Speak Up Year 7!
‘Do pop stars make good role models?’, ‘What advice would you give to our new
Headteacher’ and ‘Should schools be single or mixed sex?’ were just some of the hot topics
under discussion at the Year 7 Public Speaking Competition.
Three teams battle out against each other in categories of Best Chair, Best Impromptu
Speech and Best Scripted Speech to be crowned ultimate winners. The impromptu speech
section was particularly unnerving for the students, with only minutes of preparation time;
they were provided with a topic heading which then had to be turned quickly into a speech
in front of their expectant crowd, 250 Year 7 students!

Mrs Jones, Assistant Head, took on the role of judge and commented on the high level of competition. ‘It was a tough call’ she said. ‘The standard was extremely high with students speaking clearly, with humour, sometimes in different languages and to an audience who listened intently throughout the whole competition.’
I Band: 7LAM Eliot Thompson, Camille Ribeiro and Emily Field
G Band: 7SL Ellen Williams, Olly Carter and Charlotte Saville
Individual winners were:
Best Chair, Camille Ribeiro
Best Scripted Speech, Robbie Matthews
Eleanor Dear, Best Impromptu Speech

Year 6 Discovery Week 2 With final visits from Burley Woodhead, Ashlands, Ben Rhydding and All Saints, our Year 6 Discovery weeks draw to a close. They have been the most successful to date, running CAT tests alongside ‘getting to know’ activities within a 2 week period—all organised by Chris Washington. We look forward to welcoming all our new students and their parents in September.

Congratulations to our U13 rounders team who were in action against Oakbank on Monday. They played fantastically well. As they prepared themselves for their last match in the Bradford League, they knew what they needed to do in order to qualify for the League Finals and a lunchtime session alongside a change of tactics gave them a strong determination to carry out the plan. They all rose to the challenge superbly!
They needed lots of rounders; they batted strongly and took their chances well - it paid off securing 10.5 rounders. They needed to stop the other team scoring as many rounders; 1st ball - caught out, 3rd ball - stumped out, 6th ball - caught out, and so it continued!
The tactics worked, the team were focused, with catches galore, they provided an emphatic display of fielding skills and finished the game with their opponents all out with only a half rounder scored. Job done!
We just need to hope our rounder difference overall is now good enough to get us through...whatever happens, the team cannot be faulted for enthusiasm, commitment and skill.
Well done to the Squad: Sophie Armitage (8ADM) (Capt.), Kirsty McMillan (JRW) (Vice Capt.), Ellie Cooper (8ALC), Bea Waller (8JRW), Nisha Cant (8HM), Izzy Atkinson (8HM), Niamh Hyslop (8ADM), Caitlin Rhodes (8GPS), Izzy Weir (8HM) and Becky Hadfield (8ADM)
Well done to our U15B and U13 girls’ tennis team who played Woodhouse Grove on Tuesday. The scores don’t reflect just how close the matches were! The scores, before the weather interrupted the matches, were: U15B AEGON match - lost 1-5 U13 (friendly match) - winning 2-1 but rain stopped play!

Pastor Ivan Lugolobi We welcomed Pastor Ivan again into to school this week; he joined a Year 8 assembly and enjoyed 7MPC’s Citizenship lesson with Mr Stonehouse. Ilkley Grammar School has a growing association with The Revival Centre, Matugga, Uganda, a school and orphanage north of Kampala ran by Pastor Ivan who has visited us most years in the last ten or so; a number of our students have also gone out to Matugga to support their work on the ground. The secondary school and vocational skills centre at Revival aim to give all students a package of academic qualifications and skills that will enable them to get a good job to support themselves and their families or (given financial support) to move into higher education. Visit www.revivalcentrematugga.org.uk for more information about the Revival Centre and what Pastor
Ivan does.
Community Sports Day—Wednesday 9th July Click here to view the booklet detailing all the choices available for studens on their Community Sports Day. Students will need to choose their school-based activities in the coming days and select 3 activities they would like to do this Community Sports Day. This could be something they love already or something that they’ve always wanted to try, or could be something they’ve never heard of before and in the full spirit of what are Communities are all about, are willing to give it a go for their Community! Further information about how you sign up for activities will be sent to students shortly and the advice is to get their choices in straightaway to avoid disappointment!

Swimming Gala The first Wharfedale Schools’ Swimming Gala is fast approaching. Taking place on Tuesday 17th June at Ilkley Swimming Pool, the event will see our students compete against swimmers from Prince Henry's and St Mary's. The gala will run from 4pm-6pm and spectators are extremely welcome. It will be an extremely exciting event and a great opportunity to celebrate all the swimming talent we have at the school. Refreshments will be on sale at the venue.
Could you be a Community Governor? We have two Community Governor vacancies and we are looking for, in particular, someone who has data analysis skills or change/people management experience. If you know of anyone who would be interested in becoming a Community Governor, please e-mail [email protected]

Students were challenged to build a warning beacon conveying information useful to cyclists about the road or weather conditions ahead. They were asked to design and build a circuit from electronic components which had to be paid for out of a fixed budget. Several completely new skills had to be mastered quickly, as well as the traditional ones of teamwork, time keeping and detailed planning. The circuit was to be housed inside a plastic casing of the team’s own design. For many of us, students and teachers alike, the most exciting moment was when these structures began to appear on the 3D printers – this was the first time any of us had ever seen them working in ‘real life’.
The final product was presented to the expert audience (and the rest of us!) in a sales pitch. Despite the genuine toughness of the challenge all the teams managed to complete the task, but our White Team above were chosen as the winners because
of their intricate and imaginative solution and they have received as prizes, vouchers for a 1 hour taster session, including bike and helmet hire, at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.
Well done and thank you to all twelve of the students for their ingenuity, patience, enthusiasm and creativity and, it goes almost without saying, for their impeccable manners and exemplary behaviour. Few would disagree that our country is going to need lots of people with skills in Science, Design and Technology in the coming decades. The teams all confirmed that their existing interest in Engineering as a career had been increased further by this experience.

PTA UPDATEPTA UPDATEPTA UPDATE
Our fundraising focus is firmly on the last two PTA Events of the year, the two Car Boot Sales on June 22nd and July 20th. As always we appreciate any help you can offer. The time slot for help on Saturday 21st
June has changed from 1.30pm to 4.30-6pm. Help is also required on the Sunday. The PTA can only hold these kind of events with your help in setting up, marking out and helping to clear away, so please, put your hand up volunteer and let’s get raising some money! If you can give an hour or two of your time for one of the remaining Car Boots (June 22nd and July 20th), either on a Saturday or Sunday – please email the PTA on [email protected]. The final PTA meeting was held on Wednesday 11th June and while the PTA are pulling together the numbers for the amount of money they have raised this year, it is a timely reminder of all the hard work and dedication that goes into life as a PTA member. Not only do they give up their time for meetings, they also put in a huge amount of effort behind the scenes organising their events. They are a very important part of the school and many of the items we see as essential (mini buses) could not have been bought in previous years without their fund raising. This year’s project has been driven by the School Council—building a further lunchtime space. September will reveal all! Thank you! If you would like to be involved in the PTA then please get in touch with them and put your name down!

Shake to undo Made a mistake when typing and wish there was a handy undo button just like on your desktop word processor. Actually there is, but you have to get physical. Simply pick up your iPad, hold it tightly and give it a rigorous shake. A box will flash up on the screen asking if you would like to undo the typing you have just inputted.
Find my iPad If you regularly put your device down and then can’t find it this is for you! Turn it on in the iCloud settings and next time your iPad vanishes from the face of the Earth, log in to the iCloud on your nearest computer or phone with your iTunes details. You can then ask your iPad to display a message telling any potential finder how to return it to you. You can ask the iPad to play a sound that overrides any volume and mute settings. Have you found it yet? There it is, buried under that stack of newspapers.
Short cuts
Another option in the keyboard settings. Programme your own abbreviations that the iPad will automatically turn into real words as you type. "BW" can become "Best Wishes" and "omw" will become "On my way". Perfect for anyone battling against the spread of text speak. Just be careful which short cut keys you choose. It can be very embarrassing to hit the wrong key when typing "my" and end up sending a message with the words "miss you" in it.
Quick numbers Need to type a number in a line of text? Just touch the numbers button on the keyboard, drag it over to the number you want and let go. You'll then be taken straight back to the normal letters on the keyboard, saving you having to press three separate keys just to type a number one.
All IGS iPads should have the
name and tutor group of the
student owner as part of their
lock screen image.
This helps when reuniting
owners and iPads in cases of
forgetfulness!
Secret Keyboard Keys With a virtual keyboard, each key may be more than it first appears. Simply press and hold certain keys on each keyboard and additional keys will appear. Press and hold any letter of the alphabet to reveal other languages variations of the same letter. This works with alternate punctuation as well. Press and hold the dash key to reveal the bullet and long dash keys.
In the time precious world we live in today we are all looking for quicker ways to do things...some of these tips might help!
