Tiaan Esterhuizen, AfriForum se organiseerder in Limpopo. Adam’s Apple boasts 12 new roomsAdam’s Apple Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in the Soutpansberg area, recently completed the fi rst phase of a renovation programme.

The hotel now boasts 12 new luxury rooms, expanding the grand total of rooms to 28. Still to come this year are three more building phases that will include four new executive rooms. The hotel hopes to start breaking ground on the second phase by the start of 2013.

The facilities in the new rooms, all beautifully decorat-

ed, include en-suite showers, air conditioning, Internet ac-cess, telephone and television, as well as tea and coffee. As always, room service is also available.

After booking in, guests can enjoy exquisite Portuguese cuisine at the Cellars Restau-rant, which also specialises in Mozambique prawns, peri-peri chicken and steaks. For the more conservative guests, the hotel has a variety of tra-ditional South African dishes on the menu. Set menus can

be arranged for larger groups, and a walk-in wine cellar is available.

Fully air-conditioned con-ferencing facilities are avail-able to accommodate groups of up to 300 people (classroom style) and 160 people (banquet-ing style).

Adam’s Apple is located 14km outside of Makhado on the N1-south.

To make reservations, the hotel management and staff can be contacted at Tel 015 516 4817/3304.

The owner of LCV Promotions and Funky Bush Clothing, Lucas Vermeulen, recently decided to consolidate the two businesses under one roof.

The result is that customers can now get the same quality products, and even more, at the premises of LCV Promotions in Rissik Street in the Sakkie Strij-dom Building in Makhado.

Not only can one purchase good-quality clothing, manu-factured on the spot, from the Funky Bush range, but a new range of locally made overalls is also on offer. According to Lucas, he realised that all

overalls sold locally had to be “imported” from other regions, thereby increasing the cost. Apart from fi lling this gap, he also saw an opportunity to create some jobs for local people. The result is a competitively priced two-piece overall, with sizes ranging from 34 to 54, but the standard design can be adapted to include other sizes as well. An additional advantage is that clients can “mix and match” the sizes according to their prefer-ence. Colours include black, grey, red, blue, orange, khaki and two shades of green.

The other exciting develop-

ment at LCV enterprises is the new laminating machine, which can provide a protective layer of plastic coating for paper, vinyl banners and stickers. The result is a quality product that lasts for many years, in either a smooth or a textured fi nish. Anything from size A4 to 1,2 metres can be laminated, as long it can go through the machine.

For more information, Lucas or Rina Vermeulen can be con-tacted at 015 516 5666/1870. The fax number is 0866214488 and the email address is [email protected] or [email protected].

Court orders release of rhino suspectsThe High Court ordered the release of three suspected rhino poachers on bail this week.

The court order was enforced in the Louis Tri-chardt Regional Court on Tuesday.

The three men, Januarie Machava (37), Juda Nyembe (38) and Matthew Pedro Ngwenya (42), accused of poaching rhinos in the Alldays area, lodged an appeal to the North Gauteng High Court to be released after they were initially denied bail earlier this year. All three were charged with single counts of attempted murder and the carrying out of a restricted activity on a protected species without

the necessary permit.According to information available, the three

were arrested during a police trap in October last year in the Alldays area. This after the three had allegedly killed two rhinos and attempted to kill a third on a private game ranch in the area. They were arrested when they allegedly started shooting at police members who formed part of the trap.

The three men’s bail application was denied in March, due to the fact that Machava and Ngwenya are Mozambicans and pose a possible fl ight risk. Nyembe is a South African, but has previous con-victions and pending criminal cases against him.

During this bail application, the men claimed that it was their fi rst time in the Alldays area and that they had merely wanted to buy vegetables, and specifi cally watermelons, to re-sell at their respec-tive businesses in Gauteng. They further claimed that they had been strong-armed into admitting that they had been poaching in the area.

On Tuesday, bail was set at R5 000 for each of the men. The conditions of their bail, among others, stipulated that they could only be released from prison if they also handed in their passports and travelling documents. They are also to report to their nearest police station twice a day on Mondays and Thursdays.

Machava, Nyembe and Ngwenya are expected back in court on 30 and 31 July, when their trial starts. They will appear with two other accused, Thomas Sibanda (33) and Humbulani Reason Matutu (29), who were arrested at a later stage and had already been released on bail.

At the time of going to press, the men had their bail money ready, but were still making arrange-ments to hand in their passports.

In the meantime, Makhado businessman Yahya Shoeb Jiwa (45) will appear in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday, 16 July. The case against him follows an incident where he allegedly approached a SANParks ranger to buy a rhino horn and was subsequently arrested in a police trap in February last year. He was released on R80 000 bail during a previous court appearance.

Businessman Yahya Shoeb Jiwa is due to appear in court again on Monday, 16 July.

In the dock during a previous court appearance are, from left to right, Machava Januarie, Juda Mphyi Nyembe and Mathews Pedro Ngwenya. The High Court ordered their release this week.

Residents of Makhado awoke on Sunday to the smell of suffocating smoke emanating from the municipal dump-ing site along the Vondeling road.

For the greater part of the day, the town was engulfed in a thick cloud of smoke, with resi-dents wondering why on earth anyone would set the dumping site alight.

As to the cause of the fire, this remains a mystery.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi later stated that they still did not know who or what had started the fire and that they had reported the mat-ter to the police. He said that upon being alerted about the fire, the help of the fire brigade was called in. They eventually

managed to douse the fire by covering it with soil.

Many believe, however, that they know who had caused the fire, blaming the large number of scavengers living at the dumping site. In December last year, the Makhado Municipality confirmed that scavengers are indeed living on the municipal dumping site, which is in con-travention of the municipality’s permit conditions to manage the site. At that stage, Mr Elias Mugari announced that, with most of the scavengers being from Zimbabwe, the SAPS and Home Affairs had been asked to assist in this regard.

Asked whether the municipal-ity has since managed to remove the scavengers, Bobodi said no. “You go there and remove them,

but they just regroup and come back the next day. When the po-lice arrive, they also go and hide in the bushes,” Bobodi said.

The local office of the Demo-cratic Alliance (DA) reacted strongly with regard to Sun-day’s fire.

“The refuse dump has long been a critical issue … It has become an ‘informal settle-ment’ of sorts for illegal im-migrants who scavenge through the refuse as a livelihood or a means of sustenance.

“The DA has brought the issue to the attention of the relevant authorities on several occasions, especially since the squatters pose a serious threat to the security of our residents, but to no avail,” said Ms Zaheera Jooma in a press release.

“We will continue to oppose CoAL”The Makhado Action Group (MaKAG) has also added its voice to the growing number of voices opposing Australian mining company Coal of Af-rica Limited’s (CoAL) planned mining activities in the Sout-pansberg Valley.

MaKAG said in a statement last Tuesday that they will con-tinue to oppose the approval of any mining rights for CoAL’s Makhado project, even if they have to approach a court of law. “This position is subject to CoAL’s revising its applica-tions, so that they comply with prevailing legislation and the values subscribed to by us,” said MaKAG.

MaKAG issued this statement after they learned about CoAL’s recent plans for the Greater Sout-pansberg Project in an informa-tion document that announced the project in May this year. CoAL is currently in the process of ap-plying for the amendment of six prospecting rights.

MaKAG also expressed con-cern because the information document was not preceded by any public-participation proc-esses. “Various interested and affected parties have been alerted to the availability of this docu-ment; however, it has not yet been secured and studied,” says MaKAG in its statement.

The group is firm in its sup-port of mining, provided that it “forms an important component of the country’s economy” and

must be “socially, economically and environmentally sustainable and comply fully with the very extensive suite of legislation.”

“It is our opinion that CoAL’s Makhado application does not coincide with [these] objectives,” said the group. It further points out that the whole area in which CoAL’s proposed mines will fall has been classified by the Lim-popo Government’s Department of Economic Development, Envi-ronment and Tourism (LEDET) as “irreplaceable, unique in habitat and of high conservation priority”.

Additionally, it is also worried about the fact that CoAL has failed to secure an adequate and credible water supply to conduct the proposed mining operation. It has little faith in CoAL’s strategy to secure water allocations from commercial farms on the Nzhele-le Dam’s water scheme.

“According to information supplied to us by the Depart-ment of Water Affairs, there is no unallocated water in the area … which could be put to use by CoAL in support of the Makhado mine’s water requirements,” says MaKAG.

In response, CoAL has said that they have already placed significant resources and invest-ment into studying the various options for bulk water through highly credible consultants. “The preferred bulk water supply op-tion is water supplied from the Nzhelele Dam. The current op-

tions being considered to obtain water from this dam include buy-ing irrigation rights from farmers, contributing capital expenditure to raise the Nzhelele dam wall and increase the yield thereof for a partial allocation with Coal, and improving the efficiency of the Nzhelele water scheme through canal repairs,” says CoAL’s statement.

CoAL further alleges that MaKAG chairperson Mr Francis Nicholson was informed about all the documents, proposed projects and public participation processes in a timely manner. They further deny LEDET’s classification of the Limpopo Valley, stating that these were preliminary conservation plans that have not yet been published or approved.

“We recognise that the pro-posed mining area falls within the Vhembe Biosphere which was declared by UNESCO … [and] are fully committed to comply-ing with the extensive suite of legislation that governs [mining] activities in South Africa.”

In the meantime, the public still have time until 24 July to voice their opinions and concerns about the environmental plan of the Soutpansberg Project.

Naledi Development, CoAL’s independent consultants conduct-ing all the public-participation processes, can be contacted for more information.

Their contact number is Tel 012 543 9093.

Sy was baie min in ‘n hospitaal. Tannie Anna was klokslag een maal per week by Gister-se-Jeug.

6 13 July 2012 ZOUTPANSBERGER

By Peter Muthambi

Members of the Food and Allied Workers Un-ion (FAWU) at Entabeni (Timbadola) outside Makhado blocked farm roads in protest over wages the past week. The workers demand a 15% wage increases, although the employer only offers 8%.

More than 800 workers protested outside Enta-beni’s main offices on Monday. They also demand the extension of the bargaining unit.

“The workers demand a 15% across-the-board wage increase and this should apply to all office ad-ministration staff, who currently fall outside of the bargaining unit. The union therefore demands that the current bargaining unit be extended to accom-modate all these administration or non-production employees within certain bands of the company,” said the chairperson of FAWU, Mr Eric Chauke.

Chauke said that the union was concerned about the fact that more than 600 employees had been working for more than 10 years on a contract basis.

“The workers do not even have uniforms or protec-tive clothing. They must also be granted sick leave when they are not feeling well,” he said.

Other temporary workers who spoke to the Zoutpansberger said that they needed their salary of R56 per day to increase to R96 per day.

The manager of Entabeni, a company run by Komatiland Forests, Mr Hans Jenners, referred news enquiries to the national spokesperson, Mr Lesley Mudimeli. Mudimeli confirmed that they had received notice on 28 June of FAWU’s inten-tion to embark on an industrial strike on 2 July at all Komatiland Forests operations.

“Several meetings were held between manage-ment and union representatives to resolve the dispute regarding the annual wage increases. The negotiations came to a deadlock, with the com-pany offering up to an 8% increase in salaries and allowances, whereas FAWU was demanding an increase of 15%.

“Other non-substantive demands by the union include the following: the inclusion of adminis-tration personnel in the bargaining unit, standby, sleep-out and acting allowances to be increased by the agreed-upon percentage, and the night shift allowance should be equal to all sleep-out allow-ances,” he said.

Mudimeli added that with regard to the inclu-sion of administrative workers into the bargaining unit, the organisation had approved the terms, on condition that the agreements be amended to reflect conditions of employment.

“This will be implemented in the next financial year,” he said. He added that Komatiland Forests respected the decision of FAWU to exercise their rights in terms of the labour relations act, following their receipt of a certificate of dispute unresolved, as issued by the commissioner of the CCMA.

However, Mudimeli sited the fact that incidents of violence and intimidation of non-striking em-ployees, stakeholders and customers, or any dam-age to company property during the strike action, would not be tolerated.

“These infringements will be dealt with in terms of the applicable legislation,” he said.

At the time of going to press, the strike was still continuing.

Members of the Food and Allied Workers Union at Entabeni (Timbadola) outside Makhado embarked on a strike over the past week, following a wage dispute.

Municipality silent on dodgy RDP dealThe RDP stand in Musina/Nancefield Ex-tension 8, officially allocated to him by the provincial department of local government and housing (DLGH), boasts quite a sizeable modern house, but Mavungu Patrick Ngale and his family are still homeless.

His name had been on the waiting list since 1994. He received the stand number and alloca-tion notice from the department some four years ago, but, even though he went to the municipality to sign for the material for his RDP house, his house was never built.

In its place, a small mansion was erected, but not for him and his family…

We visited him on an empty space next to the fence of the Musina municipal refuse dump, where, he said, he was told by a municipal rep-resentative that he would be allowed to erect a shack for him and his family. In the meantime, they are lodging with a Good Samaritan nearby, who took pity on the deprived family.

How did all this happen? How did he lose the house for which he had waited and prayed for so many years and which had in fact already been of-ficially allocated to him? Who did this to him and his family? These questions were put in writing to the Musina Municipality’s spokesperson, but weeks later and after several reminders, there is still complete silence from the municipality.

An effort to obtain information about the stand telephonically from an official at the DLGH caused an almost hysterical denial of any knowledge of the case, before the call was unceremoniously ended.

The saga of the specific stand in Musina/Nance-field Extension 8 started when the recipient of the stand, an elderly Mavungu Patrick Ngale, who had never had the opportunity to attend school, was summonsed to the Musina municipal offices to “sign for the material” for his RDP house. He said he was given a form to sign. Being unable to read, he trustingly “signed for the material.”

After that, there was no further communication from the municipality. He said when, after a long silence, he had gone to investigate the progress with the erection of his RDP house, he found that there was no RDP house but a larger dwelling, owned by a complete stranger, who claimed that he had bought the stand from Ngale.

“I did not know the man. I had never seen him before in my life. I had never had any contact or dealings with this stranger,” said Ngale.

He discussed his devastating crisis with peo-ple from the residents representative committee (RRC) in Nancefield. A spokesperson for the committee, chairperson Mashudu Ndou, con-firmed that the new owner of the stand alleged that he had bought the stand from Ngale.

“A visit to the DLGH in Polokwane and en-quiries at the deeds office revealed the shocking

truth: The stand was not bought. The new owner had received it by ‘donation’. The forms Ngale signed ‘for the material’ were in fact documen-tation in which the stand was ‘donated’ to a complete stranger,” says Ndou.

“A stranger to Ngale, but not a stranger at all to a certain councillor in the housing portfolio of the municipality,” says Ndou, who also alleges that the specific councillor had in fact initially shared the cosy “RDP” mansion with the new owner.

According to Ndou, the DLGH, suspecting fraudulent dealings, brought the matter to the attention of the Musina mayor, in a written report, also advising disciplinary action against the specific councillor. Written enquiries to both the municipality and the department about the alleged letter remain unanswered.

In the recent spate of sometimes violent dem-onstrations in Musina against the mayor and the Chief Whip, irregularities regarding housing were a prominent issue. The RRC requested the creation of a task team to listen to and address problems that people have about housing. The mayor’s official written reply to this reads: “An affective (sic) housing unit is attending to all housing needs in this municipality.”

The councillor whose name is linked to the Ex-tension 8 stand saga allegedly remains connected to the mayor’s “affective” housing unit.

Mavungu Patrick Ngale was allegedly defrauded out of an RDP house on a stand which was allocated to him by the provincial department of local government and housing.

National Science Week

Ladies Circle 4 of Makhado walked away with the shield for best Circle in South Africa during Ladies Circle South Africa’s annual general meeting held at the Natal Spa (Ermelo) at the end of May. They won the prestigious Circle for, among others, being the Circle with the smallest number of members but who raised the most money towards charity during 2011/12. Pictured from left to right are Circlers Riana Otto, Belinda Fourie, Hettie Botha (immediate past chairperson), Ria van Zyl (chairperson), Enica Kadyamatimba and Taryn Annandale.

Budding scientists can start getting ready for National Sci-ence Week from 30 July until 5 August.

This initiative by the Depart-ment of Science and Technol-ogy (DST) is a countrywide celebration of science, involving businesses, universities, science centres, schools and astronomy clubs, as well as other stake-holders.

The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA) has been assigned to coordinate this effort in promoting public aware-ness of science, engineering and technology (SET), as well as stimulating and increasing the interest of SET among learners,

educators and the general public at various venues in all nine the provinces.

The theme of this year’s sci-ence week is “The Role of Sci-ence in Economic Develop-ment”, and with South Africa now a major role player in the building and operation of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope, the world’s largest and most sensitive radio tel-escope, to be constructed in the Karoo region, presentations and hand-out material on the SKA will feature prominently. The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club (SAC) in Makhado is proud to be associated with this initiative by the Department of Science and Technology to include astronomy

during the week’s celebrations and will conduct a road show of astronomy-related activities, which will include information and presentations on South Af-rica’s involvement in the SKA.

Interested parties, including schools, education facilities, sci-ence centres, shopping centres and clubs, can contact Mr Kos Coronaios on 079 148 4934 or by email at [email protected] to discuss astronomy-related activities they may wish to host during the science week. These activities include solar view-ing during the day, building of moon scopes and southern star wheels, information on the SKA, astronomy displays and related talks and stargazing.

Donate a book and help needy childrenLocal residents also have an opportunity to donate books to the Nelson Mandela founda-tion, which distributes books to needy school children. The books can be dropped off at any Pick n Pay hypermarket or store from the 1st to the 17th of July.

The books will be donated to the Nelson Mandela Founda-tion’s 94+ School project, an initiative that supports Man-dela’s 94th birthday and legacy

by giving hope and dignity to 94+ disadvantaged learners, and the Container Libraries project, which promotes a reading cul-ture. Bronwen Rohland, Pick n Pay’s director of marketing and sustainability, said it was vitally important that all children have access to books from a young age. “Books open a door to a whole new world - through read-ing, children not only improve their grammar and vocabulary but also learn about people and

places from other parts of the world, improving their under-standing of and concern for all people,” Rohland said.

“It is a privilege for Pick n Pay to be working together with the Nelson Mandela Foundation – let us not forget that Tata Mandela has spoken about how reading sustained and kept him and his fellow prisoners up to date with the real world while they were imprisoned on Robben Island,” she said.

By navraag het Makhado munisipale woordvoerder mnr.

The organization behind Sep-tember’s “Rocking for Rhinos” festival was granted non-profit status by the Companies and Intellectual Property Commis-sion on 18 June, allowing the organization to begin raising funds for the festival and the benefiters of the event.

Amid national scandals in-volving organizations or indi-viduals claiming to be non-profit and using the funds raised for personal or other means, the Rocking for Rhinos team felt it was very important to ensure that they gained this status as soon as they could.

“Our non-profit organization provides an avenue for civic participation. We enable people

to assemble and work toward a common goal with intent to benefit the rhinos. Non-profit organizations provide an outlet for pluralism and solidarity and guarantee that the funds get allocated to the intended and advocated avenues. In our case, it’s all for the rhino’s protection,” states Storm Wolmarans, a team member of Rocking for Rhinos.

Further to this, the Rocking for Rhinos organization is currently in the process of gaining tax clearance, allowing the potential for increased donations from the public. Rocking for Rhinos also has a non-profit registered bank account with FNB.

“We are doing this to save a species from extinction and oper-

ate with complete transparency. Our bank statements and books are open to public scrutiny. We are doing this for the rhinos. I don’t want the next generation to see rhinos in history books as we once looked at dinosaurs” replied Lauren Saad, also a member of the Rocking for Rhinos team.

The Rocking for Rhinos fes-tival is a large-scale event being held over the weekend of World Rhino Day on 22 and 23 Septem-ber, with all profits raised going towards anti-poaching.

For more information, Rock-ing for Rhinos NPO and bank ac-count details are available online at www.rockingforrhinos.org (Issued by Jacqui Sive, Rocking for Rhinos media manager)

Following new regulations laid down by the Department of En-vironmental Affairs (DEA), no rhino-hunting permit requests will be given to Vietnam, Thai-land or China residents.

These new regulations came into effect in April, said the DEA in a statement last Tuesday.

These Asian countries were allegedly the main consumers of rhino horn, the DEA claims in the statement. The department further calls on animal rights ac-tivists to join hands with govern-ment in its efforts to curb rhino poaching in South Africa.

To date, South Africa has lost a total of 262 rhinos to illegal killings for the year and 173 individuals have been arrested in connection with rhino poaching. Currently, Limpopo has the high-est number of poached rhinos. At the time of going to press, a total of 36 killed rhinos have

been counted. The department said South

Africa would continue all its ef-forts locally and internationally to address the on-going scourge. Hence the amended norms and standards for the marking of rhinos and rhino horns, and for the hunting of rhinos for trophy-hunting purposes, says the DEA in the statement. The amended norms and standards came into effect on 10 April this year and include, among others, that the applicant must submit certain information to the issuing au-thority.

This information includes proof of membership of a hunt-ing association in the country of usual residence of the hunting cli-ent. The hunting association must be recognised by the government of residence of the hunting client, while a curriculum vitae indicat-ing the hunter’s experience in his

country of residence and proof of previous kinds of experience in the hunting of any African animals must accompany the application.

“These requirements enable the issuing authorities to de-termine whether the applicant is a bona fide hunter,” said the department’s spokesperson, Mr Albi Modise. Furthermore, the issuing authority must also take into consideration whether a country where the horn will be imported to has proper legislation to ensure that the horn or trophy will be used for the purpose as indicated on the permit.

Since they have taken these new steps, says the DEA, the number of applications for hunt-ing rhino has plummeted and no further applications from consumer states such as China, Vietnam and Thailand were received.

The Zoutpansberger’s website (www.zout-pansberger.co.za) offers rea ders a calendar entry service on their Events Page.

Visitors to the website can now list their calendar entries for upcoming events on the Events Page themselves. It is as easy as merely logging in on the Events Page through your existing Google, Facebook or Twitter accounts and uploading your entry. The entry will, however, not appear immediately as it has to go through a moderation process fi rst.

In addition, sport club administrators (and

for that matter church and school administra-tors) can contact us to directly submit events on the Events Page without a moderations process. If an administrator is listed as a user on the site, their calendar entries will show im-mediately. This function allows administrators to update events through the year on a platform used by ten others publications throughout the province as part of both a local and provincial calendar.

12 13 July 2012 ZOUTPANSBERGER

Foto verskaf.

Project Care Musina received 30 blankets from the Louis Trichardt Rotary Club on 12 June. From left to right are Rotarians Mr Peter Knott and Mr Godfrey Went, and Ms Debbie Mitchell and Ms Joy Delport from Project Care Musina. “The blankets will be distributed to the less privileged and most elderly folk in Musina. Thank you for going the extra mile and delivering these beautiful blankets right to our doorstep,” said Debbie. Photo supplied.

Being part of an advert produced by an in-ternational multi-billion-rand company does not happen to everyone regularly.

“It was absolutely fabulous to do something like that, something totally different. They used about 70 Limpopo girls in the advert, many of whom were local schoolgirls,” said Carolyn Ingram, a teacher at Ridgeway College in Ma-khado, who was responsible for the casting of the Johnson’s African Nurture television advert.

“Five of the Limpopo girls were featured and the rest were extras,” said Caity Hutchison of Johnson and Johnson. The main leads were from Johannesburg.

Abigail Ramovha, one of the Limpopo leads and a former Miss Northern Province and Miss Univen 2001, related her experience. “I was busy cooking when I got a call that auditions were tak-ing place at the Makhado show grounds. I just threw the apron down and went there. After two days, I got a call to come for the second round of auditions. I think they liked my natural hair,” Abigail said with a smile.

“The girls worked incredibly hard and had to be ready for make-up at four in the morning. They camped for four nights and three days and for some of them it was their first experience of camping,” said Carolyn.

Abigail could not communicate with her husband and two young boys, aged 4 and 6, for the whole of the shoot. “There was no network coverage! But the shooting was so exciting. We went to different places and shot in mountains, at a fountain, in valleys and at the largest baobab tree. In the end, they took only the best shots,” Abigail said.

Johnson and Johnson’s brand manager con-firmed that the ad was shot at Van Coller Pass in Waterpoort in November last year. The advert opens with the girls in a valley in the middle of the two mountain ranges, and ends with an aerial shot of all the girls moving around a baobab tree. In between are beautiful shots of women winding down the mountain, women among flowers and moving through a river. The river was actually not shallow, but Donald Fridjhon from Makhado built the platform that was under the water. Don-ald was the set and prop designer, did the location scouting and was the construction manager.

The women and girls look absolutely lovely in their flowing dresses in yellow, light green, dark green, pink, apricot, blue and purple. The colours represent almost all of the colours of the product range, which currently includes a body

lotion and a body cream. Baobab, combined with African Jasmine, is one of the seven combined fragrances used in the range. The baobab tree was very prominent in the advert.

“Our product development team confirms that we use an essence of baobab in the fragrance of the product. The products contain no oils. The product has been very well received, and after a month in the market, we are very happy with the results,” said Laura Nel, Johnson and Johnson’s head of corporate affairs on 3 July.

Another one of the Limpopo leads is also very happy, because she could pay her tuition fees with the generous remuneration she received. “It was a fantastic and challenging opportunity and I am grateful that I could pay for my IT studies,” said Virginia Ramovha. The extras were also remunerated.

Abigail Munaka Ramovha, a former Miss Northern Province and Miss Univen 2001, featured as a lead in the Johnson African Nurture television advert, filmed in the Van Coller Pass in Waterpoort.

14 13 July 2012 ZOUTPANSBERGER

Speed Brake in Makhado cel-ebrated their 20th anniversary on 6 July.

Over the last two decades, the business has grown into a household name through the capable hands of owner Johan Pretorius. However, says Johan, Speed Brake’s success cannot be attributed to him alone. “Were it not for our Heavenly Father and the support of my wife and loyal personnel, the business would not have been so successful,” says Johan.

Speed Brake opened its doors for business in 1992 on the premises where Clicks is situated today. It was a humble beginning for Johan, his wife Johanna and one employee, Thomas Sithole. Within a year, however, they had made such a name for themselves that they had to look for a bigger premises. Not long thereafter, Jo-han acquired the current premises and the business moved to Rissik Street, where they are still today. At present, Speed Brake boasts 20 staff members, with the busi-

ness specializing in the repair of brakes, CV joints, general repairs and wheel alignment. In short, they can repair any vehicle from bumper to bumper.

For any business to grow, it does not only have to adapt to the needs of a changing market but also needs to keep up with new technology. Johan realised this and in 2007, he expanded his services by opening a fit-ment centre specialising in wheel alignment and the fi tting of shock absorbers. (Contd on P15)

Speed Brake opened its doors for business in 1992 on the premises where Clicks is situated today. Within a year they had made such a name for themselves that they had to look for a bigger premises. Not long thereafter, Johan acquired a new premises and the business moved to Rissik Street where they are still today. This photo was taken shortly after they moved to Rissik Street.

Speed Brake as it looks today. Over the last twenty years, the business premises was expanded to, among other, also make provision for a fi tment centre.

In 1992, Johan Pretorius and his wife Johanna, together with one employee, Thomas Sithole (left), started Speed Brake. Thomas is still with Speed Brake and in recognition of his loyal service, Johan last week rewarded him with a special watch.

1513 Julie 2012ZOUTPANSBERGER(Contd from P14)In January this year, he also pur-

chased a head seat and guide valve milling machine, which now allows Speed Brake to skim cylinder heads, cut head pockets and change valve guides.

These new services, which also comprise serdi and mira tooling, are delivered by trained staff. “The machine is able to work on any cyl-inder head, from a motorcycle to a bulldozer,” says Johan.

Looking at the future, Johan has already started investing in new heavy-duty machinery that will soon enable Speed Brake to work on heavy vehicles’ brakes.

In all respects Speed Brake is a fam-ily business, with Johan and sons JC and Tinus all being qualifi ed vehicle mechanics. On the administrative

side are Johanna and daughter-in-law Marjorie, with sister-in-law Koba a familiar face and voice when it comes to quotations.

“We would like to thank our Heav-enly Father for taking the lead in mak-ing this business a success, as well as for the loyal support of our staff and our clients who continue making use of our services. We would also like to thank Du Toit’s Engineering and LTT Brake & Clutch for their support en quality service towards us. Thank you also to all the businesses who have placed ads to congratulate us,” says Johan.

Speed Brake is situated on the cor-ner of Rissik and Meijer Street and can be contacted at tel. 015 516 1248. “We remain committed to rendering guar-anteed service and quality workman-ship and spare parts,” says Johan.

In January this year, they also purchased a head seat and guide valve milling machine which now allows Speed Brake to skim cylinder heads, cut head pockets and change valve guides. Seen here operating the machine are Tinus Pretorius (left) and Sico Erasmus (right).

Looking at the future, Speed Brake has already started investing in new heavy-duty machinery that will soon enable Speed Brake to work on heavy vehicles’ brakes. Pictured here with some of the new machinery are brothers Tinus (left) and JC Pretorius (right).

In 2007, Speed Brake expanded their range of services with the opening of a fi tment centre specialising in wheel alignment and the installation of shock absorbers. Pictured here are Hannes Venter (right) and Patrick Nemahagala (left) doing some inspection work.

oor aldrie dae aanteken.Die eerste Hanglip 54 is in 1994

aangebied.

spelers.

SBV Services have extended their footprint by opening new centres in the booming Makhado and Burgersfort areas on 5 July.

The launch of the two centres is part of the organisation’s growth strategy, which entails introducing new and upgrad-ing existing cash centres in high-cash-demand areas. The investment in each centre’s de-velopment was approximately R20 million. Furthermore, only local contractors were used to effect the construction, which has contributed greatly to the

economic activity within both areas.

The new cash centres have been introduced in response to the ever-growing demand for cash management services in these areas, pointing to growing economic activity in the regions in recent times. The regions were identified as high-cash-demand areas on the back of a boom in the retail, mining and farming sectors. These areas previously relied on the Polok-wane SBV cash centre to collect and deliver cash to and from re-tail and banks’ branch premises.

The increase in demand for cash services in the two areas led to a need to improve sup-ply chain efficiency, hence the establishment of the two new fully fledged cash centres.

The Makhado and Burg-ersfort centres’ services in-clude wholesale and retail cash processing and management, wholesale cash operations, preparation of payroll and float orders for retailers, retail and wholesale cash-in-transit, wholesale cash processing and ATM services, including pack-ing and replenishment.

It took him 19 days and 8 hours, but Dr Casper Venter managed to fi nish the gruelling Freedom Challenge. A visibly thinner and bearded Casper arrived in Diemersfontein near Wellington on Saturday morning to claim his Basotho blanket.

This completed a cycling journey that started in Pietermaritzburg almost three weeks earlier and included 2 300 kilometres of mountain passes, river crossings and weather that ranged from hot sun to snow and ice cold rain in the Karoo.

“It is almost surreal, not cycling. For 19 days that’s what you did for

10 hours plus every day, come rain, sun, wind or snow,” Casper wrote on his blog this week.

“ It was such an incredible ex-perience. I saw and experienced things and plac-es in my country that I didn’t even know existed,” he said.

The doctor from Makhado tackled this toughest of tough races to collect money for a local cancer

charity, the Makhado Care Group. Through his efforts, he hoped to raise more than

R100 000 for the organisation that cares for local cancer patients.

C a s p e r w a s very grateful for the overwhel ming support he received during the race.

“Thank you to everyone who was interested, SMSed and blogged me. You kept me go-

ing. To all who donated and sponsored - thank you. Your money will be well spent via the care group to help those with cancer in our community. The truth is that my race is truly insignifi cant compared to the race they still have to run.”

Out of the 47 riders who entered for this endur-ance event, 19 withdrew before fi nishing. Casper’s time put him in an overall 12th place, which is an exceptional achievement for someone who has never done the race before. The race was won by Martin Dreyer in a time of 10 days, 16 hours and 40 minutes. Casper could only express admiration for the skill and tenacity of the winners. “Very few people will truly understand what you have achieved,” he said. Casper will be spending a few days with friends and family in the Western Cape before returning home next week.

“Sometimes you do something and it turns out to be so much more than you expect it to be. This race was like that. It truly embraced what I stand for and what I feel mountainbiking is about. For 19 days I could play and revel in just being on the bike and being a part of this incredible adventure,” he said.
