Weekly Words from

The Rock

Let us try the same exercise continuing our focus on the Bread of Life discourse (John 6).

1. John 6:53: Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you _____ the flesh of the Son of Man and _____ his blood, you do not have life within you.

2. John 6:54: Whoever _____ my flesh and _____ my blood has eternal life, and I will _____ him on the last day.

3. John 6:55: For my flesh is _____ food, and my blood is _____ drink.

4: John 6:56: Whoever _____ my flesh and _____ my blood ______ in me and I in him.”

5. John 6:60: Then many of his disciples who were listening said, “This saying is _____; who can accept it?”

6: John 6:63: The words I (Jesus) have spoken to you are ______ and ______.

7: John 6:64: But there are some of you who do not ______.

8: John 6:66: As a result of this, many of his disciples ________to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.

9: John 6:67: Jesus then said to the Twelve, “Do you also want to _______?”

10. John 6:68-69: Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of ______ _____. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the _____ _____ of God.”

Good luck! I will provide the answers next week.

Anointing of the Sick

This weekend, at all the Masses, we provide the opportunity for people to receive the Anointing of the Sick. In my column last week, I provided some basic teachings on the Anointing of the Sick. I offer those same teachings this week.

In the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, there are two essential parts:1. Laying on of hands. The intent in the laying of hands is to comfort the sick person. It symbolizes the power of God entering the sick person.2. Anointing of the Forehead and Hands. The anointing is with the Oil of the Infirm.

Who can be anointed?

Paragraph 1514 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church reads, “The anointing of the sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly arrived.”Paragraph 1515 continues, “If a sick person who received the anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive the sacrament again. If during the same illness the person’s condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced.”

What grace is received?

Paragraph 1532 states the effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age;the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of Penance;the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of the soul; the preparation for passing over to life.

God’s blessings! Father Peter Schuster, Pastor

What is keeping you from a relationship with Jesus? February 26th is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season. Below are a couple of questions to reflect on before we begin the Lenten Season.

-What repetitive sin is keeping you from a stronger relationship with Christ? -Is there a specific struggle in your life holding you down?

When you come to Mass on Ash Wednesday, we encourage you to come with your reflections in mind as there will be something special to assist you in starting your Lenten journey.

A heartfelt Thank you to all who donated to the Giving Tree in 2019! Your generosity was outstanding, and a wonderful gift to the recipients in the Family Promise and Elder Care Ministries. If you are interested in learning more about these ministriesplease contact Luann Borst, [email protected] (Family Promise) or Mary Meine, [email protected] (Elder Care). Thank you for making a difference in people’s lives!

To the Resurrection Parish Family:

As many of you know, I have been preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage the last couple of years alongside my fiancé, Kevin. What even fewer of you know is that he is based in Dublin, Ireland. (We met when I was there for grad school just before I came to Resurrection.) Many prayerful discussions have been had on where we are going to begin our married life together come this May.

With a heavy heart, I must inform you all that Kevin and I have discerned to begin this journey in Dublin. Therefore, I will be resigning my position and leav-ing Resurrection at the end of April. We are blessed to have the support and well wishes of the Priests and Staff in coming to this decision, as well as all the parishioners who have heard the news thus far. Please know that, while I am very excited to begin my vo-cation to married life, (and finally end long distance,) it is bittersweet knowing that I am leaving behind a wonderful parish and even more wonderful people.

In nearly three years at Resurrection, I have been blessed and encouraged by yourselves in all that I have been a part of. You have helped me grow as a musician and liturgist, and I know my time here will carry me forward into whatever direction I head in next. I will miss it here very, very much.

Thank you for your prayers, support, and kindness during my time here. I have only admiration for each one of you.

Peace,--Joy.

Grades 1-5: We have faith formation classes on Monday, February 10th at 4:30 and 6:00pm. We will not have classes on President’s Day, February 17th. SIGNS of Catholic Life: On Monday, February 24th children and families will be participating in learning centers. In preparation of Lent, families will have this unique experience for children and adults to learn about some of the things that make us Catholic. If you ever wanted to know about holy water, holy oils, candles, Lenten practices, relics, icons, adoration, sacramentals, kneeling, and genuflecting, you are invited to join us and discover why we do the things we do. Centers will open 4:00-7:00pm in Fr. Zenk Hall. First Communion: This week, families will be working on chapter 3 in their Eucharist workbook. If you have not given me a photo to use on our chalice display, please e-mail me a photo of your child or bring one to office. Thank you!Virtues in Practice: Prudence is our February virtue and it means making good decisions in specific circumstances. Saint Junipero Serra was very careful about how he worked with the Native Americans. He would pray to God for prudence about how to teach people the Catholic faith. He had to decide the best way to farm, raise cattle, and build missions. St. Junipero Serra, you loved the Native Americans and were wise about how to help them. Help us to know what is best in each situation. Amen. Blessed Junipero Serra, pray for us. Amen.

Sunday School: No Sunday School, Feb 16th Open Door Grades 6-10: Summer Events: Camp Summit News: Just a few spots are open! Contact me ASAP to reserve your child’s spot at Camp Summit. Steubenville: Contact me for more information. Totus Tuus Prime Time: See the display in the Gathering Space. Our parish came together to celebrate the “Big Game” on Sunday February 2nd. It was a blessing to see the generations merge. Enjoy the pictures!
