It may look complete from the outside, but there is much going on behind the scenes before your new Main Library opens to the public. Given the intense effort required to ready the new building, we’ve delayed the Grand Opening until Saturday, August 5 – but rest assured, the Grand Opening will be a truly memorable celebration! You may wonder what it takes to ready a 220,000 square foot library building. Here are just a few of the details: • Set up nearly three miles of fixed shelving, and carefully arrange nearly 350,000 items on the those shelves. • Assemble and move more than 2,200 pieces of new furniture, from chairs, collaborative units, desks and tables to special display units. • Install hundreds of computers and other technology including two Laptop Dispensers and Holds Lockers. Seventy-eight PCs for public use will be grouped in convenient areas throughout the Library.

• Move 1,200 boxes of office supplies, desk contents and files for 80 staff workstations, and provide 16-20 hours of training for each Main Library staff member on new equipment, spaces and services. When the doors open on Saturday, August 5, the community will be welcomed into a spacious new Library with state-of-the-art technology, areas for gathering, learning and discovery, and the world-class expertise and assistance you expect. And we’ll be up and running! Regular operating hours resume on Sunday, August 6, 1:00-5:00 PM. We look forward to greeting our entire community with open arms to the new Main Library.

“A lot of our participants are professionals in transition, as well as those who are new to the job market,” said Ann Riegle-Crichton, Business Services Librarian.

“There’s so much information and so many resources available for job seekers regardless of their circumstances, but more than anything it’s helpful to bring people together to talk, network and connect.”

Job Seekers meets the first Thursday each month at the Miami Township Branch Library, and the second Monday each month at the Northwest Branch Library.

While there’s a lot of excitement about all that’s shiny and new at your Dayton Metro Library, THE DAYTON ROOM celebrates the things that are old, fragile and rare. Located on the Main Library’s second floor, this beautiful new space houses the Library’s extensive collection of local history materials.

The Dayton Room is where past and future meet,” said Jamie McQuinn, Manager of Special Collections. “Researchers,from school kids to history buffs, can dig into Dayton’s unique history here,and visitors can use new technology to preserve their own historic items.

The Library’s historical collection includes scrapbooks from the Woman Suffrage Movement in southwest Ohio, vintage photo and postcard collections, newspapers published by the Wright Brothers and documents of all sorts. A secure, climate-controlled vault safely houses the rarest and most valuable of the collection, from presidential letters to treasured first editions.

Staff in THE DAYTON ROOM can help you preserve your own family history using brand new, high-quality scanners.

Visitors can bring their personal documents to scan and digitize for safekeeping,” said McQuinn. “We have a flatbed scanner for old photos, letters and other flat documents. We also have a book scanner that safely cradles books rather than flattens them, perfect for fragile journals or scrapbooks.
