FROM THE PASTOR

1. A COMMON WORRY ABOUT THE CHURCH IN OUR TIMES: IS IT GOING TO GO OUT OF BUSINESS, WHAT WITH

THE SHORTAGE OF PRIESTS ON THE ONE HAND, AND THE GROWTH OF INACTIVE CATHOLICS ON THE OTHER?

The short answer is NO! Christ said, “I will be with you always,

un"l the end of the world.” Over the years, many people have

predicted when the ‘end is coming’ but so far no one has been

correct. That decision is not ours to make. Meanwhile the Lord

has counseled us to be always ready.

What era of Church history is considered more worrisome than

the present? Among many experts, the usual pick starts with the

Crucifixion 33 A.D. and lasts un"l the Church is finally freed of

persecu"on with the conversion of Constan"ne in 324 A.D. About

five steps tell the story.

Persecu"on by the Roman Empire led to a choice: The Church

had to go ‘UNDERGROUND’ or face martyrdom in the Colosseum.

Therefore, Mass was celebrated in the catacombs for secrecy. The

Roman Empire ins"tuted the persecu"on to prevent this new

Chris"an religion from becoming a source of religious division.

Their fear was that it might weaken the Empire. The fear was

heightened when Tacitus, a respected writer, made a report

about the new religion; These Chris"ans follow a man named

Christ; they believe him to be divine because he supposedly came

back to life a#er being put to death on a Cross. AND THEY

WOULD RATHER DIE THAN TO DENY IT! Certainly the believers

must have had to live fear.

St. Paul emerges: At age 36, his name was Saul, and he was

both a well-educated Pharisee and a inveterate enemy of the

church. He was an ac"ve par"cipant in the martyrdom of St. Ste-

phen. On his way to Damascus in search of more Chris"ans, God

intervened; his well-known conversion followed. A#er some years

in prayer and medita"on, at age 45, he emerged as the Apostle to

the Gen"les. So now, two more worries present themselves: a) Is

Paul to be trusted or is he a spy? b) The Chosen people are Jewish,

but Paul claims that the Church must now include Gen"les as well.

St. Peter was the first Pope and clearly established himself as

the Pope in Jerusalem. At the Council of Jerusalem, he presided

and led the discussion which made possible the preaching to Gen-

"les, thus permi$ng the Church to become universal. He went to

Rome, thus replacing Jerusalem as the center of the Church. Be-

fore he could really get established there, he was put to death in

64 A.D. by order of the Emperor Nero. His death le# a big leader-

ship-vacuum in the infant church, just when the opposite was

needed the most.

In the year 70 A.D. the Roman Emperor got "red of Israel and

its never-ending resistance in paying the taxes, and therefore had

the city of Jerusalem burned to the ground. A#er that tragedy and

the dispersal of its people, any hope for the Chosen People be-

coming Chris"an disappeared, which was another serious blow to

the young church.

Controversies: In the years between 80 A.D. and 150, the

church was trying to put together a Creed and use it to pass on the

Faith. Two groups were involved: One group is called “The Apos-

tolic Fathers”. They wrote many ar"cles, like “The Didache” (85

A.D.), “The Trinity”, “Christ”. The other group contradicted the

Apostolic Fathers and usually ended up as here"cs. Perhaps the

best known heresies of this group are known as Gnos"cism and

Doce"sm. The formal study of these controversies is known as

‘Patrology”. Again, along with the other difficul"es cited above,

people were saying “How can the Church ever survive?” In the

end, with the most unexpected thing happened, the Roman Em-

peror Constan"ne was received into the Church and set it free.

The Council of Nicaea quickly followed and to this day we recite its

Creed at Sunday Mass. So the Virtue of Hope is in order today!

2. UNCONNECTED ITEMS:

As of the "me of this wri"ng, Fr. Francis will have arrived back

from his vaca"on, and ready for ac"on. So, we welcome him and

wish him the best in our St. Rose of Lima Parish.

Lent starts on Wednesday, with the ashes. May it be a holy season

and bring the happiness of Easter!

Why did the queen go to the Den"st? To get crowns on her teeth.

Why did Sally’s computer keep sneezing? It had a virus.

Why do baseball pitchers stay away from caves? They don’t like

bats.

What did one wall say to the other? Let’s meet at the corner.

LENT 2017 AT ST. ROSE OF LIMA The season of Lent is a special time for us - through more intense prayer, fasting and almsgiving - to unite ourselves more closely to Christ by renewing the commitment we made to him and to the Church at our baptism: to continually turn away from an old way of life, a life of sin and death, toward a new way of life, a life in Christ.
