T H E G R E AT L A DY T U R N S 8 0No other ar t museum in Nor th Carolina could say it has celebrated 80 years of histor y –

because the Mint is the f i rst . Thanks to the t i re less ef for ts of founder Mar y Myers Dwel le

and her group of dedicated cit izens, The Mint Museum opened its doors on October 22,

t h i s 2016-2017 year.

In addition to being the driving force behind the founding of the museum, women provided

exemplar y leadership throughout the years as both staff and volunteer suppor ters. And

the museum devoted its anniversar y year to celebrating women ar tists – long a mainstay

of its permanent collection – with two headlining exhibit ions.

Hundreds of suppor ters gathered at Mint Museum Uptown for an 80th anniversar y

celebrat ion on Oc tober 22, 2016, and the celebrat ions and programming cont inued

throughout the year, drawing suppor t from all corners of the global community. As one

of the celebrator y videos noted: “ The Great Lady is turning 80 – and she’s just getting

warmed up.”
