Council Member Elizabeth S. Crowley said, “GeorgeGibbons was adored and respected in Maspeth. Thecommunity has shown an outpouring of support indonating toward a reward that will hopefully bringsome leads to the NYPD and some peace of mind to theGibbons family by capturing the person who committedthis horrendous crime.”

Rep. Joe Crowley said, “George Gibbons representedthe very best of our community and I join all of Queens inmourning the loss of a great family man, a great friend, and a great neighbor. While nothing will bring Georgeback, his family and friends deserve answers and closure.

Hopefully today’s event will bring much-needed attention to this case andencourage people who have information about Mr. Rodriguez to contact theauthorities. I also want to thank Maspeth Federal Savings Bank and the otherlocal businesses for offering this reward. Their generosity demonstrates justhow much our community can do when we come together.”Bernadette Gibbons, sister of the late George Gibbons, said, “Our family feels lost, empty, and numb. This suspect has selfishly robbed our family and our commu-nity of our brother George. Please assist us in finding this coward.”

before the month is out. You have taught me how important compliance with mymedication is, but the pharmacy won’t refill my prescription before the 30 daylimit...What can I do?

Well, great news for New Yorkers! On October 20, 2011 Governor Cuomo signedinto law the NYS Ophthalmological Society’s-initiated bill requiring insurance com-panies to refill prescription eye drops prior to an insurance company 30-day supplylimit. The law is in effect as of October 20, 2011. Thanks to the efforts of Senator Salandand former Assemblyman Bing who sponsored this bill.

It is just so important not to forget to take those eye drops. The pressure fluctuationsin the eye should be minimized as much as possible. Swings in pressure can be very harmfulto the optic nerve, which translates to loss of vision. I educate my patients as to theimportance of compliance to preserve and help prevent future visual loss from glaucoma.

VERIZONDear Editor,

I just read the latestWoodside Herald and I thankJimmy Van Bramer for tak-ing a stand against Verizon’spoor repair service! I am aVerizon employee and a chiefshop steward of the Commu-nication Workers of America

(CWA), the union that repre-sents Verizon employees. Here is an excerpt of what myunion wrote about Verizon,“The New York State PublicService Commission ischarged by law to fight forNew York’s consumers.º But

in 2005, they stopped issuingfines when Verizon failed tomake repairs on time...By late2010, Verizon was fixing just1.2% of New Yorkers’phones within 24 hours.ºThat’s 78.8% lower than the80% standard that Verizon is– on paper – required to fol-low.” My union is asking thepublic to contact New YorkAttorney GeneralSchneiderman to investigateVerizon. Sunnyside Church Silently Goes Hollywoodby Rob MacKay

The Hunchback of NotreDame never sounded so good.To celebrate Halloween, theSunnyside Reformed Church pre-sented the 1923 silent movie onOct. 31. But while the movieflickered on a big screen at thealtar, local experimental fusiongroup Zaha played rhythms thatgrooved with the acting. Witheverything from wind to string topercussion instruments, Zaha, which is led by church musicdirector Evan Mazunik, created aunique atmosphere that kept thecrowd mystified.

A freak Nor’easter on October 29th with gusting winds left Queens residents with downed trees and wires, crushed cars and a messy start to the Halloween weekend. On Sunday morning, NY’ers woke to the remnantsof snow on their pumpkins and started their Halloween Monday with heavy frost on their cars.Winter doesn’t actually start until December 22nd, leading many to believe this is going to be a harsh winter.Photos Below by Sue Baldock
