'n Luiperd mannetjie (4-5 jaar oud) het `n baie slegte wond opgedoen in ̀ n poging om homself te bevry van die strik om sy borskas. Soos gesien kan word op die foto’s het die strik deur al die borsspiere gesny tot op die been. Twee seuns het vis gevang in die riviertjie by Coromandel (Dullstroompad) Vrydagmiddag. Hulle het gesien iets sit vas naby die rivier. Hulle het vir mense gesê wat daar naby gewerk het en hulle het op hul beurt die Mpumalanga Parke en Toerisme Agentskap (MTPA) gebel. Die Lydenburg Diere Spreekkamer is gebel om dringend hulp te kom verleen. Dr. Wilmar Trümpelmann kon egter daarin slaag om die wonde mooi skoon te kry, ontsmet en te heg. Die wond behoort mooi te genees volgens hom. Die luiperd is tans by `n rehabilitasiesentrum naby Middelburg waar daar toesig gehou kan word oor sy herstel en dit sal weer vrygelaat word sodra die wond genees het. Dit gaan egter tans baie goed met hom.As die spiere wel geheg het na 'n aantal weke, sal die luiperd vrygelaat word nadat 'n geskikte vrylatingsplek geïdentifiseer is. “Die publiek moet bewus gemaak word van die skade wat strikke doen. Verskeie diere word dood aangetref in strikke en dit kan voorkom word deur mense bewus te maak van die pyn en lyding wat veroorsaak word, ” het dr. Trumpelmann gesê.Mnr. Tommie Steyn (MPTA) was ook op die toneel en het alle vrywilligers bedank wat die luiperd te hulp gesnel het. “Daar was soveel noodgevalle met ook renosters (elders in omgewing) dat almal ingespan is Vrydag,” het hy gesê.M n r . G e r r i e C a m a c h o , M T P A Roofdierwetenskaplike, het gesê die verskillende grondeienaars wat aangrensend aan mekaar is, se samewerking is noodsaakl ik. Die afgelope naweek was ‘n gesin (van Johannesburg) met vakansie en oppad vanaf Nelspruit na Burgersfort om te gaan kuier vir hul familie te Burgersfort. By die eerste stop (vanaf Lydenburg) het die lig groen gegaan en die mense wat die stop beman het gewys hulle kan ry. By die haarnaald-draai het daar ‘n voertuig van voor gekom. Gelukkig het die mense van JHB stadig gery omdat hulle nie die pad ken nie. Ons doen ‘n ernstige beroep op motoriste wat gebruik maak van die pas om asseblief stadig te ry en alhoewel jy ryvoorrang kry van die persone wat by die stop, wees versigtig want jy weet nie of daar miskien net nog ‘n voertuig of vragmotor in aantog is nie.

Budget breakdownThe MEC FOR FINANCE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & TOURISMHON SIKHUMBUZO KHOLWANE (MPL) recently gave the Budget of the DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE. There are quite a few key points consumers and tax payers should take note of: The Province will spend R18.5 billion on infrastructure built programme in the next five years. The Department of Finance has budgeted R70 million 679 thousand to ensure a sustained delivery of Information Technology services to the Provincial Government.S k i l l s d e v e l o p m e n t f o r f i n a n c i a l management: The Department has over the past years rolled out skills development opportunities to improve capacity in transversal functions such as supply chain management, financial accounting, and assets management amongst others.We have set aside R900 thousand to rollout the S C M t r a i n i n g p r o g r a m m e f o r o f f i c i a l s i n t h e provincial government a n d l o c a l municipalities. We will enrol 25 officials on a one-yearcertificate programme with the University of Pretoria.

The investment in skills development is intended to capacitate the officials to fully implement the SCM to take the province forward with credible supply chain processes. Division of allocationsThe Department receives an allocation amounting to R268.1 million for the financial yearending 31 March 2014. ALMAL vertel alles in die Weskaap werk omdat die DA daar aan bewind is. Dit is so. Maar Jill en Jacques was laasweek in Durban met vakansie. En volgens hulle werk

alles redelik goed daar. Die ANC is daar aan bewind. Hulle vertel dat die laaste slaggate in die pad met hulle rit af, op die Dullstroom pad en naby Warburton was. In Natal is al die padkante skoon gesny. Verkeersmense is volop en doen hulle werk. In en om Durban is oral Polisie op patrollie en dit laat besoekers veilig voel. Die vriendelikheid en behulpsaamheid van al die mense daar is verstommend beter. Hulle het by dieselfde kettingwinkels inkope gedoen as wat ons hier het, maar dit lyk asof dit nie dieselfde groep is nie, want

hulle het oral vriendelike kliëntediens ervaar. Die paaie in KZN is pragtig. Al die dorpies is skoon, verkeersligte werk, daar is nêrens riool in die strate nie ens. Die vraag is waarom gaan dit so sleg in Mpumalanga? Die antwoord my liewe vriende is eenvoudig. Van goeie, vriendelike diens tot by die infrastruktuur is dit eenvoudig.Ons sit hier bloot met ’n swakker gehalte mens. As jy beperkte menseverhoudings en intellek het, is die resultaat van wat ons mee te kampe het voor die hand liggend.Bewys my verkeerd!

Ruby het eienaardige eetgewoontes met tye. Maar Botswana is nêrens. Selfs in die hoogste kringe van die beskawing met honderde huishoudsters verdwyn goed sonder rede. By ons het Botswana toe voete gekry. Ja, Botswana. Krap maar julle koppe want hoe kan ’n land dan net verdwyn. ’n Klein regstelling van my kant, Botswana is my bos sleutels van die huis, hekke ens. Dit heet so weens die sleutelhouer. Die naam Botswana is met krale uitgewerk. En is gekoop toe ek en my ma 'n paar jaar gelede op safari in Botswana was. CRAZY American speedologist, John Hennessey, has revealed his successor to the 928kW Venom GT. It will be known by the name Venom ‘F5’ and that refers to the Fujita tornado scale which ranks winds in an F5 category of 261mph, or 420kph. It is a fitting name for the next-generation Venom speed machine which aims to set a top speed in excess of 465kph.

Engineering a car for optimal top speed takes into account a few key factors; namely low weight, low drag and high power – and the Texas-built supercar promises to achieve velocities ‘previously unimagined’ by a series-production car. The Venom F5 will be an all-new design and one that hopes to offer improved aerodynamics. ‘We learned a great deal during the development of the Venom GT in breaking the 270mph (434kph) barrier, and we look toward to raising the performance bar even higher,’ says John Hennessey.

To ensure the Venom F5 goes quicker than the GT, and potentially onto a Bugatti Veyron SS-beating world record speed, the body is all carbon fibre and the drag coefficient drops from 0.44 to below 0.40Cd, while still generating enough downforce via underbody venturis, a rear diffuser and rear wing to keep it stable.

The 7.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is still under development but the turbos for the longitudinally mounted engine will be bigger, as will the intercoolers. Power is predicted to exceed 1000kW when the engine is finally bolted into place. Exclusive use of carbon fibre for the body means kerb weight falls below 1300kg, but that is marginally heavier than the Venom GT.

John Hennessey believes the F5 will eclipse the GT’s current acceleration record of 14.51sec to 200mph (320kph) and a clever new traction control system and new single clutch paddle-shift transmission will help the F5’s accelerative abilities in doing so.

The Venom GT will continue to be offered. At present, 16 cars of the 29-car total production run have been sold. A full reveal is scheduled for the Venom F5 in 2015 and deliveries will kick off toward the end of 2016. Hennessey reportedly plans to make 30 of the F5s and price them from $1.3 million, or R14-million.

HONDA SA replaced its aging Accord with an all-new model. Apart from being 160mm-longer, cabin room has increased significantly with rear legroom benefitting from a 70mm boost in wheelbase. The interior style speaks familiar ‘Honda’, but with an American accent. It’s less sporty, more relaxed luxury where satin chrome meets wood grain-patterned insets and padded surfaces. Below the main information and function select display is a new touchscreen media unit, which adds an element of sophistication.

As you’d expect, the standard equipment list is long. Even the base 2.0 Elegance model features leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, cruise control, dual-zone air-con, hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring and parking sensors with a rear view camera, just to pick out the headliners. The 2.4 Executive model adds 18-inch rims and a sunroof to full LED headlights with high beam assistance, cornering lights, keyless entry and gear shift paddles behind the steering wheel. Range-topping 3.5 V6 Exclusive spec shows off the full gamut of Honda’s partial-autonomous driver aids including collision mitigation braking, lane keeping and adaptive cruise control. Used in conjunction, this car will accelerate, brake and steer itself, though only for a short distance before it demands that the driver take hold of the reins before re-activating the lane keeping system – a legal requirement.

It’s pretty cool, but so much more than just a party trick. The final bit of cool kit is what Honda calls its ‘Lanewatch Blindspot Display’. Instead of just flashing a warning symbol in your side mirror as other makers do, the Accord Exclusive has a camera built into the left side mirror that displays your blindspot in real time on the central display. The image is activated automatically when the left indicator is used, but also has an always-on setting. It’s another brilliant addition, though you still have to look over your shoulder when moving across to the right.

An all-petrol engine line-up starts with the 2.0-litre petrol unit delivering 114kW and 190Nm through a five speed automatic gearbox. Paddles in the 2.4-litre four offer much more interaction, allowing you to hold gears like a manual when required. The best bit though is the actual engine. Where the old 2.4 felt obese, this thoroughly re-engineered unit feels as up-to-date as any un-blown petrol. Although down on power, at 132kW, the direct-injection motor peaks earlier in the rev range aiding drivability no end. Reduced friction and engine mass help make it lighter on fuel as well. It would be the star of the show were it not for the introduction of a new 3.5-litre V6 to head the range. Syrupy smooth and commendably quiet, the V6 is also equipped with cylinder shut-off tech that allows it to run in single-bank three or V4 mode under light or partial loads. Given its 207kW/339Nm outputs, a combined cycle figure of 9.2l/100km is surprisingly good.

Driving the new Accord reveals other surprises. The steering’s much lighter than before and the front suspension change from double wishbone to a simpler strut setup means the handling isn’t quite as sharp. On the upside, the ride comfort has improved, but despite the added compliancy it never feels wallowy, thanks mostly to an increase in torsional rigidity. Visibly larger than the old Accord, strong crease lines along the flanks aim to pull in the longer overhangs. Styling is neat enough at the front end, but pretty generic out back. It’s not an exciting to car to look at but excels in the areas of space, comfort and convenience, and with stellar sales in the USA, you have to believe that’s what American Accord buyers want. Honda SA has hedged its bets that South African consumers will agree.

My toets van die nuwe Opel Corsa 1.4T Enjoy, het weer bevestig dat hierdie uitstekende motors is. Die Corsa is egter nie foutloos nie. Meer hieroor later.Die reeks is beperk tot ’n 1.4 Essentia, die 1.4 Turbo Enjoy en natuurlik die OPC. Die 1.4 Turbo maak 88kW en 175Nm en die 5-spoed ratkas werk goed. Daar is vierwiel skyfremme met ABS en EBD, en kragstuur wat in-en-uit en op-en-af verstelbaar is met afstandbeheerde kontroles op die stuurwiel. Dagligryligte, elektriese spiëels, kragruite voor, lugversorger, alarm / immobiliseerder, afstand sluit, ISOFIX hegpunte vir babastoeltjies, twee lugsakke, radio / cd met USB / AUX in, en Bloutand is standaard.Daar is nie togbeheer, leersitplekke, kragruite agter, klimaatbeheer, gesplete agtersitplek wat vou en ’n ritrekenaar nie. Die paneelkissie is baie vlak. En dit vat my kritiek saam. In sy prysklas het die Corsa baie sterk kompetisie, meeste met 6-spoed ratkaste, wat bogenoemde alles as standaard toerusting bied. Mense koop deesdae motors met ketoetertjies. Hulle kyk nie na ingeboude veiligheid, Duitse gehalte, en bestuurplesier nie. Die ding moet werk en hy moet al die klokkies en fluitjies in hê.So, waarom is die Corsa Turbo ’n goeie motor en waarom moet voornemende kopers daarna kyk? In die eerste plek is die gehalte, stewigheid en ingeboude veiligheid wat jy nie kan sien nie, baie belangrik.Maar, jy moet hom gaan ry. Baie min en glo my hulle is min, motors bied vandag nog vir die entoesiastiese bestuurder louter bestuursplesier. Iets wat jy met jou boude kan voel. Iets wat ’n glimlag op jou gevreet sit. BMW het altyd gepraat van louter bestuursplesier. Wel, Opel is een van min voorwieltrek motors wat dit vir jou bied, van die Kadett en Monza se dae af.En dit is steeds daar. Meer as by die kompetisie in dié prysklas met al die klokkies. Ek het die Turbo uitgevat op die pad en hom gery op soek na daardie “magic” wat my nog laat glimlag en dit is daar. Die enjin trek goed, hoewel dit nie ’n renmotor is nie. Dit trek skoon en glad, bou verstommend spoed en die onderstel is fenomenaal. Jy kan die een oomblik op 160 sit, die remme raak en swaai vir ’n slaggat, vet gee en daar kook jy weer. Die remme, gekombineer met die vasvoetige onderstel maak hierdie motor. En dit rit is nie kliphard nie. Opel kon ’n sagte rit met goeie hantering kombineer.Teen 120 draai die enjin teen 3 000 en teen 140 teen 3 500, so brandstofverbruik sal goed wees. Vir my sal hy egter dors wees, want jy sal my selde op die spoedbeperking kan hou met dié motor. Ek sal met hom speel. Ek sal sy uiterstes gaan soek en hy sal my besig (en wakker) hou en laat lekker kry waar ek ry.Sal ek hom aanbeveel? As jy regtig kan bestuur en betrokke wil wees by die bestuurservaring, ongetwyfeld ja. Hierdie is ’n ware Opel. Lekerrrr... Andre Coetzee.

THE first airbag patents were filed in 1951 and published two years later by engineers Walter Linderer (from Germany) and John Hetrick (from the US). The world had to wait until the 1970s before this safety feature debuted on production cars. Today, we have front, knee, side, roof, seatbelt and even external airbags for pedestrian protection.

The function of an airbag is to distribute the impact pressure on the human body during an accident over as large an area as possible. This lessens the force-per-unit area and lowers the risk of bodily harm. In the event of a frontal crash with severe deceleration, the occupants’ bodies continue in the direction of travel at roughly the speed of the vehicle before impact. The initial retardation of the torso is the responsibility of the primary safety systems (seatbelts with pretensioners), but other parts such as the head, arms and legs still move forward. The job of the airbags is to prevent these parts from impacting hard areas in the cabin such as the dashboard and steering wheel. The compressible air cushion also provides a longer impact distance that, in turn, lessens the peak deceleration experienced by the human body.

As an example the Ford EcoSport has six airbags, two side-impact sensors fitted at the bottom of the B-pillars, seatbelt and occupancy-detection switches, a front-impact severity sensor, the instrument cluster (which displays information on the airbag system) and the restraint-control module (RCM). The RCM contains the algorithms that predict accident severity and it then decides if and which of the airbags should deploy. It’s connected to the switches and accelerometers via the controlled area network (CAN) bus and uses the signals as an input to the deployment algorithms. Once a crash has been identified by the RCM, the crash signal is sent to the other control units that can switch on the hazard lights, unlock the vehicle, deactivate the fuel-supply system (or disconnect the battery of electric vehicles) and even make an emergency call if Internet connectivity is available.

The airbag consists of a thin nylon bag folded up, with corn starch, French chalk or talcum powder acting as the lubricant during deployment (the white powder is evident after deployment). Initial designs used compressed air (explaining the origin of the name), but it soon became clear that the inflation process took too long. In later designs, inflation pressure was provided by a pyrotechnical chemical reaction between sodium azide (NaN3), potassium nitrate (KNO3) and silicon dioxide (SiO2) to produce nitrogen gas, which is triggered in the solid-state propellant by a detonator. Currently, there is a drive to find alternative compounds that deliver the same result but with fewer toxic by-products. An airbag has small perforations that allow it to deflate after deployment to allow occupants to exit the vehicle quickly after a severe crash.

In order to be sold in a stringently regulated market such as Europe, vehicles must meet ECE approval regulations, including crash requirements. EuroNCAP has raised these requirements to an even higher level, and conducts its own independent crash testing of new vehicles. Owing to the widespread publicity EuroNCAP tests garner, manufacturers have been forced to increase the safety features of their vehicles to score a higher crash rating. NCAP tests the following:

Frontal car-to-car impact: head-on collision at 64 km/h at 40% overlap.Side car-to-car impact: side-on with impact speed at 50 km/h.Side-pole impact: a solid pole hits the vehicle on its B-pillar at 29 km/h.Pedestrian protection: this assesses the bumper/bonnet’s performance when colliding with a pedestrian. Child protection: restraint system, including Isofix, is checked. Whiplash testing: what’s the vehicle’s level of seat support when it sustains a rear-end collision. Safety assists: NCAP testing offers additional points for seatbelt reminders, speed warnings, etc.

Engineers use these crash tests to determine the “must-deploy” thresholds for the airbags. Similar crashes at slightly higher and lower speeds are also conducted to validate the calibration thresholds. The problem facing the engineers who work on the calibration of crash algorithms is finding a balance between a false detection (premature deployment) or not deploying in the event of a severe crash. In order to minimise unwanted (incorrect) deployments, the calibration considers data from other types of non-critical events that the vehicle may see under abusive conditions, including dynamic driving and operation on rough roads, curb hits and gravel roads. Ford, for example, also uses tests that include door slams, ball strikes, shopping-trolley hits and bicycle accidents.

It is important to note that it is impossible to calibrate the system for all types of road accidents because they are so varied. However, a vehicle that scored a positive NCAP rating provides good occupant protection. The EcoSport managed to score a four-star overall rating and 93% in the adult-occupant-protection tests. It failed to score a fifth because the engineers had concerns regarding its pedestrian protection and the fact that speed-limitation assistance is not fitted.

The restraint-control module analyses the signals from the accelerometers and crash switches on a real-time basis to establish whether an airbag-deployment threshold has been breached. Both the magnitude of the acceleration and the duration thereof are important in the decision-making process. As speed is of utmost importance, the task rate of the crash signals are faster than 8 ms and the total time it takes from the crash to a fully inflated frontal airbag is about 40 ms.

The safety benefits of airbags have undoubtedly been proven, as many serious injuries have been prevented and countless lives saved. But these systems still undergo constant refinement. Lately, the inflation pressure of some airbags can be controlled according to the severity of the crash, as well as the seatbelt-restraint reaction to avoid injuries owing to excessive airbag inflation. The number of airbags in modern vehicles will keep growing, to the point where the occupants

are enveloped by a cushion of air in a severe accident.

Of course, prevention is better than cure, and many active-safety technologies such as ABS, ESC, lane-keeping warnings and automatic braking have lowered the number of accidents. The automotive world might even reach a point where airbags won’t need to deploy simply because autonomous vehicles will have removed the weakest link – the driver – and so be able to avoid accidents completely.

Small children and infants are particularly vulnerable to injury or even death due to the extreme forces exerted by a deploying airbag. That’s why cars offer the option to switch off the front passenger airbag when a child seat is installed. It’s also important to sit far enough away from the steering wheel or dashboard to avoid injuries when the airbag activates. That said, the life-saving capabilities of airbags far outweigh the risks of sustaining injury.

A Steering Committee to plan the formation of a Bird Club affiliated to BirdLife South Africa has been formed under the chairmanship of George Skinner, a seasoned birder from Gauteng, who is shortly to be a permanent resident at Walkersons Private Estate near Dullstroom. The Steering Committee is a good mix of experienced locals from Dullstroom, members of Endangered Wildlife Trust and of the Mpumalanga Tourism Department, and Gauteng birders with holiday homes in Dullstroom.The club has been named the Escarpment Bird Club and will differ from the usual perception of a bird club essentially focused on bird-watching. What is planned is a bird, and conservation club. The club is intended to be broad-based, drawing members from the Blyde River Canyon in the north to Chrissiesmeer in the south, inclusive of the towns of Ohrigstad, G raskop , Lydenbu rg , Du l l s t r oom, Machadadorp, Belfast, Carolina and Ermelo. The aim is to be masters of the escarpment area with extensive knowledge of its geography, birding hot-spots, local special species, the seasonability of vlei’s and wetlands, the grasslands, forests and special destinations within the region such as Verloren Vallei, Doornkop Wildlife and Fishing Estate, Verlorenkloof, Millstream,

Highlandgate Golf Estate, Mount Sheba, the Blyde River Canyon and the Mpumalanga Lakes District.The Club intends to document all the hot-spots on a birding route from the Mpumalanga Lake District in the south, and along the escarpment up to Mount Sheba and Blyde River Canyon in the north, in an Escarpment Birding Route publication. This will also include a register of accredited Birder Friendly Accommodation establishments, and the identification of the bird species that can be seen in these places.The club will also be facilitating the monitoring of Important Birding and Biodiversity Areas ( IBAs) , p romot ing and encourag ing stewardship and 'Protected Status' over the greater portion of the Steenkampsberg IBA, and the region as has been successfully achieved in The Mpumalanga Lakes District in Chrissiesmeer, and soon to be announced for Lakenvlei. This will include engaging with farmers in support of the fine efforts from BirdLife South Africa and the Endangered Wildlife Trust in the above two success stories, and in conservation best practice. By so doing the club will strive to win over the support of farmers to permit monitoring and visiting places of special interest on their farms. To this end the club welcomes R1000 donations from lodges, resorts, estates, game farms, corporates and local businesses throughout the region which can see the growth in tourism and business benefits. Two River Platinum supports the initiative for a fundraising Golf day for the old age home, Rusoord. It will be held on Saturday the 16th August 2014. This is the only old age home in the Lydenburg, Steelpoort, Burgersfort, Sabie and Graskop areas. They currently have 20 bedridden people and 20 which are wheelchair bound and also a few who are suffering from Alzheimer's. TRP wants to raise funds for Rusoord.
