The addition of PS 339 and the introduction of PS 11’s annex will help ensure that the children of Woodside are given two state-the- art facilities where they will be provided a quality education for generations to come.” PS 339, located at 39-07 57th Street in Woodside, will have the capacity to serve over 470 students from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The school is scheduled to open in September 2015. PS 339 is also one of five new schools, which will be fully operational by 2016. Since taking office, Van Bramer has worked closely with SCA, members of Community Educa- tion Council 30 and 24, parents and local leaders to secure over 2,000 seats for the children of Western Queens. The state-of-the-art facility will be a fully air conditioned, acces- sible 5-story primary school which will consist of 22 standard class- rooms, two special education class- rooms, multiple resource rooms, a music classroom, art classroom and gymatorium. The school will also include a library, cafeteria, kitchen, general administrative office, guid- ance office, medical office and a community room. The addition of PS 339 will also help alleviate overcrowding at PS 11 in Woodside, which is currently operating over capacity. In January of this year Council Member Van Bramer announced plans to build an annex for PS 11, which will also add approximately 350 seats to students from both Sunnyside and Woodside. The an- nex is scheduled to open by 2016. “The groundbreaking of PS 339 is welcome news for the families of the Woodside community,” said Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx). “Our children need and deserve a learning environment where they can thrive and the addi- tion of this new elementary school will help to ease the overcrowding that exists at many of the neighbor- ing schools. As Cold Weather Closes In, Remember HEAPBefore the thermometer drops

and this mild autumn we’re enjoy-ing gives way to winter, NYSSenator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr.(D-Howard Beach) would like toremind New Yorkers that the StateOffice of Temporary and Disabil-ity Assistance (OTDA) announcedyesterday that New York’s HomeEnergy Assistance Program(HEAP) began accepting applica-tions for regular benefits on Mon-day, November 18. HEAP, over-seen by OTDA, provides assis-tance to help low-income and eld-erly New Yorkers keep theirhomes warm in the winter months.HEAP is a federally funded pro-gram to help eligible householdsmeet their home energy needs.

“As in past years, applicationsare available in my district officein Middle Village now—the lasthalf of November. I urge myconstituents to take advantage ofthis program now that the heatingseason has begun. As energy costsare on the rise and the economycontinues to struggle, residents

must be informed of helpful pro-grams like HEAP to help themthrough the difficult wintermonths,” said Senator Addabbo.“Heating your home is vital toyour health and well-being. A littlehelp can go a long way for strug-gling families, seniors on fixedincomes and people out of work,in paying energy costs to keep theheat on in their homes.”

Anyone who had applied forHEAP in past years will receivea new application automaticallyin the mail. This winter, the maxi-mum regular HEAP benefit ahousehold can receive is $650.Eligibility for HEAP is based onincome and household size. Forexample, a family of four canhave a household income of$50,184 a year and still qualifyfor a HEAP benefit.

Eligible households can re-ceive one regular HEAP benefitper season, but may also be eli-gible for an emergency HEAPbenefit if they are in danger ofrunning out of fuel or having

their utility service shut off. Ap-plications for emergency HEAPbenefits will be accepted begin-ning January 2, 2014. Appli-cants are encouraged to applyearly, as HEAP benefits areawarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications forregular benefits will be acceptedthrough at least mid-March 2014.

The Senator continued, “Ifyou can’t afford to pay your homeenergy bill, you can face safetyrisks. Some people resort to un-safe methods to keep their homeswarm, including the use of stovesand improperly vented portableheaters, which are fire and car-bon monoxide hazards. We donot want to see people on thestreets because they can’t affordto pay their heating bills.”

New York residents can checkif they may be eligible for HEAP,and numerous other benefits, byanswering a few questions onlineat myBenefits.ny.gov. Last win-ter, 1.4 million households re-ceived HEAP benefits.

I applaud the efforts of the cityofficials and all the members of ourcommunity who worked so hard tomake this new school a reality.”

“Nothing is more important than

ensuring our children have everyopportunity to succeed, and thatstarts with our schools. As our com-munity continues to grow, we mustfight to guarantee our kids receivethe educational resources they need.I am pleased to see this giant stepforward in the fight against schoolovercrowding, and I am eager tocontinue the work that remains tobe done,” said Senator Gianaris.

“We are thrilled to break

ground on a new school inWoodside that will serve Pre-Kin-dergarten to fifth grade students,”said Deputy Chancellor of Op-erations Kathleen Grimm.

“I am proud of the work thatour team has done to provide new,state-of-the-art school buildingsthroughout the city, and excitedabout creating this new school,”School Construction AuthorityPresident Lorraine Grillo said.
