Heightsafety Training Academy presents its first Heightsafety One Stop Training Hub which offers an onsite training solution for safe working-at-heights. This Hub is a satellite campus providing students with a quality training infrastructure accessible to ALL mines and contractors in the Eastern Limb area. The Training Hub was officially launched on 28 July 2013 with a red ribbon ceremony at Xstrata Alloys Steelpoort Training Centre. Guests were entertained by observing various advanced Fall Arrest, Rope Access and Rope Rescue manoeuvres at the training facility. Heightsafety's Training Hub incorporates all aspects of Fall arrest, Rope access and Rope rescue training courses. It is a real world simulator with pre-installed lifelines, ladders, scaffold structures and lattice structures. This prefabricated and self-contained training facility offers a number of advantages to the industry. A major benefit for trainees will be that they will not have to leave their homes for extended periods. This is a great expense to the employer and causes disruption in the family life of employees. The employer is also able to provide a comfortable training environment which will add value to the training experience allowing trainees to fully concentrate on the

This is an open letter from Afriforum to the Thaba Chweu Municipality. The Council received enough time to respond and were aware that this letter will be published in the media if no reply was given within the time frame:NEWLY introduced fixed charge for electricity imposed on business purchasing their electricity on the pre paid basis. We would hereby like to urgently request that you with immediate effect stop charging all business owners purchasing their electricity on a prepaid basis, the monthly fixed charge and for the following reasons:* According to our information, the Council while under administration, and while Mr Gerhard Landman was the appointed CFO, negotiated with business owners to convert to the prepaid method of purchasing electricity. As an incentive to business, Council at that time stated that all businesses who agreed to convert to this method of purchasing their electricity would be exempted from the monthly fix charge. The benefits for Council were the following:1) Council would not have to read the meters of these businesses on a monthly basis11) Council would not have to administer these accounts on a monthly basis111) Council would not need to be concerned about the possibility of bad debts as far as these business (accounts) were concerned.Furthermore I would like to state that:All the businesses who decided to convert to the prepaid system at that time, did so on the understanding that they would benefit from this in that they would then not have to pay the fixed monthly charge.All businesses who started up after that time and opened consumer accounts with the Council and then agreed to purchase the electricity on the 'prepaid basis' were allowed

How does the Council justify charging a small business owner R670 odd per month just for the privilege to buy electricity if the business is only using R400 or so worth of electricity. We as AfriForum has checked what other councils are doing in this regard at Steve Tshwete Municipality for instance we were informed that only business with a circuit breaker of 80A and more are charged a fixed charge in other words that would exclude most small businesses. That in our view is a much more acceptable agreement. Please give this your urgent consideration and advise us of your decision within seven working days, failing this we will apply for an urgent court interdict to put an end to this malpractice. Madiba is misbruik

IT has now been one year since the North Gauteng High Court interdicted the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport from evicting Pilgrim's Rest business owners from their business premises, and granted the applicants the right to file a review of the flawed 2011/12 tender process. Sadly, to date, the Department has not fully complied with the court order and has failed to provide all the necessary documentation to the North Gauteng High court, to enable the continuation of the review application. The DA suspects that many of these documents required for the review process are physically not available, justifying Justice J. Makgoba's comments of a deeply flawed bidding and adjudication process. The Department's non-compliance has had a devastating effect on Pilgrim's Rest and the local economy. Over the past year a number of businesses have closed their doors, and as the uncertainty of business prospects continues, desperately needed jobs are lost while tourism numbers continue to decline. With none of the existing businesses receiving any further correspondence on the leases of the buildings they occupy and no mention of any future plans for this historic town, the ultimate demise of Pilgrim's Rest is imminent. The Department's inaction further affirms the DA's position that under the leadership of its HOD, Mr Kgopane Mohlasedi, the entire tender process was rigged and manipulated to serve the interest of the politically well-connected. To this end, the DA will write to the chairperson of the portfolio committee for Public Works, Roads and Transport and Community Safety Security and Liaison Mr JL Mahlangu, requesting him to summon MEC Mahlangu and HOD Mohlasedi to give account on their failure to comply to the high court order, and to present the department's future plans for a sustainable Pilgrim's Rest.

Makkie en Piet Ras groet Lydenburg en het voor hul ‘groot trek’ ’n skenking aan Lelievlei en LAPSAR (Longtom Animal Protection and Rescue Services) gemaak. Die egpaar is jare lange inwoners van die dorp en verhuis na Kuilsrivier. Hulle het hondetruie en komberse aan hierdie twee nie-winsgewende organisasies geskenk.Andri Rousseau, Frik Rousseau, Direkteur van Lelievlei se vrou, het die skenkings namens LAPSAR en Lelievlei ontvang. Andri het twee jaar saam met Piet by die destydse LVK Lydenburg Voorspoed Koöperasie gewerk en saam met Makkie 17 jaar by die Thaba Chweu Munisipaliteit. Andri beskou Makkie, Johan Momberg en Isaac Moshoadiba as die beste amptenare saam met wie sy gewerk het. Piet en Andri is reeds langer as 35 jaar vriende. Om twee sulke geliefde inwoners te groet is Lydenburg se verlies en Kuilsrivier se wins.

Hierdie honde seeienaar het nie opgedaag nie

Mnr. George Floyd is baie ernstig op soek na ’n ene mnr. Danie Roeloffze, wat sy hond by die Floyd’s se kennels afgelaai het. Dit was reeds op 26 Mei. Mnr. ‘Roeloffze’ antwoord

nie sy telefoon nie. Mnr. Floyd het ook ‘Roeloffze’ se dogter gebel en daar is geen antwoord nie. Mnr. Floyd gee nou al van

Mei-maand af die honde liefde, kos en aandag maar die eienaars moet dringend

opgespoor word. Daar is deesdae ’n tendens in Lydenburg dat honde net hier afgelaai

word en die eienaars trek weg. Ons hoop dat dit nie die geval is met hierdie honde nie. Die

honde wil baie graag weet of hul eienaar ooit gaan terugkom. Die honde kan

aangeneem word, een van die drie het reeds ’n nuwe huis gekry. Hierdie is ’n baie

DO you wonder why we celebrate Woman's Day on the 9th August in South Africa? It has nothing to do with honouring women just because we need another "Mother's Day", this day commemorates the 9 August 1956 when women participating in a national march petitioned against pass laws . On this day in 1956, over 20 000 women of all races and ages from every corner of South Africa marched together towards the Union Buildings in Pretoria. These brave women were marching in protest against the pass laws that proposed even further restrictions on the movements of women. Organised by the Federation of South African Women, the March was led by four brave women; Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophie Williams and Lilian Ngoyi. The leaders delivered petitions to Prime Minister JG Strijdom's office within the Union Buildings. Women throughout South Africa had put their names to these petitions indicating their anger and frustration at having their freedom of movement restricted by the hated official passes. To conclude the Women's March the women sang freedom songs such as Nkosi sikeleli Afrika, however, the song that became the anthem of the march was: wathint' abafazi,wathint' imbokodo,uza kufa! When you strike the women,you strike a rock,you will be crushed [you will die]! The march was a resounding success and South Africa recognises the bravery of these women who risked arrest, detention and banning by declaring 9 August National Women's Day.

Michelle Boshoff six folding tables were purchased and some benches were made within the budget for the school. A plaque was donated by The Sign Shop in Lydenburg. Sizo School is situated on the grounds of Maria Trost Catholic Mission which was established on 20 March 1924. This forms part of several projects that the volunteer group has made possible. Sizo is very proud of the new building.

Verskeie gaskunstenaars het van die verhoog af gesorg vir musiek en vermaak en die bekende en gewilde Willem Montgomery was weer die seremoniemeester.Ons dank gaan aan die Wildevy Manne (en die vroue, wat dikwels die meeste werk agter die skerms doen) vir hierdie jaarlikse gebeurtenis. Die standaard en verskeidenheid van wat aangebied word, plaas die Wildevy Gesinsdag vierkantig as een van die beste 4x4 byeenkomste landwyd. Verskeie plaaslike liefdadigheidsgroepe en sentrums baat jaarliks by die winste wat genereer word. THE concept of an air-free tyre has been around for some time but has not yet seen mainstream production. This will soon change when Polaris launches its non-pneumatic tyre (NPT) for all-terrain vehicles early next year.

ASTON MARTIN and Mercedes-AMG GmbH have confirmed a partnership deal that will see the two parties co-developing a range of bespoke V8 powerplants.

Rumours of a tie-up between the Gaydon-based firm and Mercedes-AMG G m b H subsidiary have been doing the

rounds for some time, but it has now emerged that the agreement is now official.

Although the exact details of the agreement are yet to be finalised, it’s believed that the German firm will allow Aston Martin access to its resources in order to develop and produce a range of bespoke V8 powerplants.

In return, AMG will receive a 5 per cent stake in Aston Martin, joining such co-investors as Kuwaiti financial firm Adeem Investment and Italy’s Investindustrial private equity firm. A supply agreement between Mercedes-AGM GmbH, Daimler AG and Aston Martin is also believed to be part of the deal.

AM’s product development director Ian Minards declared, “We have selected AMG specifically as the basis for this powertrain development process.” Head of Mercedes-AMG GmbH Ola Källenius said “We are proud to work with Aston Martin and provide them with powertrain and e/e components for their forthcoming sports cars. This is proof of AMG’s technological and performance expertise and a real win-win situation for both sides.”

COMPUTER geeks already knew it was possible to hack into a car's computerized systems and potentially alter some electronic control functions. But new research to be presented shows the vulnerabilities are greater and the potential for mischief worse than believed, in a wake-up call for the motor industry. Chris Valasek, director of security intelligence for the security firm IOActive, and Charlie Miller, security engineer for Twitter, found these vulnerabilities in cars' on-board computers, a mandatory feature on US vehicles since 1996.

They found that by accessing this device, which sits under the steering wheel, someone with a brief period of access, like a parking attendant, could hack the car and reprogram key safety features. “We had full control of braking,” Valasek told AFP in a telephone interview. “We disengaged the brakes so if you were going slow and tried to press the brakes they wouldn't work. We could turn the

headlamps on and off, honk the horn. We had control of m a n y a s p e c t s o f t h e automobile.”

The pair, working with partial f u n d i n g f r o m t h e U S government ' s De fense A d v a n c e d R e s e a r c h Pro jec ts Agency, a lso manipulated a vehicle's steering by hijacking the “park assist” feature which was designed only to move slowly in reverse. “You would need a brief moment of physical access,” Valasek said. “You could reprogram and untether from the car and the system.” While some earlier research focused on the potential to wirelessly gain control of some functions, Valasek said his project looked at overwriting the software code in the vehicles, with even more damaging consequences. The research is to be presented at Def Con, an annual gathering of hackers and security experts in Las Vegas. The research is not the first to show the potential for hacking into car computer systems, which are becoming more ubiquitous as more vehicles add services connecting to the Internet or cellular phone networks, and some firms like Google are using self-driving automobiles.

A 2010 study by researchers from the University of Washington and University of California at San Diego demonstrated how an attacker could infiltrate virtually any electronic control unit (ECU) of a car and “leverage this ability to completely circumvent a broad array of safety-critical systems.” That study showed that the engine control devices initially designed for pollution reduction had been integrated into other aspects of a car's functioning and diagnostics.

And the US Department of Homeland Security issued an advisory in May warning of flaws in the wireless Bluetooth systems in some cars which could be exploited by an outsider to take control of some car functions. Valasek said most

cars on the road have a number of computers and “they all trust each other. As long as they are receiving information, they don't care who is sending it.” This highlights the need for more attention to cybersecurity in vehicle design, he said. “We want an intelligent discussion on this,” he said. Valasek and Miller will be releasing full technical details of their research at Def Con.

“ W e h o p e p e o p l e e n j o y t h e presentation and take our tools and data and try to reproduce them and do their own research,” he said. “Although there is research on automobile security no one is releasing the data.” Valasek said there have been no real-life exploits of automobile hacking, but added that “we just don't know what could be done with this.” He said it is more complicated than hacking into a personal computer but that his latest research shows that “with a minimal number of people you can have results where you can control the car, and do things that are detrimental to safety.” -Sapa-AFP

Can you imagine shouting out at the golf club bar: “Hi everybody, I’ve just bought a Cedric!” Still, the company had once introduced a sports car called Fair Lady. Why bother even to dream up an image for your vehicle company when you can just give it a fancy name and hope it sells?

Could this be the thinking behind other manufacturers who have played on links with the aircraft industry, for instance (real or imagined) with names such as Beaufighter, Brigand and Blenheim (all Bristols), Spitfire (Triumph) and Viggen (Saab). Rolls-Royce is a long-term adherent to ethereal themes: Silver Ghost, Silver Spirit, Silver Wraith, Silver Seraph and Phantom. Riley had a Sprite (also used by Austin-Healey), an Elf and an Imp (also used by Hillman which had previously launched the Minx), while from AMC came the Gremlin; from Gilbern the Genie; from TVR the Chimaera and Cerbera.

Lamborghini had a Silhouette and Mitsubishi a Mirage. Honda has given us the Legend, Cadillac the Eldorado. Opel had an Olympia and Leyland its Titan bus.

Success in motor racing has frequently led to commemorative names, sometimes as a special edition. Sunbeam's Alpine, Saab's Monte Carlo and Ford's Escort Mexico hinted at wins in those rallies. Marcos's LM500 had competed at Le Mans (as had Singer's Le Mans), while McLaren's F1 speaks for itself. Cars named after racing circuits would have to include Riley's Brooklands (also used by Bentley), Austin's 7 Ulster, Alfa Romeo's 155 Silverstone, Maserati's Kyalami, Sebring and Indy, Opel's Monza (also used by Chevrolet) and De Tomaso's Longchamp. Ferrari's 365GT was popularly known as the Daytona.

Winds have obvious connotations of power and speed: VW and Maserati favouring such names for their cars. Maserati had the Mistral, Ghibli, Bora and Khamsin but VW started their ball rolling in 1973 with the Passat; this name may have been chosen to indicate a wind of change, as this was the first true VW not to have been derived from the rear-engined, air-cooled Beetle. Next came the Golf, which is the Germanic equivalent of Gulf (as in the Gulf air stream); however, in English-speaking markets (except the US where the car was known as the Rabbit) the name was inevitably associated with the game of golf, to the extent that later Golfs even came equipped with a golf-ball gear-shifter knob. The pick-up version was given the tongue-in-cheek name of Caddy.

After a small hiccough with the Polo (and its sedan derivative, the Derby), VW continued on its windy theme with the Santana, Jetta, Vento, Scirocco, Corrado and, more recently, the Bora (sold as the Jetta in South Africa). Ford gave us the Zephyr, Corsair and Thunderbird and Chevrolet the Corvair, while from Oldsmobile we had the Tornado. British manufacturer Tornado gave us the Typhoon, Tempest (also used by Pontiac) and Thunderbolt, and Toyota the Blizzard, while Lister currently makes the Storm (a name previously used by VW on a version of the Scirocco and by US GM subsidiary Geo and Indian manufacturer San).

Jewel-based names are few, surprisingly. Austin had a run on them for variations on the 1920s/30s Austin 7, with Pearl, Ruby and Opal, and Ford used Sapphire for the sedan version of the Sierra. Meanwhile, Toyota gave us the Picnic and Suzuki the Cappucino, while Mazda brought out a special-edition MX5 called Merlot – a name that might well appeal to Capetonians! Swedish manufacturer Saab got all poetic with its Sonnet sports car, as did Datsun with its Stanza. Honda has displayed quite a musical bent with its Prelude, Jazz, Quintet, Ballade and Concerto, as have Hyundai (Sonata), Nissan (Figaro), Mazda (Capella) and Austin (Allegro).

Cars were often given an air of importance (sometimes laughably) by having an aristocratic name or high-ranking title assigned to them. While Daimler probably got away with its 1950’s Majestic, Austin was ridiculed for its 1982 Ambassador.

What is in a name ?Elsewhere, we had Ford's Consul, Opel's Diplomat, Senator, Commodore and Admiral, Humber's Imperial, Vauxhall's Royale, Reliant's Regal (also used by Buick), Renault's Dauphine and Mercury's Monarch and Marquis. Studebaker went a little overboard with Commander, President, Champion and even a Dictator in its 1930’s range. Nissan also had a President.

They say they don’t make them like they used to. In this case, thank goodness! DAVE FALL -

ED: I must say carmaker bosses are often bean counters who have no idea what they do. A few cases in point includes GM who calls a Holden a Chevrolet (I have one, a Holden that is, badged as Chevrolet), or a Daewoo a Chevrolet or Opel a Vauxhall. Then there was Ford / Mazda’s earlier bakkies. Depending on what sticker a stupid worker put on the steering wheel, you either bought a Mazda B-series or a Ford Courier. What about Nissan, whose cars not only look like Renaults or Dacias, but actually are.

A RELATIVELY high level of employers inspected by the Department this week, were complying with the hospitality sectoral determination, a report issued on Friday, said. This followed a rigorous process that commenced on Monday in the region, as part of national inspections in Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The inspections form part of labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant's drive to ensure protection of vulnerable workers in the country by seeing to it that employers abide by all labour laws. She appealed to such employers to address areas of non-compliance pointed out
