bank- side of a river channel. A river has two banks.
channel - gap that water can flow through.
confluence - when two or more bodies or water meet together.
delta - deposit of sand or mud, usually at river mouth.
erosion - process of being slowly worn away by wind or water.
estuary - wide mouth of the river where it meets the sea.
floodplain - area of flat land either side of a river, likely to flood.
glacier - slowly moving river of ice formed by snow on mountains.
gorge - narrow valley with steep, rocky walls located between hills or mountains.
groundwater - precipitation (rain) that soaks into the ground.
levee - bank that stops a river overflowing or flooding.
meander - bend or winding curve in a river.
mouth - end of the river (where the river meets the sea).
ox-bow lake - small lake formed by a meandering river.
precipitation - rain, snow or sleet that falls to the ground.
rapids - fast-flowing and turbulent part of the course of a river.
reservoir - lake created by humans for storing water.
source - beginning of a river.
spring - groundwater that comes up to the surface.
stream - small, narrow river.
tributary - stream that joins a larger stream or river.
valley - low area of land between hills or mountains, usually with a river or stream flowing through it.
waterfall - water falling from a height, formed when a river or stream flows over a steep incline.
