MTPA roofdierkenner, oud kollega en Lydenburger, Gerrie Camacho, is Saterdag deur n luiperd in die Watervalsrivierpas aangeval. Gerrie het uit sy hospitaalbed in Nelspruit gespot en ges dit is soos om

met n versapper te probeer baklei - die ding is alkante skerp!Gerrie, Amerikaanse rolprentmaker Dairen Simpson en Brendon Mandy was

besig om luiperds te vang (met die nodige permit) om halsbande op hulle te monteer. Saterdagoggend het hulle die luiperd in die spesiale strik genader, maar dit het reeds die vlekvryestaalkabel wat normaalweg in die wippe gebruik word, byna afgekou. Hulle was met die hulp van n plaaslike veearts op die punt om die dier te verdoof (om die halsband te monteer), toe dit opgespring, die kabel gebreek en op Simpson afgestorm het. Simpson het n skoot met n haelgeweer afgevuur, maar die luiperd het hom beetgekry en erg gekrap. Dit is daarna die bos in en Simpson is eers na die plaaslike hospitaal en daarna na die Nelspruit Medikliniek geneem vir behandeling.Intussen is Camacho en Mandy ook die bos in agter die luiperd aan, omdat hulle wou vasstel hoe erg die dier gekwes was. Hulle het slegs n haelgeweer by hulle gehad.Camacho het later n geweer gaan haal en op die wal van n donga, het die luiperd hulle onverwags bestorm. Die geweer het geweier en die luiperd het Gerrie aan sy linkerarm en been beet gekry. Die dier het hom rondgeruk, in sy regterarm en linkerbeen gebyt en sy gesig gekrap.Die verwoede dier het Camacho toe gelos en Mandy aangeval. Mandy het die dier met n stomp geslaan, terwyl Camacho die geweer aan die

werk gekry en op die luiperd geskiet het. Die luiperd is toe weer die wal af en die bosse in. Gerrie reken Mandy se houe met die stuk stomp, het waarskynlik sy lewe gered. Die twee, Camacho en Mandy is daarna te voet tot by n voertuig en Camacho is later ook in die Nelspruit Medikliniek opgeneem, waar hy oor die naweek en vroeg die week nog behandel is. Met ons ter perse gaan, was hy nog in die hospitaal, maar was sy toestand goed.Die luiperd is later dood in die veld aangetref. Hierdie was nie Gerrie se enigste insident met n groot kat nie. Hy is in 1988 in die laeveld deur n leeu aangeval, terwyl hy daar aan n natuurbewaringsprojek gewerk het.Andre Coetzee.

THE DA has scored a significant victory for the residents of Thaba Chweu, as both the Public Protector and the Human Rights Commission positively responded to their requests for an investigation into the Thaba Chweu Municipality.In a historic turn of events, both Chapter 9 institutions found merit in their correspondence regarding the municipality's lack of accountability and its failure to provide even the most basic services to residents, for years. The Human Rights Commission last week wrote to the Municipal Manager of the Thaba Chweu Municipality, and

A win against Thaba Chweuinformed him that certain aspects of the municipality's service delivery failures may indeed be in violation of Chapter 2 of the Constitution. To that end, the HRC gave the municipality a deadline of 12 October to respond to the DA, and the community's allegations.In her correspondence, Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela informed the DA that after a careful assessment of their complaint, the allegations made are sufficient to warrant a preliminary investigation, and that she had appointed the necessary person to do so. While residents of this beleaguered municipality are far from being out of the woods, the DA is

confident that the two investigations will add to the already mounting pressure on Cooperative Governance MEC Madala Masuku to intervene and dissolve the Council according to Section 139(1(c) of the Constitution, as requested by the community at large. MEC Masuku may stand at the podium in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and provide false comfort by saying that conditions in Thaba Chweu are improving, but the truth of the dysfunctionality of the Council and the Administration cannot be hidden from the public eye for much longer. Once again, the ANC has failed where the DA and the greater public have succeeded.

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is currently embarking on a process to biometrically register social grants beneficiaries with the aim of rooting out fraud and corruption within the system. In order to complete this process all recipients of social grants are therefore expected to report to one of the registration sites within the next six months. In doing so however, the Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, urges all parents and primary care givers in receipt of child support grants and foster child grants to ensure that their children do not absent themselves from school for re-registration purposes.In order to cater for learners SASSA has made it possible for all registration sites throughout the country to continue to function well after school hours. Through local radio advertisements, distribution of pamphlets and posters, communities will be constantly informed of the various sites and actual dates and times on which they can present themselves for the re-registration process. Maar elders gaan dit ook soos in die Wilde Weste.Hier by ons jaag n besope sot in n swart Navara bakkie

Ek en Reinet staan Vrydag vir n uur op die snelweg naby Bronkhorstspruit, nadat die Polisie in hulle wysheid in gure weer n mislukte padblokkade probeer hou. In Marikana is die mynwerkers boos en die Polisie probeer hulle vasvat.Dit ren oral in die land en die somer was kort. Ons bibber di naweek van die koue.In Potloodspruit sit die inwoners soos

gewoonlik sonder krag.Oral sit en wonder mense oor die ekonomie en die armoede. Die stakings gaan nie help nie.In ons dorp spoel die slaggate in die strate vinniger oop as wat die idiotiese munisipaliteit grond daarin kan gooi. Wat n vermorsing van geld en mannekrag! Plaas hulle die strate reg, regmaak - met teer!In my area jaag n vent met n wit 1400 Nissan bakkie op en af in Pretoriusstraat en maak n vreeslike lawaai. Ek ken minstens drie ouens in daardie omgewing wat nie daarvan hou nie en nie baie praat nie. Die risiko is dat die outjie dalk per ongeluk iewers kan seerkry.Mens moet as jy sulke dinge aanvang altyd dink aan die gevolge. Iewers word iemand kwaad en iewers verloor n ou dit dalk en voor jy jou o uitvee is dit seer. Ja boet, hierdie is n wilde plek! Oppas!

Daar is niks sommer aan die gesis van vleis oor kole nie. Dis Suid-Afrikaans en eie aan ons. Soos n braaivleis-reuk. My pa het altyd ges: Sonde aan die ou wat my nie nooi nie.

Gaan tik die woord braai in op die www.google.com bladsy. n Volle 14 700 000 resultate word gegee. Dit bevestig dit net weer aan my dat braai in almal se smaak val . Braai het ook nou al uitgekring na ander lande... nie as barbeque nie maar Engelstalige-lande wat die woord braai gebruik.

n Braaier mag glad nie alleen by die braai wees nie, onder geen omstandighede nie.

nthou ten alle tye braai is 'n eeue lange tradisie, en die hoeksteen van Afrikaner kultuur, hoe meer jy braai hoe sterker word ons kultuur. En onthou, ons is NIE Amerikaners nie, ons braai NIE viennas of hamburger patties nie. Ons mors nie met bosveld braaihout nie.

This serves as an incentive to both established and aspirant authors to go on writing. Nobody dictates to them what to write about, nor how to write. The authors themselves, individually, decide on what to write and how they write. What has happened to all the literary awards, like Ramaila Literary Award, that we had prior to the new political dispensation? Who brought them to an end? I think one of the reasons why this came to an end is that there is no tendering in it. Secondly, it is due to the fact that most politicians, who delight in self-praise, are not authors. They cannot stomach it when ordinary people receive some accolade. They will also not be happy when these authors, speak out their minds. They would prefer authors who praise the struggle heroes as if they were angels, and would equally encourage authors who denigrate the former regime leaders as if the were the devils of the pariahs. Authors, wake up and write. Write critically on any topic you think about without fear or favour. Without your contribution we are starving. Address all the evils head-on. It is your duty and responsibility to do so. To inform the masses.

Dit is baie moeilik om di vlermuise bloot op grond van hulle voorkoms te onderskei. Hulle verskil egter beduidend in DNS, sonarklanke, skedelvorm, neusblare en geslagsdele.Die navorsing het jare geduur omdat genetika langer neem om te ontleed en baie vlermuise ontleed moes word, om dit meer akkuraat te maak."Ons vernoem dit na Cohen ter erkenning van haar beduidende bydrae tot die bewaring en ontdekking van nuwe vlermuisspesies in Suid-Afr ika en veral Mpumalanga," het prof. Peter Taylor van die Universiteit van Venda ges.Taylor is n professor in genetika en het onder andere die navorsing gelei. Die drie ander spesies wat ontdek is, is Smithers se hoefystervlermuis (Rhinolophus smithersi) wat in Zimbabwe voorkom, die Mosambiekse hoefystervlermuis (R. mossambicus) en die Berg Mabu-hoefystervlermuis (R. Sy het vertel dat hulle skerp tande het en harder insekte as ander vlermuise kan vreet. "Ja, ek is deur een gebyt," het sy gelag en bygevoeg dat sy wel teen hondsdolheid ingent is. Haar spesie kom ook in die Sudwala-grotte voor. Cohen het ges dat, hoewel dit moeilik is om hulle presiese getalle te bepaal, daar net n paar honderd is. "Hulle kom voor in klein groepies van net tussen vyf en tien." Navorsers kan ook nie regtig s hoekom hulle net in Mpumalanga voorkom nie. "Dit is duidelik dat hulle van bergagtige gebiede hou, maar ons weet nie of hulle dieet ook n rol speel in hoekom hulle spesifiek hier voorkom nie."Vlermuise word onder moeilike omstandighede nagevors. Cohen moes in grotte en mynskagte rondklouter en dit is moeilik om die diertjies te hanteer. Sy doen oor die algemeen navorsing oor kleiner soogdiertjies vir die MTPA, met die doel om hulle beter te bewaar. Cohen het aan die PretoriaTechnikon (nou TUT) studeer. Hoewel sy al ander baanbreker-navorsing op haar kerfstok het, is die ontdekking van hierdie spesie beslis n hoogtepunt. "Dit is n massiewe eer en ek kan net dankie s aan die groep wetenskaplikes. THE Rabies virus is mainly transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Animals infected by the virus are characterised by behavioural changes, abnormal salivation, aggression, abnormal vocalisation, progressive paralysis and inevitably death. Rabies is fatal for man and animal, explains Dr. Marietjie Malan State Vet from the Directorate Veterinary Services. However, the disease can only be confirmed by submitting a brain sample from the infectious or suspicious animal. In South Africa not all human deaths are reported, because the disease is often associated with witchcraft. Rabies is responsible for laboratory deaths of between 10 and 40 people each year. Most victims are children under the age of 10 years, says Dr. Malan.Pet owners are compelled by law to ensure that their dogs and cats are vaccinated at three months of age against rabies. The vaccination should be repeated within 12 months and then every three years. In high risk areas animals should be vaccinated annually, advises Dr. Malan. All dog and cat bite wounds to humans should be reported at the nearest hospital and the state veterinarian should be informed, for investigation of suspect animals and their Rabies vaccination history. Thaba Chweu's Rabies Week will entail information dissemination and vaccination of pets free of charge. Dr. Malan advises owners to ensure that dogs will be on leashes and cats are manageable (orange bag or pillow case). 1. FROM CHINESE TO FRENCH - EVERYONE IN THE WORLD IS SOUTH AFRICAN: All the worlds people are twice South African because it was here that mans descendants and modern man both evolved. 2. THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF LIFE ON EARTH YES FROM SA: In eastern South Africa, scientists have found traces of blue-green algae dating back 3 500 million years. This is some of the earliest evidence of life on Earth. 3. Should an alien arrive and find that SA did not suit its disposition, it would not need a passport to leave but it would have to acquire an export permit from the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA). 5. SA HAS THE WORLD'S OLDEST REMAINS: The oldest remains of modern humans were found in Klasies River Cave in the Eastern Cape. They are well over 100 000 years old. 6. SOUTH AFRICA HAS OVER 2000 SHIPWRECKS: There are more than 2 000 shipwrecks, dating back at least 500 years, off the SA coast and more than one, including the Waratah, simply vanished without a trace. 7. TRANCE WAS HERE OVER 25 000 YEARS AGO: Trance is nothing new to South Africa. In fact, bushman cave paintings in the Drakensburg are thought to be the work of Shamans operating in a 'trance' state. THREE MILLION!: South Africa's history and pre-history goes back more than three million years. 12. KAROO BOASTS THE BEST DINOSAUR FOSSILS: The Karoo region is home to some of the best fossils of early dinosaurs. ABOUT SAHRAOn 1 April 2000, the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) replaced the National Monuments Council as the official governing body overseeing the protection of South Africa's cultural heritage. LIMPOPO drivers will have to fork out R120 to convert to new number plates from April - for the fifth time since 1994. After the change, drivers are still expected to change their number plates every five years. This was announced last week by roads and transport MEC Pitsi Moloto at a media briefing to outline the provincial governments progress in the first quarter, which began in April and ended in June. There are currently 56 800 registered cars in the province. Moloto, who also chairs the provinces economic cluster, said: The new aluminium number plates, which will also have hidden security features, will provide a uniform look and will comply with national standards. The department had planned to introduce new number plates in June 2011 but this had been delayed. Moloto also said the province would introduce a 24-hour shift system for traffic officers as from November. Traffic law enforcement is currently operating two shifts which start at 6am and end at 8pm, he said. This means that from 8pm to 6am there are no traffic law enforcement activities. - The Star / iolMotoring

THOSE of us who use the information provided by satnav companies such as Garmin and TomTom to get from A to places we've never been before tend to take the map on our satnav screen pretty much for granted. After all, the satnav contacts three or more GPS satellites, triangulates their positions (which are known) to figure out exactly where it is and the rest is just maths - right? Wrong. It's not that simple. The maths places the cursor in exactly the right place on the map - but those maps are made by people, and it's a very complex, multi-layered process. Dutch-based TomTom, for instance, starts with millions of nodes, each containing the GPS co-ordinates of a data point - which could be anything from a traffic light to a hospital to your favourite Chinese restaurant. Then a layer of lines is drawn over these, representing the roads, rivers, railways and other geographical features. Next, each individual feature is assigned a file of information such as road names and route numbers - but also including the speed limit, vehicle restriction such as weight limits, and specific conditions such as 'No Overtaking' or 'No Right Turn'. On top of that goes a point of interest or services layer containing schools, hospitals, garages, police stations and even restaurants and museums. And finally, the top layer has details of 'real measured road speeds' provided by IQ routes and HD Live Traffic services; that's more like a desktop, in computer terms rather than a memory file, because it's constantly being updated in real time. But where does all that information come from? The basic physical data cones from satellite images and aerial photography imagery; some of the detail comes from local authorities but for most of the road signs, features and points of interest somebody has to physically go there and collect the data. The mapping vans are fitted with cameras, gyroscopes, redundant computer systems and very accurate differential GPS - all of which record their information on a redundant hard disk. The vans also have wheel sensors to record the distance travelled while the gyroscopes record changes in direction - which really helps in places where GPS doesn't work, such as underground roads, tunnels and multi-storey car parks. Back at the map centre, all this information is fed into a programme called Cartopia, that gives the editor an overall life-like view of the surroundings. The cameras capture images every eight metres on city streets and every 10 metres on highways with a 360 view of all road signs and roadside features. The images are only used in-house so no privacy issues are involved. Six photos are taken every eight metres which amounts to 750 photos per kilometre. Image recognition software detects details such as road signs and speed limits, which are then automatically applied to the database. Community feedback from TomTom customers via MapShare also provides input on changes in the real world which is checked against reference source material. And that's what you see when you switch on your satnav, either hand-held or in your car. ACCORDING to a study by BP Ultimate, South Africas cars could be among the cleanest and best-kept in the world, with 96% of SA drivers saying they take great pride in the appearance of their cars.The survey, which drew almost a thousand responses from male and female drivers across SA, showed that eight in ten respondents said they clean their cars at least once a week. A grubby 2% confessed to cleaning their cars just once a year. This translates to 164 000 grimy vehicles among the 8.2 million cars on our roads. A similar study in the USA, found that 16% of drivers never wash their cars, equating to a staggering 73 million dirty cars among the 138 million registered vehicles in the US.The poll revealed that Northern Cape drivers have the cleanest cars, with nine in ten drivers washing their cars at least once a week compared to only six out of every ten car owners in the Western Cape who wash their cars weekly.

Horskool Lydenburg skryf: 2011 se Top 5 akademiese leerders van Gr. 8 tot 11 van 2011 het vanaf 13 tot 17 Augustus 'n onvergeetlike toer na Zinkwazi strand aan die Natalse Noordkus gehad. Elkeen van hierdie top akademiese leerders se harde werk in 2011 is raakgesien. Daarom s Horskool Lydenburg dan ook dankie aan hulle.Die 20 leerders het in twee pragtige huise reg op die strand gewoon. Elkeen van die groepe het hul eie sakgeld gekry en het selfstandig opgetree. Die etes wat hulle voorberei het, was ook n uitstekende aanduiding van hulle wye verskeidenheid talente. Die groep leerders het geswem, gesonbrand, branderplank gery, inkopies gedoen, gefliek en 'n heerlike besoek aan Ushaka Marine World geniet. Die res van die vakansie het die leerders mekaar se geselskap terde geniet.Baie dankie aan elkeen van hierdie pragtige leerders. Lydenburg Horskool is voorwaar 'n gelukkige skool om di wonderlike, talentvolle kinders te h. Baie geluk aan die ouers, julle het spoggerige kinders. In terms of Chapter 7 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations No. R 543 of 2010, an appeal against this authorization may be directed to the MEC of the Department of Economic Development Environment and Tourism, Ms P Kekana, Private Bag X9484, Polokwane, 0700 or 3rd Floor, Evridiki Towers, 20 Hans van Rensburg Street, Polokwane, 0699 or by fax 015 293 8317 within 20(twenty) calendar working days from the date in which the Environmental Authorization was issued. Hengelklub maak lyne nat

Die Graad 6 groep van Steelpoort Akademie het die Veldskool by Eagle Adventures buite Nelspruit bygewoon en n bietjie meer oor hulself, hul maats en leierskap geleer. Dit was groot pret, nie net vir die kinders nie, maar ook vir die onderwysers. Nuwe vaardighede is aangeleer soos bylgooi en kanoroei. Van die ander aktiwiteite was balanseer gevegte in die swembad,

paintball, pyl en boog skiet en vele meer. Dankie aan juffrou Sterretjie en juffrou Anet wat hulle vergesel het.

Steelpoort Akademie het ook Kansadag gehou ter ondersteuning van kanker. Almal het gedeel in die welwillendheid, van die hoof tot die opsigter wat defnitief die prys vir die dag gewen het.

Steelpoort Akademie het die voorreg gehad om vir Hykie Berg by hulle skool te ontvang. Hy het die leerders en onderwysers toegespreek. Hy het n baie opbouende boodskap aan die kinders gebring, dat elkeen belangrik is en dat alle drome bewaarheid

kan word deur harde werk! Dankie aan al die borge wat dit vir hulle moontlik gemaak het om Hykie by ons skool te kon verwelkom.

die dag.Die dag het op 1 September by die Lydenburg Gholfklub plaasgvind met baie goeie gholf en 'n feestelike atmosfeer. Die prysuitdeling het begin met die bekende boetebottel. Die boetes was vir vensters wat raak geslaan is, tot humoristiese grappies .Die prys vir die meeste houe van die dag is deur Alwyn Botha en sy vennoot van St Pie gewen. Hopelik sal die skaatsplanke handig te pas kom met al die aflewerings. Die eersteplek wenners was Ruben en Pans Archer, en die 2de plek is deur Coenie du Preez en Niel Engelbreght gewen.Die fondse wat ingesamel is sal vir die aankoop van 'n kragopwekker vir die adminstratiewe gebou en rekenaarsentrums aangewend word.
