The Ypsilanti Phoenixfootball team made a state-ment on Friday night whenit hosted Tecumseh.

The Phoenix over pow-ered their opponent in abig way, winning the gamehandily, 47-23.

Tonight was just agreat game, Ypsilanticoach Jason Malloy said.

Weve been waiting fora breakout game like thisfor awhile, and tonight wegot it.

The Phoenix were domi-nant over the Indians, tak-ing a 7-0 lead after the firstquarter and a 20-0 lead atthe half.

I was really impressedwith the way our offenseplayed, and the way wekept after them after get-ting a lead, Malloy said.Ypsilanti opened the scor-ing late in the first quar-ter when Aaerion Allenconnected with MarquezGollman for a 10-yardscore.

After that, it was alldownhill for the Indians.Allen passed for two morescores in the second quar-ter, a 15-yard pass and a5-yard pass, both to DevonThompson.

After the break,Ypsilanti kept up the scor-ing parade when AustinSander broke away for a40-yard scoring run on thefirst Phoenix possession ofthe half.

Tecumseh finally got onthe board late in the thirdquarter, but by that time, the hole was too deep toclimb out of.

The Phoenix added threemore touchdowns in thefourth quarter and took thegame by a large margin.

Its nice to get a big winonce in awhile, Malloy

said. These kids deserveit, they have been workinghard.

Allen finished the gameby going 15-for-18 throughthe air for 299 yards andthree touchdowns.

Thompson led the receiv-ers with eight catches for134 yards and two touch-downs, while Sanders ledthe rushing attack with 88yards on 14 carries and twotouchdowns.

We threw it aroundthis game, he said. Wehave a lot of talented good

receivers and athletes andwe wanted to do somethingdifferent.

He said a balance attackfrom the air and on theground has been the goalall season.

On defense he said thatGollman, Trey Sweeneyand Ryan Griffin all playedwell.

John Adamovicz medaledplacing 19th in the boys race.

I was expecting him to runabout 20-25 seconds faster,

Green said Andrew Elliotand Adam Barber both ran sig-nificantly faster than in theirprevious races.

The girls were led by MarinaGeider (ninth), Emily Czinski(22nd), and Alexa Geider (31st)all of whom medaled. AleahKramaczyk (36th) just missedout on a medal.

All of the girls except Alexafar exceeded my expectationsfor this race, Green said.Alexa was battling an illness,so that was expected.

    CROSS-COUNTRY

    Ypsilanti takesit to Tecumseh

The Phoenix football teamreached .500 last week witha very convincing win over

the Tecumseh Indians. Thisyears team has one major com-ponent that it was missing inthe past: team work.

The team plays a lot morelike a family and a lot less likea bunch of individuals who areall looking to be stars. Theyshare the good and the bad witheach other. Granted a few ofthem are more athletic than therest, but that doesnt mean theyare not a team.

Ypsilanti teams in the pasthave been a little bit more aboutme and a little less about team.Under coach Jason Malloy thatisnt how things work for theteam. He is concerned aboutall of his students. The reasonI say student and not athlete isPhoenix players have to havegood grades in order to play thesport.

There is also a presence onthe field about the team. Theyare confident, but not cocky. Ihave been very impressed withtheir attitudes and the way theybehave on and off the field.

Malloy has even said on morethan one occasion that thesekids need show the communityand school they are good indi-viduals.

That speaks volumes overwho is better on the footballfield. If these kids can learnlessons they will take with themfor the rest of their lives, thento me that is better than win-ning any kind of championship.Wins will come and go for anyteam, but the measure of truesuccess is the ability of a playerto be respected for what they doboth on and off the field.

Malloy has that mindset. Youcan tell he was brought up rightand that he is a man of strongbeliefs. He passes that down tohis coaching staff, as well as hisplayers. It shows and the kidsrespect him for it.

So far this season they havehad some awesome results. At2-2 they are 1,000 times betterthan they were last season. Thetwo losses were 14-13 to Chelseaand 25-24 to Milan. Two gamesby two points is very impres-sive.

Austin Sanders has been onfire since the start of the seasonaveraging well over 100 yardsa game as a junior. Last weekthey went to the air againstTecumseh and Aaerion Allenthrew for 299 yards and fourtouchdowns.

This team is dangerous andI really think if anyone takesthem lightly it will be a long

    night for that team.
