We can use our knowledge of fractions to help us to tell the time.
A clock face is a full circle which is
made up of 4 quarters.

Activity: Simon says!
Imagine you are the minute hand on a clock. Ask a grown up to call out ‘Simon says…’ o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. Point your arms to where the minute hand should be.

Look at this time. The long minute hand is pointing at 3, which is the first quarter.
The short hour hand is a quarter of the way between 1 and 2 – quarter past 1.
Fluency Look at this time.
The long minute hand is pointing to the 6 which is half way around the clock. The short hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4 so it is half past 3.
Fluency Look at this time.
The long minute hand is pointing to the 9 which is quarter to the next whole hour. The short hour hand is quarter of the way to (before) the 12.
