. On their return, the executives willconvene in a joint session in Honolulu to discuss theirexperiences and compare management techniques. The

program will be fast-paced and intensive, providingvaluable opportunities for interaction with businessleaders in the host countries.

THEEAST-WEST CENTER'S executive programs are

held in modern conference facilities on the Center's21-acre campus adjacent to the University of Hawaii.

Lodging is at a nearby Waikiki hotel. Transportation isprovided for the short distance between the hotel and theCenter.

Each program includes luncheons with guestspeakers and one or more social evenings. All functionsand sessions are designed to promote interaction and

dialogue among participants and faculty.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

IN ORDER TO ENHANCE opportunities for interactionamong participants, enrollment in the East-West

Center's executive education programs is limited toapproximately 35 participants for each of the one-week

programs and 30 for the study tour program (15 in eachtour group). Early application is therefore encouraged.Applications should be submitted no later than onemonth in advance of the one-week programs and twomonths in advance of the study tour program.

Criteria used in evaluating applications include

management level and experience, responsibilities,business sector, and geographic and national diversity.

COST

THEREGISTRATION FEE for a one-week program,

including luncheons and program materials, is $2,000.The fee for the study tour program, including luncheons,dinners and program materials, is $7,500. Hotel accommo-dations, and transportation for the study tour program,will be arranged by the Center at special rates. Fees aresubject to change without notice and will be invoicedupon notification of acceptance. Withdrawals within 30days of a program will be charged 50% of the fee andwithdrawals within one week will be charged the entirefee. However, participant replacement may be made atany time prior to commencement of the program.
