Young Israel of Greater Cleveland
January 2019 Newsletter-Teves/Shevat 5779
From the Rabbi’s Shtender
Dear Member,
I am proud to tell you that we have made tremendous strides in our goal to pay off our
mortgage for our building. With the help and dedication of our membership we are almost there.
Thank you to everyone for your past, present, and, Im Yirtzeh Hashem, future support going
forward. We could not have done it without everyone’s commitment and trust.
It seems like everyone is always out raising money. In our community, which is seeing
tremendous growth, it is a fact of life. All the causes are important. We find ourselves in the
position where we must choose between causes and decide our own list of priorities. Many of our
local causes are of great importance to us. I would like to stress two of them.
We recently made an emergency appeal for our local Matan B’ayser. As our community has
grown, so have the needs. If you did respond to our appeal, that is great, and if not, please
consider doing so. Please send any donations directly to Matan B’Sayser.
At this time of year, our local Erev has its annual campaign. It is hard to imagine what our
community would look like without an Erev. If you haven’t already responded, please do so.
Thank you for your generosity and continued support of our worthy causes.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein

January 1: Legal Holiday Breakfast & Learning Program:
Topic: “Legally Drinking—The Sherry Cask Debate”
In the morning one of the first lines in our prayer is: ראשית חכמה יראת ה‘ “The beginning of
wisdom is fear of Hashem”. It would seem more appropriate to refer to the fear of Hashem as the
beginning of piety rather than wisdom.
One of the Chassidic masters interpreted the above verse (a little) differently than the
traditional approach. He suggested that “The fear of Hashem” refers not to man’s fear of Hashem,
but to Hashem’s fear. Hashem has decreed that people have free will. Although everything else
in the world is under Divine control, Hashem wishes our moral choice to be free, and He therefore
does not intervene to influence our moral decisions. Since Hashem wishes us to be good, He has
a fear that we will harm ourselves by sin. It is similar to the fear that parents have that their
children may harm themselves by doing things that they do not recognize as dangerous.
It would be wise if we had the fear that Hashem has for us, namely, that we might sin. We
therefore show wisdom, and not just piety, if we devote our attention to fear Hashem.

IMPORTANT WINTER SHACHARIS REMINDER
The earliest time one may put on Tallis & Tefillin is from a time called “Mi-She-Yakir,” which is
approximately one hour before sunrise. For those davening at our earlier minyanim (6:40-6:45 am), the
two recommended solutions to this problem are as follows:
Begin Shacharis and wait to put on Tallis & Tefillin after Yishtabach (except for the Shliach
Tzibur who puts them on before Yishtabach)
Put on the Tallis & Tefillin before davening without a bracha and after completing Yishtabach
move the Tallis and Tefillin slightly and recite the bracha.
