as well as prohibit drop-side cribs at motels, hotels and childcare facilities. Despitethese regulations, Craigslist continues to display listings for dangerous drop-side cribswithout any warnings for parents and consumers that the furniture is illegal.

“A parent has the right to feel safe when they purchase something as essential as acrib, and they should be able to trust that the site they use for this purchase does not allowor encourage illegal items to be sold. It is unacceptable that Craigslist is willing to allowthese dangerous products to be sold without making an effort either to prevent thelisting and sale, or to inform consumers that the product they are purchasing is illegal,”wrote Crowley in a letter to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster.

Drop-side cribs have been responsible for at least 32 infant and toddler deaths since2001, including that of a 9-month-old in the Bronx. In May 2010, Rep. Crowley andSenator Gillibrand introduced legislation to ban all drop-side cribs, including the useof such cribs in childcare centers and hotels. This ban was incorporated in the CPSC’sfinal crib safety rule.

those who rely on over-the-counter medica-tion to stay healthy by improving the en-forcement against the sale of expired over-the-counter medications and keeping themaway from consumers,” said CouncilSpeaker Christine C. Quinn. “Over-the-counter medication is not guaranteed beyondits expiration date, and may have an adverseeffect on those who unknowingly take it.”

“This legislation will help prevent thedistribution and flow of expired medica-tions,” said Council Member Ruben Wills.“The sale of expired over-the-counter medi-cations has serious health implications. Thepotency of medication decreases over timeand using medication after its expirationcreates a greater likelihood that a personwill take more in order to increase its effec-tiveness. It is the responsibility of anyonewho is selling over-the-counter medicationsto put the health and safety of consumersahead of profits and sales.”

“No person would walk into a store withthe expectation that the medicine they in-tend to purchase may be expired — and yetthe sale of expired medications is takingplace in our city today,” said Council Mem-ber Dan Garodnick. “For reasons of bothhealth and fairness to a consumer, this prac-tice should not be allowed to continue.ºIntro 541 will help to ensure that it won’t.”

What They’re Teaching In School

PET PROPOSALSDid you realize that 6 out of 10 U.S. households have pets? That

means that those without critter companions are in the minority, butif you’re a pet owner selling your home, you shouldn’t ignore theperceptions of those families that don’t include cats or dogs.

Odors are the biggest issue. This isn’t to say that your housekeep-ing is remiss, but remember that some buyers who visit your home mayexperience allergies or be particularly sensitive to pet dander or odors.Just vacuum the floors and furniture frequently and use an air sanitizer.

During the early stages of your listing, you’ll likely experiencemore frequent showings and visits by buyers. This is a particularlygood time to make arrangements to board your pet, or seek out a good“doggie day care” center for quick visits during showings. This maybe safer and less stressful for your pet than a constant parade ofstrangers in your home, and may put buyers more at ease as well.

In any case, be sure to pick up toys, bowls, and bedding in advanceof a showing, just as you would tidy up the children’s things and otherrooms throughout the house before buyers visit.

Brush Up on YourInvestment Education

our school system; since I cur-rently don’t have a child attendingpublic school in NYC, I shall nottake a pro or con issue regardingSex Education. But I think parentswho object to teaching sex to theirchildren as young as 12-years old, should have the opportunity to optfrom the program. I wonder if sexed will reduce teen pregnancyamong young girls in our schoolsystem? I don’t think so. After all,our society has been exposing ouryoung children to sex and violencebefore they even started school!

At this time, I would like totake this opportunity and urge par-ents who may read this Letter tothe Editor, to get involved in theeducation of your children in ourpublic school system in NYC. Af-ter all, without your active partici-pation, the future of our childrenwill result in more dropouts andout-of-control school system introuble, which will harm their fu-ture as adults in the 21st-century.

Very truly yours,Michael Matthews

Dear Editor,So, now the New York City

Board of Education has mandatedthe teaching about Sex Educationcurriculum to children from thesixth grade level (age 12) as ofSeptember 2011. I wonder why thenew school chancellor has not takenthe time to consult with the parentswhose children attend the publicschool in New York City, aboutthis matter in question?

Indeed, before implementingthis new curriculum in our publicschool system in NYC, parents andteachers should have the opportu-nity to examine the pros and consabout teaching sex ed courses toour children. I wonder why theschool chancellor did not do his

homework regarding this contro-versial issue?

It seems to me that parents andteachers don’t count when thingsaffect the students in our educa-tional system in NYC! In myhumble opinion, parents and teach-ers should have a say when it comesto educating our kids attending theschool system in NYC. Please keepin mind that a large percentage ofour children are falling behind theirgrade levels in reading, writing, math, history, geography and sci-ence. The High School dropoutrates in NYC is at all time high!Any one that tells you it is not so,he/she are not telling you the truth!

Regarding Sex Education in

You don’t need to have youngchildren to be keenly aware thatwe’ve reached that “back-to-school” time of year. Whetheryou’re shopping for school sup-plies or not, you may want to takea cue from this season to thinkabout getting a little more educa-tion yourself — specifically, in-vestment education.

Many people find the lan-guage of investing to be confus-ing, but with a little effort, youcan learn important concepts andprinciples. And the more youknow about investing, the betteroff you’ll be because, in the in-vestment world as in other areasof life, knowledge is power.

So take just a few minutes toread more on these basic invest-ment concepts:

Growth — You purchasesome types of investments withthe hope that their value will riseover time. Of course, over theshort term, the prices of growth-oriented investments can and willfluctuate, sometimes substan-tially, and the preservation of yourprincipal is not guaranteed.

Income — When you invest

in income-oriented or fixed-in-come vehicles, you receive incomein the form of interest payments. The market value of fixed-incomeinvestments can also fluctuate, butif you hold them until maturity, you can generally expect to re-ceive the original principal value.

Investment risk — Whenmost people talk about invest-ment risk, they are usually refer-ring to the possibility of losingmoney — and that is indeed anever-present risk. But all invest-ments carry some type of risk. When you invest in fixed-incomeinvestments, for example, youmay incur interest rate risk — therisk that the value of your invest-ment will drop if interest ratesrise. Or you may encounter pur-chasing power risk — the riskthat your rate of return may notkeep up with inflation.

Risk tolerance — Generallyspeaking, your risk tolerance re-fers to what type of investor youare. If you’re an aggressive in-vestor, you may be willing toaccept greater risk in exchangefor potentially higher returns, whereas if you’re a conservative

investor, you’ll take lower re-turns if you can receive greaterpreservation of principal.

Time horizon — Your in-vestment strategy will be par-tially based on your time horizon— the number of years in whichyou plan to invest. Your timehorizon will likely stretch intoyour retirement years.

Diversification — Diversifi-cation is an important factor ininvestment success. By spread-ing your investment dollarsamong an array of investmentvehicles, you can help reduce theimpact of volatility on your port-folio, although diversification, byitself, can’t guarantee a profit orprotect against loss.

While far from exhaustive, this list of investment terms canhelp you gain a clearer under-standing of the “nuts and bolts”of investing — and perhaps en-courage you to further your in-vestment “education.”This article was written by EdwardJones for use by your local EdwardJones Financial Advisor VincentRenda, located at 47-01 QueensBlvd. Suite 203 Sunnyside NY 11104.Phone him at 718-361-1306.
