Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 23, 2015As for me and my household,

we will serve the LORD.— Joshua 24:15b

KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTSIn the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband,

Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still?

We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful?

Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What will we do?

Question of the WeekThis week, what concrete action on my part will show unequivocally that I have decided to stay with Christ in eucharistic discipleship?

BLESSEDIf you have sight, you are blessed. If you have

insight, you are a thousand times blessed.

THE WAYIt’s hard to train a child in a way the parents

don’t go themselves.

Pastor’s Note21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

August 23, 2015 Year B

This is the concluding words of the 6th Chapter of John on the discourse of the Body and Blood or we call the “Eucharist”. We can recap the whole chapter when Jesus began his mission with his chosen few, healing the sick driving out demons, curing all kinds of diseases. It ended in people looking for him because he fed them from the multiplication of bread and fish. Jesus did not stop there. He continued to bring the minds of the people to himself as the bread of life, and his blood as real drink and that anyone who eats his body and drinks his blood will have life in him, a life with God because it is only our souls that makes us in the image of God. This made so much difficulty for people to understand what he meant. Some walked away, never returned. Some with enormous doubts about what he said, and even some questioned his identity. These confusions did not bother what Jesus want them to understand and explained himself. He let them go, and turning to his disciples, asked them: “Do you also want to leave? Peter, who often puts his foot in his mouth, came across this time with the right answer: “To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Many times it’s the only answer we can give to events in our lives. God’s ways are often hidden from us. God tells us he loves us, he will always be with us, but we don’t always experience that love or his presence. He tells us to love our enemies. To forgive those who have hurt us. To eat his body and drink his blood. Our faith challenges us to believe in what we cannot see or prove or perhaps not always feel or makes sense. In moments like these, we must pray. But many times the only thing we can say is: “I believe, if Jesus said it, because he speaks the words

of eternal life.” That is what faith is, pure and simple.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONThe ministry of permanent deacons has become

an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost.

The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint.

Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long-delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve.

Volunteer St. Patrick’s Parish is in need of a Volunteer to coordinate Pro-Life Activities in the Parish. Past activities have included the West Coast Walk for Life, the Right to Life Fair Booth and participation in the 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil and the educational Pro-Life presentation in the Church Vestibule for the month of October. There is a meeting once a year at the Diocesan Office in Stockton with the Director Kim Fuentes.

Contact Parish Office if you can Volunteer.

An Autumn Message About Child Protection

Autumn means back to school for children and back to work for those who have been on vacation. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this season, let us all keep sight of the importance of keeping our children and young people safe from danger. Training requirements to safeguard children have been established in parishes throughout the Diocese of Stockton. These training requirements help ensure that all children and youth experience a safe environment in all parish activities and events. The Diocese of Stockton mandates that all people who work with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo child abuse prevention training through the guidelines established by the United

States Conference of Catholic Bishops. This training includes being fingerprinted, background checked and completing an on-line training course entitled Shield the Vulnerable. If you are planning on helping or assisting in your child’s school, you are required to complete this training. For training information, contact your local parish/school Safe Environment Coordinator. For particular help and questions you may call: Linda Dillen, Manager of Benefits & Safe Environment for the Diocese of Stockton, at (209) 466-0636.
