T he Algarve is known as one of Europe’s best golfing destinations. The area in and
around the so-called Golden Triangle is home to a wide variety of golf courses that are
maintained to the highest standards and can be considered as Europe’s finest. One of
these is San Lorenzo Golf Course. Designed by American golf course architect Joseph Lee and
opened in 1988, the course is beautifully located within the prestigious luxury resort of Quinta
do Lago, while bordering the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve.
The opening holes of San Lorenzo should get you off to a comfortable start, as they are not
too tricky and quiet fair. Coming to the fifth, a short Par 3 with elevated green, things start to
become more difficult. Depending on the strength and direction of the wind, this Par 3 over a
deep dip can be played with a wedge to a 5 iron. The 6th and the 7th holes, which are not too
long, but quite narrow, really need well-placed shots to keep you in play. Both these holes play
alongside the Ria Formosa, where most of the time you will be accompanied by spectators,
taking a walk and enjoying the Ria Formosa’s wildlife. These spectators tend to add to the
pressure, as you don’t want to shank, hook or pull your next shot with so many people watching.
The Par-5 8th is played beside the lake, where you can admire the amazing wildlife San Lorenzo
has to offer. Many different species of birds can be seen around this hole. Playing onto a green that
is practically an island, this is one of the most alluring Par 5s of the course. The back nine is more
difficult, as the Par 5s and Par 3s are quiet long and tricky, and it is easy to lose a few shots there.
The 17th and 18th are two holes to remember. Two Par 4s played alongside a lake that loves to
swallow up golf balls and hence pull down your score. Whatever score you bring in, this course
will make you want to come back for more!
Another recommended golf course in the area is Pinheiros Altos. This 27-hole cham-
pionship golf course is set in the luxury resort of Pinheiros Altos. Originally designed as an
18-hole golf course it was extended in 2007 to 27 holes (three sets of nine); The Pines, The
Corks and The Olives. This lovely course does not play long, but somehow it is always diffi-
cult to bring in a good score. The course demands well-positioned shots and on and around
the greens in particular you need to be on top of your game.
Pinheiros Altos also features an exceptional Golf Academy. Inaugurated by Lee Westwood,
in 2003, and with facilities updated in 2016, Pinheiros Altos Golf Academy offers V1 and
Flight scope launch monitor technology to help you with your golf game. Knowledgeable
and experienced British P.G.A. professionals are on hand to coach any level of player and to
help improve their game. The Golf Academy at Pinheiros Altos includes two fully-equipped
teaching bays and two bays including custom fitting, fitness and a putting studio to help you
find suitable equipment under professional guidance. The practice facilities allow for up to
30 players at a time to work on their long game, while two practice putting greens and a
superb chipping/bunker area means there’s no excuse for not improving your game. Also
available is a private training area for groups at the far end of the driving range, which can
be used for a multitude of purposes.
The Algarve and its incredible golf facilities await you…

YOUR GOLF STIG
CONRAD ALGARVENever just stay. Stay inspired.
T he Conrad Algarve is one of the best hotels you can find in
the Algarve. The level of quality and service is pretty much
unmatched. It is a contemporary luxurious hotel and it boasts
its very own style, reminiscent of Portuguese Palaces from the 18th
century. It harmoniously combines the most advanced technologies
with sumptuous accommodation and magnificent surroundings.
Stood in the exclusive and naturally appealing setting of Quinta do
Lago, guests can explore the Ria Formosa Nature Park, stunning golden
beaches and the region’s finest golf courses, using the tips of the hotel’s
Golf Concierge and the PGA Pro, Fernando Nogueira.
When it comes to culinary choices, the Conrad’s line-up is dazzling.
Beyond the wonderful Louro, with its own take of modern Portuguese
cuisine, all attention is focused on Gusto. If you’re not already a
fan, prepare yourself for a fine dining experience of monumental
proportions. Admirably led by its chef, bearer of three Michelin stars
Heinz Beck, the menu offers haute cuisine with a Mediterranean
touch, extracting every possibility out of local ingredients. Personally,
we always opt for a table near to the open kitchen. You can watch a
prodigious team of chefs carefully preparing every dish, in a piece of art
that you’ll never want to forget.
But the Conrad is much more than this, making your stay only one facet
of the journey. At the Conrad you’ll have the chance to immerse in the
local culture through a selection of signature experiences that the hotel
proudly describes as of “Algarvian Enrichment”. Each experience reflects
a local take on the real Algarve, art, food, and adventure, so you can make
the most of your trip, even when time is at a premium. Go digging for
clams in Ria Formosa with a local fisherman; discover the flavours of the
Algarve visiting the old market town of Loulé with executive chef, Osvalde
Silva, and learn how to select the best ingredients. Why not top it all off
with a hands-on master class in how to prepare the ingredients you’ve
just seen at the market? Want to keep the kids happy? Meet and interact
with a Portuguese water dog for a day. You’ll discover why they’re the
Algarve’s choice canine. For the adventurous, explore the historic cork
route and finish the day with the typical Medronho, a liqueur made from
the fruit of the “strawberry tree”.
With so many possibilities, you’ll be hard put to choose. Guests don’t
just come to enjoy an exceptional and bespoke experience, they come
to discover and be inspired by the real Algarve, whilst immersing
themselves in the highest levels of style and sophistication.

Imagine finding yourself in an idyllic setting, where nature surrounds
you in magical landscape of palaces and castles of unique beauty.
Where every event recalls a history of kings and princes, of poets
and nymphs, of a long forgotten time, but of a carefully preserved
mystique. A place in which the gigantic Atlantic, sparkling at the feet of
Cabo da Roca, at continental Europe’s most western point, meets the
natural colossus of Pena National Park, which holds timeless secrets and
mysteries, at the heart of its enigmatic grandeur.
Heading north, just three hours from the Algarve, and a few kilometres
west of the Portuguese capital, we find the place that Lord Byron
christened Eden – the magnificent town of Sintra.
A legendary place, in which you can find records of many eras of
Portugal’s history, as well as proof of a Neolithic, Roman, Moorish and
finally Christian past, Sintra is a living museum, endowed with unrivalled
cultural and natural wealth. As such, it has been praised in world literature
by names such as S.L. Coleridge and William Wordsworth, or Portugal’s
Eça de Queirós, and subsequently has been recognised as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site.
The friendly town, used to the buzz of tourism since the 19th century, in
which the romantic spirit of the period brought in many foreign visitors,
attracted by the pull of its mysticism and beauty, prioritises hospitality,
focusing on gastronomic diversity, the welcoming nature of the locals and
on the entire natural and architectural spectrum of its surroundings.
A walking tour of the main historic and scenic landmarks is essential,
as there is so much to see in Sintra, for which you will need your legs.
Fortunately, there is a good local transport network to make your
tour much easier. In any event, venturing out on foot, or on your bike,
wherever the lay of the land suits it, will surely prove a gratifying
experience. Every corner is magical and worthy of all your attention.
Alternatively, in the town centre, you can opt for the romantic suggestion
the friendly man offers with his carriage rides.
As if taken straight out of a fairytale, the Nature Park is crowned
by the National Palace of Pena, the former residence of several
Portuguese monarchs, considered the first romantic-style palace in
Europe. The colourful palace can be viewed, just to the north, from its
Moorish ancestor, the Moorish Castle, a stone wall winding along the
crest of the mountain, which dates back to the 10th century, offering
unique views of the town and down to the coast and the vast horizon
of the Atlantic Ocean.
Following the road heading out of the town, flowing into the immense
green of the natural surroundings, you come across one of the country’s
most mystical places - the Quinta da Regaleira. A magical place, fronted
by a small palace, marked by esotericism, of architecture stunningly
based on the gothic, romantic and renaissance styles, highlighted by
details alluding to the elements of alchemy and templar, Masonic and
Rosicrucian symbolism, adorning the various façades of the buildings
and of the network of tunnels and grottos, extending throughout the
vast garden, in which countless statues of classical mythological gods
endure the test of time.
High up in the mountains of the Serra de Sintra, lost among the
vegetation and huge ancient rocks, dotting the landscape, hides another
treasure, the Convent of the Capuchos. Founded in the 16th century
by Franciscan monks, who were looking for harmony far from urban
centres and for communion with nature, humble buildings have been fit
into the rocks, in perfect symbiosis with the local landscape, containing
tiny rooms, lined with local cork, formerly used for meditation purposes
by members of the order.
There is still time to pay a visit to the Palace of Monserrate, an
architectural masterpiece famously celebrating the 19th-century
environment of romanticism, with its lush garden surrounding it, with
waterfalls, small lakes and bridges, which left Lord Byron so moved so as
to immortalise it in the “Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage”. Finally, a landmark
that celebrates the atmosphere experienced at that time, the romantic
refuge of King Ferdinand II and the Countess of Elba, responsible
for the magnificence of the Pena National Park, as well as for the
renovation of countless buildings throughout the region – the Chalet of
the Countess, a picturesque alpine-style building, which the couple lived
in during the summer.

Looking for a typical restaurant to grab a bite? Visit Dona Clara at Culto da Tasca and

Lisbon “doesn’t smell of Fado, but it has no other song …” in SANTOS, Ary dos e OULMAN, Alain. Alfama.
As night falls, with the romantic spell of Sintra lingering in your heart,
there’s still time to delve into what most reveals the Portuguese soul –
the nation’s food and music.
Climbing to the top of Lisbon’s Bairro Alto neighbourhood, a labyrinth
of picturesque narrow lanes, dotted with small bars and restaurants,
you reach Café Luso, a cult venue for anyone eager to listen to the most
Portuguese music of all - Fado.
Attentive service, devoted to providing guests with a unique experience,
which combines appetite and a good wine with the Portuguese heart,
through melancholic voices and the mournful Portuguese guitar. The
fadistas pass through the dining room, often encouraging your table to
sing along to the most jovial parts, seeing as the sorrow typical to Fado is
interspersed by lively “desgarrada” duets.
And if your hunger has been satisfied, your ears will certainly be asking
for more, especially as Fado echoes throughout Lisbon well into the
night. The neighbourhood of Alfama might be the right place to go to
next, but before you head there, pop into the Tasca do Chico, in the
Bairro Alto still. If you find a lost tourist, invite them to come with you,
because you’re sure to strike up a conversation, interspersed with
more Fado, which locals say is the real Fado, the Fado Vadio, which is
the salt of the earth. You may even shed a tear, as this kind of singing
comes straight from the heart. There won’t be much time for lamenting
however, as succulent grilled chouriço and another glass of fine wine has
just landed on your table, bringing back a sense of celebration and joie
de vivre à portuguesa, courtesy of Chico da Tasca.
Fado the most portuguese music of all. You will probably shed a tear, as this kind of singin comes straight from the heart.”

Located within a small palace of Moorish architecture, voted
many times Europe’s and the World’s Leading Boutique Hotel,
Vila Joya restaurant is a veritable gastronomic paradise. The
stunning views over the Atlantic, the dunes of golden sand and
the lush gardens produce a fairytale backdrop for enjoying a
truly breathtaking culinary experience.
The task of earning and retaining two Michelin stars for the last
17 years in a row and achieving the World’s Leading Fine Dining
Hotel Restaurant award, just to name a few, fall at the feet of
prodigious Austrian chef Dieter Koschina. We surrendered to his
skills and to the improbable yet perfect combinations blending
technique, creativity and beauty in a four-hour spectacle. The
unrivalled freshness and quality of local ingredients and the subtle
union of varying aromas, colours, flavours and textures, gave rise,
through the maestro’s magic, to dishes with unique personality
that will remain etched in our memory and palate. In the special
case that Vila Joya represents, it would be impossible to suggest
specialities not to be missed because, incredible and improbable
as it may seem, the tasting menu changes every day, while the
essence and quality remain rock- steady. We are however, certain
that whatever menu you experience it will be superb and in full
harmony with the choice of wine made by the sommelier from the
12,000 different bottles of the finest wines from Portugal and
beyond in Vila Joya’s cellar.
T H E X FAC TO R
There isn’t just one exceptional thing about this restaurant. To
conclude we can simply pass on our thanks for the amazing service,
the delicateness and friendly attitude of the employees, who always
make us feel an integral part of this House of Jewels, admirably
headed by Joy, who wonderfully continues the legacy of Claudia
Jung – the inspiring and creative muse behind this paradise on
earth. When you go there, please “kiss the cook” for us.
If food is love, Vila Joya is without a doubt
the home of Eros and Dieter Koshina his
worthy messenger.

As soon as you enter this large, yet elegant and welcoming space, your
expectations skyrocket. The combination of glass, textiles, metals
and different intensities of light creates different environments
throughout the room. The impressive wine cellar, with its enviable
contents, proudly displays a selection of more than 200 wines,
carefully selected by the owner, João Lourenço. The concept: sharing
a host of gastronomic experiences firmly enrooted in the Algarve,
thanks to the choice of more than 50 tapas on the menu. According
to João, his challenge each day is to amaze guests with simple things,
but with attention to detail. Emphasising what is genuine in the dishes,
enriching them with a dash of refinement.
PAIXA Love at first sight.
D O N ’ T M I S S
Identifying the tapas that you simply shouldn’t miss out on is a thankless
task, given the vast variety to choose from. Nevertheless, it would be
crime to go to Paixa without trying the ‘scallop without coral’ or the
crab tartare. The dill gives it that divine touch. We also recommend the
melt-in-the-mouth roast beef, the braesola carpaccio, the creamy game
sausage and the acclaimed Black Angus ‘pica-pau’ with pickles and garlic.
It would be a sin not to sample the desserts too. At the first touch of your
spoon, the casing of the chocolate cake melts away to free its creamy
interior. As for the dark chocolate mousse, it has everything you could
ever want in a mousse. It’s light, fluffy and intense. We’d like to apologise
for repeating the word “chocolate”, but it’s Senhor João’s fault.
T H E X FAC TO R
Respect for products and their quality. You should also know that, whether
a meal for two, in a group, a late lunch, or even if you feel peckish in the
middle of the afternoon, Paixa is open from midday, right through to the
evening and until the last guest leaves.

THE KING OF FISH AND SHELLFISH
CASA DOS PINHEIROS
T H E R E S TAU R A N T
Casa dos Pinheiros is one of our favourite restaurants for enjoying the
gems the Algarve’s waters offer us, and for many reasons. For Álvaro, the
eatery’s owner and a great friend, who knows how to welcome guests
“à la portuguesa” like no other, making us feel right at home. For the
fun atmosphere provided by the extremely professional and attentive
members of staff, whose great sense of humour infects us on every visit.
For chef Marcelo Tomas, a young talent with a future that is certainly
bright, who knows how to enhance Portuguese cuisine through simple
means and how to perfectly produce the range of specialities of this
eatery. For the pleasant outdoor space and its surroundings, ensuring
we can enjoy great al fresco meals. And, of course, for the taste of the
delicacies, which we’ll analyse next.
D O N ’ T M I S S
To get the taste buds primed, we normally go for the “à la Guillo” shrimps,
browned in olive oil and garlic, for the delicious scallops, sautéed in butter
and cooked to perfection, or for the traditional “à Bulhão Pato” clams.
Always save a slice of bread to soak up the leftover juices, but don’t go
crazy, because we haven’t made it to the main course yet. There are, at
least, three dishes that are a sure-fire bet at Casa dos Pinheiros. The
“cataplanas”, considered the highlight of the restaurant; the rice specialities
and the famous ‘fish in salt’. The latter is based on the principle that less is
more. Fresh fish wrapped in a thick crust of salt, which ensures that this is
slowly released, while preserving all of the fish’s juices. For fans of citrus
flavours, don’t miss out on the sea bass with lemon sauce. Simply delicious!
Not feeling like fish or shellfish? How about duck breast with orange, or a
tournedos with Béarnaise sauce? The best way to finish, without a doubt,
is the “Casa dos Pinheiros” crêpe – an adapted version of the famous crêpe
Suzette, marvellously produced by the lovely Dominique.
T H E X FAC TO R
The unrivalled freshness of the fish and shellfish. The savoir-faire of the
kitchen team, in addition to the friendly service and familiar environment,
typical of this establishment.

PEACOCK REVEALS A NEW PLUMAGE
T H E R E S TAU R A N T
Located in the magnificent Quinta do Lago resort, in the Monte da Quinta development,
the Peacock is proudly boasting new plumage this year. With a new extension and
the creation of a ‘lounge’ area, and in particular with the arrival of a Tenku style open
kitchen, allowing guests to watch the entire cooking process, as well as the brand new
menu compiled by chef Roeland Klein, Monte da Quinta has redefined the gastronomic
experience in the development. The vast knowhow of chef Klein – favouring the use of
the finest and freshest of local produce – together with time he has spend in countless
countries, ensure a Mediterranean and Asian influence to the Peacock’s cuisine.
D O N ’ T M I S S
The starters are a must. In addition to the Pata Negra cured ham and one of the finest salamis
(with anise), which we were lucky enough to try, we suggest you ask if the kitchen can rustle
up an assortment of tapas for you, so that you can delight in the many starters available. As
for the main course, our top pick would be the house speciality - the dry-aged meat, which
melts like butter. One that we particularly like is the grilled Tomahawk with potato salad, green
asparagus and red wine sauce. The coconut curry tiger prawns with lobster sauce with kaffir
lime are another excellent option. Beyond the menu, the chef prepares some daily treats, under
the name ‘Peacock’s Treasures’, using seasonal ingredients sourced from local markets and
suppliers. Ending on a sweet note, we love the white chocolate mousse with basil, seasoned
orange and marinated pineapple!

With its location like no other, on the beach, the António Tá Certo
restaurant boasts a great deal of experience, having been one of

run by Senhor António’s daughter, Irondina, who you’ll probably see
dashing around the space doing 1001 things at the same time, and
who, together with her husband Rui – in charge of the grill –, ensure
that you will enjoy the finest fish, grilled to perfection. Try to book a
table on the terrace just before sunset, sit back comfortably and allow
yourself to be guided by the staff’s recommendation, who have been
working there for many years, while soaking up some of the finest
views over the beach, in the company of nicely chilled wine. Visit and
take delight in two of best things the Algarve has to offer – golden
sandy beaches and unique quality fish.
D O N ’ T M I S S
The clams “ao natural” are delicious but the house-style shrimps (from
Quarteira!) are just to die for. With respect to the main course, the concept
of this restaurant is simple: expertise in (meat, but in particular) grilled
fish. Indeed, grilling fish over coals is one of the most authentic ways of
enhancing their freshness and flavour. When you visit, in addition to the
contents of the menu, make sure you pay attention to the magnificent
chilled cabinet at the entrance to the restaurant, in which you can see the
fresh result of Irondina’s visit to the market in Quarteira and the leave the
rest to the skills of the grill master. On our last visit we were lucky to enjoy
some of the finest anchovies ever. To finish, we always find it hard to resist
the chocolate cake or the traditional fig, carob and almond pudding.

Throughout the three generations of the Janeiro family, the Veneza has taken on
many guises. From a grocery store in 1954, to a dance hall in the 1970s, in which
many major names in Portugal’s music scene could be heard, to finally become the
Veneza restaurant, in 1983, when Dona Maria José took the reins of the kitchen.
Thanks to her grandmother’s knowhow and to advice from old dears living around
her, Maria José gradually perfected her culinary creations, which started to make
a name for the restaurant. At the same time, Manel Janeiro kept adding to his
collection of rare wines, enticing more and more guests, before he ended up moving
his entire cellar to the restaurant. This is when the fusion between restaurant and
wine cellar took place, adding a new dimension to the concept outlined since its
opening. Many awards have resulting from this union, including “Best National Wine
Cellar 2006” and the gold prize for “European Restaurant 2012”, at the 7th edition
of the Europa Excellence Enogastronomic congress. And, with good reason. With
more than 1000 wines and 700 port wines, it is one heck of a wine cellar.

When visiting the restaurant, we recommend you choose from the selection of the
day. These specialities of old flavours are cooked for many hours over a low heat and
boast special marinades. The ‘mountain style’ bean soup is a must, for its tradition
and for it typical flavours of the Barrocal area*. The pork cheeks melt in your
mouth like butter. If the specials include ‘ensopado de borrego’ lamb stew, or ‘rabbit
chasseur’, be sure to give them a go. To finish, if you’ve still got room for something
sweet, we suggest the chocolate mousse or the assortment of sweets, made up of
carob cookies, figs and toasted almonds – small almonds toasted to perfection, as
tradition demands.
T H E X F A C T O R
The ability to eat as you did when sat at your grandmother’s table, while enjoying
access to a wine list that is the standout feature of this family establishment.
A special mention for the wineplease service, a system that preserves the
organoleptic properties of the wine, keeping it at the ideal serving temperature.
With an ever-changing selection, it allows you taste great wines from Portugal and
the world during your meal, or even to decide on which bottle to buy to take home. CO
