    WASHINGTON STATEFOOTBALL8

    LAST SEASONNov. 29, 2013

WASHINGTON def. Washington State, 27-17SEATTLE Bishop Sankey blitzed Washington Statefor 139 of his 200 yards rushing in the second half tobecome Washingtons all-time single-season rushingleader, and the Huskies reclaimed the Apple Cup with

a 27-17 win over the Cougars on Friday afternoon. Af-ter a sluggish first half, Washington put the game onthe legs of its star running back and he responded tocap his record-setting junior season. Sankey betteredCorey Dillons record of 1,695 yards set in 1996 and willhave a chance in a bowl game to establish a mark thatwill be difficult to top. He also ran for a 7-yard touch-down in the third quarter to give the Huskies the leadfor good at 17-10, a school-record 35th rushing TD ofhis career. Keith Price started the final home game ofhis college career two weeks after suffering shoulderinjury against UCLA. Price and the Huskies offenseslumped in the first half with two turnovers - a Pricefumble and interception - leading to 10 WashingtonState points. But outside of the interception, Priceplayed well. He threw for 181 yards and an 18-yardtouchdown pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins on theHuskies first drive of the second half to pull even at

10-10. His 2-yard TD keeper with 2:08 left clinched thevictory for the Huskies. Washington (8-4, 5-4 Pac-12) fi-nally escaped the seven-win plateau that has cloudedthe tenure of coach Steve Sarkisian for the past threeseasons. Its the Huskies first eight-win season since2001 with a chance at a ninth win in a bowl game. TheHuskies also erased the bad memories of a year ago inPullman when they saw Washington State stage thebiggest rally in the history of the rivalry coming from18 points down in the fourth quarter for a 31-28 over-time win.Connor Halliday threw for 272 yards and twotouchdowns, but had two costly interceptions late inthe fourth quarter t rying to rally the Cougars. It wasjust the third time this season the Cougars failed tothrow for at least 300 yards. Down by 10 in the fourthquarter, the Cougars rallied. Halliday converted fourth-and-15 from the Washington 39 finding Dom Williamsfor 22 yards with a personal foul penalty tacked on.

Halliday and Williams then connected on a 5-yard TDwith 7:30 left to cut the deficit to 20-17. Washington gota 30-yard run from Sankey on its next possession butthe drive stalled just inside Cougars territory and theHuskies were forced to punt. Washington State tookpossession with 5:26 left at its own 13. On the secondplay of the drive Halliday threw behind Isiah Myers andwas intercepted by Greg Ducre at the Cougars 37 with5:15 left. It was Hallidays first interception in his previ-ous 152 pass attempts. Price then put the game out ofreach with his 2-yard keeper.

    2012 MEETING IN PULLMANNov. 23, 2012

WASHINGTON STATE def. Washington, 31-28 (OT)PULLMAN, Wash. Andrew Furney kicked a 27-yardfield goal on Washington States first possession ofovertime, and the Cougars overcame an 18-point defi-cit in the fourth quarter to stun rival Washington 31-28

in the Apple Cup on Friday, snapping an eight-gamelosing streak. It was the largest comeback in the 105meetings between the schools and a bright moment inan otherwise dark season on the Palouse. WashingtonState played with intensity and a chip. They especiallywanted to give injured defensive end Travis Long achance to hold the Apple Cup trophy after he missedFridays game, the first game missed in his entire col-lege career. Long limped out on crutches before thegame to be honored with the rest of the seniors. Heconcluded his last game at Washington State hold-ing the trophy in the locker room. In a rivalry knownfor unpredictability, the 2012 version will rank amongthe tops in Apple Cup lore. Washington led 28-10 af-ter Bishop Sankeys second touchdown run late inthe third quarter, but the Huskies wilted under self-inflicted turnovers and penalties coming back in favorof the Cougars. Washington (7-5, 5-4) had a chance to

win on the final play of regulation, but Travis Coons35-yard field goal attempt was wide right after a badsnap. Then on the first play of overtime, Washingtonquarterback Keith Price threw an interception that de-fensive lineman Kalafitoni Pole nearly returned for agame-ending touchdown, only to be caught at the 5.The Cougars (3-9, 1-8 Pac-12) took possession and, after picking up a first down on a throw from Jeff Tuelto Brett Bartolone, Furney kicked a 27-yard field goal, leading to a crush of crimson and gray fans storming. It was Washington States first win over its rivals since2008. The Cougars were the opposite of their trends formost of the season. They jumped ahead for the firsttime in nearly a month and led 10-7 at halftime, theirfirst lead at the break since blowing a late lead to Colo-rado in September. Then came a series of third-quartermistakes by the Cougars that led to 21 points by theHuskies. Price hit Cody Bruns on a 15-yard touch-

down and Sankeys two TD runs gave Washingtonwhat seemed an insurmountable lead. The Cougarsresponded. Carl Winston ran for three touchdownsfor Washington State, matching the Cougars entireseason total of touchdowns rushing entering Fridaysgame. His third TD with 7:26 left, combined with Tuels2-point conversion pass to Bartolone pulled the Cou-gars within 28-25. Washington was forced to puntwith 5:25 left after Price was forced to throw it awayon third down. Tuel hit Gino Simone for 18 yards, hisfirst catch of the game, to get into Washington territoryand later a 9-yard reception to get inside the Huskies30. The Cougars stalled after missing on third-and-1,but Furney connected on a 45-yard field goal to pull theCougars even at 28-28 with 1:59 left. The Huskies im-mediately marched deep into Washington States endand faced a third-and-1 at the Cougars 15 when theywere flagged for the 18th time for a false start, tying

the school record for most penalties in a game. San-key was stopped short on third down and Washingtoncoach Steve Sarkisian called timeout with 5 secondsleft and sent Coons to win it. But the snap was low,the timing was off and Coons kick never had a chance. With it went the Huskies shot at their first eight-winseason since 2001. Tuel finished 33 of 53 for 350 yardsand two interceptions. Price was 20 of 34 for 194 yardsand two touchdowns, but also committed two costlyturnovers. He had a fumble in the fourth quarter thatled to Winstons third TD run. The 18-point fourth-quar-ter rally was the largest overcome by a WashingtonState team since 1985.
