Lifeguard To The Rescueby Rob MacKay

Christos Kambouris, a life-guard at the St. Sebastian ParishCenter, recently pulled a drown-ing man to safety. It was just an-other day at the office forKambouris, who has worked atthe Woodside pool for over a de-cade. But a man who doesn’t speakEnglish (and whose name was notrevealed) started screaming andsplashing about. Kambouris (right)jumped from his perch, swamabout three-quarters of the pooland pulled the man to the shallowend. After the heroic feat,Kambouris was humble, but proudof his accomplishment. “I’m notthe best with words, but it was agreat feeling,” he said.

Step Forward in BringingNew Jobs to Queens

DOT Announces Delta,US Airways Tentative

Approval of Airline SlotExchange

Congressman Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) praised theDepartment of Transportation’s(DOT) decision to grant tentativeapproval of the slot exchangeagreement between Delta Airlinesand US Airways. This agreementpaves the way for Delta to moveforward with its $117 millionplanned investment to build a newterminal at LaGuardia Airport, generating thousands of new jobsin Queens and increasing economicactivity in and around the airport.

“The announcement brings us

one step closer to bringing thou-sands of new jobs to Queens andboosting economic activity aroundLaGuardia Airport,” said Con-gressman Crowley. “With oureconomy on the mend, Delta’s planto invest in Queens is exactly thekind of private sector initiative weneed to keep our community mov-ing forward. I am pleased that theDepartment of Transportation is-sued tentative approval of theagreement and I urge the Depart-ment of Justice to do the same.”

In May, Delta Airlines andUS Airways reached an agree-ment to transfer takeoff and land-ing slots between LaGuardia andWashington Reagan NationalAirports. Under the agreement,

Delta would operate an additional116-132 slots at LaGuardia Air-port, and would give up some ofits slots at Washington ReaganNational Airport in Washington,D.C. Subsequently; Delta wouldbegin a multimillion-dollar con-struction program at LaGuardiato connect the existing Delta andUS Airways terminals. An esti-mated 6,000 new jobs would becreated as a result of this agree-ment, including construction, air-port operational and tourism-re-lated jobs. Additionally, Deltawould phase out use of older, loud turbo-prop planes for qui-eter jets – resulting in less airnoise polluting the communitiesaround the airport.

“We are confident that studies on the effects of the toxins at ground zero -researchthat, under the Zadroga Act, can be funded and fully supported for the first time- willultimately provide the scientific evidence that Dr. Howard needs to make thisdetermination. Thankfully, we know that the announcement is not the last word on theinclusion of cancers in the program.

The collapse of the Trade Center towers released a cloud of poisons, includingcarcinogens, throughout lower Manhattan and we fully expect that cancers will becovered under our legislation.”

The Zadroga law provides health care for those injured or exposed to toxinsreleased by the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, and reopens theSeptember 11 Victim Compensation Fund to provide economic relief to thoseharmed by the attacks.

Veterans, spouses, friends, and children of all ages had a fun filled day at the DanielsPost’s annual family day cookout on Saturday July 23rd. The children played in the watersprinkler and enjoyed ice pops, soda, and watermelon while veterans prepared clams, steak, hamburgers, hot dogs, and other delectables like penne ala vodka courtesy of PostTrustee Mike Smith. The oppressive July heat couldn’t deter grill masters WilfredoReynaud and George Nieves from their duty. Past Commander Jerry Sisco and Joe Kleinprovided refreshments and served raw clams. Later on in the day, Tony Jeffcoatprovided entertainment when he led the other children in a water grenade assault on hisdad Post Commander Marvin R. Jeffcoat. Family bonds are strong and important at theDaniels Post and we invite all the veterans and their families residing in Sunnyside andWoodside to join the fun at next year’s Daniels Post Family Day Cookout.
