When I first moved to Miami, Lincoln Road was and still is one of the hottest places to see and be seen, and even though I lived all the way in Miramar – I know, I know… what was I thinking?! – I found myself regularly doing laps up and down the Road with my friends on a daily basis. The constant rotation of beautiful fashionistas and bohemians working the Road as if it were their very

own personal runway show just mesmerized me. With all of the fantastic restaurants and boutiques on Lincoln Road, there was only one place my friends and I loved to sit back, enjoy the people watching, and, of course, grab a few happy hour cocktails.

At the time, Score’s happy hour was well known for one ma-jor thing – FROZEN COSMOS! For $5 you could get a little piece of heaven in a cup. Was it vodka? Was it rum? Was it tequila? Honestly, we never knew! All I do know though, is that about two frozen cosmos in, you were well on your way to a wild night – if you made it that far!

Lucky for me, I was only 21 at the time and had the energy of an energizer bunny, so after a few hours of frozen cosmos, I would somehow make my way inside for a wild night of music, dancing, and some of the hottest guys I had ever seen in my life.

It has now been about seven years, and Score continues to serve up a mean frozen cosmo, but they’ve also grown to include so much more.

Thirteen years after opening their doors, Score has still man-aged to stay at the top of its game when it comes to being South Beach’s only large gay dance club. Over the years, while other gay dance clubs were closing their doors, Score has been able to not only thrive, but also grow to a point that they have actually had to partner with other major dance clubs in Miami to host some of their bigger events.

During Miami Beach Gay Pride 2010, they hosted the first Urge event at Dolce. The event was such a success; Score has continued to produce events during major holi-day weekends. In fact, just this past Independence Day Weekend the boys from Score produced and hosted the hottest party of the holiday weekend at Dream Nightclub. Hundreds of guys filled the club to listen to the beats of DJ Abel. It was certainly a success!

According to Score general manager, Luis Morera, Score and its big production events have been successful because of a basic formula they discovered years ago.

“Urge is the same great concept that has helped Score last for 13 years – we offer top-notch entertainment by some of the biggest DJs in the industry at a low cover charge, along with low drink prices,” explains Luis in this week’s cover story. “In terms of production, entertainers, sound, lights, and DJs

– Urge, and Score for that matter, is definitely the best deal in town.” And I couldn’t agree more!

Next Sunday, Score will host its 13th Anniversary Party with one of the biggest anniversary soirees to date. Every year, the boys at Score seem to top themselves time and time again – pun certainly intended – and this year will be no different.

Score will reveal their latest video installation that is set to blow the minds of Score revelers while DJ Mac plays the hottest pop videos remixed to get the party moving. After DJ Mac’s set, the gorgeous and wickedly talented European pop sensation Kazaky will perform. As you will read in our cover story, these guys are absolutely amazing. This will be their Miami debut and they have promised to deliver an over the top show!

The rest of the night will be dedicated to the music and peo-ple that have helped Score stay at the top of its game, and there’s no person better than DJ Abel to ensure that is exactly what happens!

Score owner Billy Kemp and Luis have also promised me that there will be tons of other surprises to expect. I know I am very much looking forward to it!

Happy 13th anniversary Score!

I look forward to seeing you on the dance floor next Sunday!

This past weekend we celebrated our nation’s independence with spectacular fireworks around the country. I chose to stop by The Palace for a couple of drinks and met up with friends to walk across Ocean Drive to the white sands of

Miami Beach just before 9 p.m. I have lived in Miami for over a decade, but this was the first time that I ventured out to the Beach to see a magnificent fireworks extravaganza on the sand up close – the thought of crazy crowds and traffic had kept me from doing this before. It was well worth it! Getting to the Beach around 6:30 p.m. for a quick bite made it a breeze. Fourth of July has come and gone and the summer is now in full swing. That means SummerFest is back! The 4th Annual SummerFest weekend cel-ebration has grown to be a bigger and better weekend and the biggest party of the summer in Miami Beach for Wire Magazine’s readers and all our friends. Visit www.summerfestmiami.com to

check out the lineup of this year’s events starting on Friday, July 22nd and finishing up with a bang on Sunday, July 24th.

Summerfestmiami.com provides you with all the information you need to know. You can view the entire lineup of events, watch the TV ad, and purchase your tickets to the different events. This year the SummerFest 2011 pool party will be at the pools of the stunning Shore Club Hotel. Better yet, VIP guests will have the opportunity to party at the Shore Club’s private Beach House – so make sure to get your VIP tickets early, before they sell out. Many people want to enjoy the Shore Club VIP Beach House ex-perience, but space is limited for this new and unique SummerFest 2011 experience.

THE SUMMER’S BIGGEST PARTY IS HERE!

STRUCTURE CHANGE CAN’T REALLY BETTER MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

6 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com

This week and last week have probably been the busiest weeks ever for Thomas and I working on wire magazine. Why? For a couple of very good reasons: We have been working very hard on producing our second ever Pride collector’s edition of wire magazine – that we think you will really enjoy reading through. In

addition, we have also been working non-stop on the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party, which Wire magazine will host on Saturday, April 17th at the hotel Victor with Finlandia Vodka and herradura Tequila as sponsors.

It really is hard to believe that a year has already gone by since we published the first ever Pride Collector’s Edition of Wire magazine, but that is definitely the case. Pride is once again taking place in miami Beach this Saturday and we hope that all our readers in miami and Fort lauderdale will have a chance to enjoy this week’s 2010 Pride Collector’s Edition. We couldn’t have gotten here without all your support, and the support of our advertisers, sponsors, and all the members of the Wire staff. Thanks very much to everyone for helping us make this possible!

We also hope that you will be able to participate in the Pride festivities on Saturday, plus many of the ancillary

events and parties taking place before and after Saturday’s parade, Expo, and day of fabulous live entertainment. That’s why we are including a comprehensive Pride Guide that you can use as your map of what to participate in, with the days and times to be there.

We also want to extend a warm Wire invitation and welcome you to join us for the first ever official Gay Pride Pool Party at the hotel Victor, 1144 ocean Drive. We decided to put together a unique event for you during this year’s Pride, courtesy of Wire magazine, to celebrate and have fun in the company of friends. The pool party will complement the Parade, Expo, and live entertainment on the main stages of Pride, and will give everyone an opportunity for some additional fun at the poolside party taking place from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday. DJs charlmix and miik will be spinning, while everyone enjoys their 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails included with their ticket purchase.

make sure to stop by our Wire magazine booth to pick up your copy of this week’s special issue of Wire and enter our contest, but definitely stop by and visit us in person at the hotel Victor to celebrate Pride during the day with us at the pool party. We will be camping out at the Victor to bring you some additional fun in the sun. Wire also wants to welcome

our pool party VIP ticket holders. Thanks for purchasing all the VIP tickets we had available (VIP is SOLD OUT). The hotel Victor pool deck will be a great place for our VIP ticket holders to hang out from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and view the Pride Parade from above.

To join us for the pool party after the VIP Parade viewing, visit www.thepinkdollar.com/pridepp to purchase your tickets at the pre-event price, or stop by the hotel Victor on Saturday and buy your ticket at the door. You will receive 2 complimentary Finlandia vodka cocktails, plus be able to partake in an official Pride event that Wire magazine has worked very hard to put together for you. Oh, and did you hear? Some Papi underwear models will be at the pool party wearing their latest collections?

have a wonderful week, and feel free to stop us on the streets of miami, the Beaches, and Fort Lauderdale to share your thoughts and ideas with Wire magazine. We welcome your feedback and suggestions to continue providing great lifestyle content for our readers.

Miami-Dade County has gone through it. At least twice in recent years. So have countless other municipal govern-ments in Florida and around the country. It’s changing the structure of government. No, this is not a euphemism for somehow fixing what government does poorly or somehow morphing the objective of government into something civic-minded. Supporters of these often-cyclical changes might claim that basic structure change is revolutionary. But time has proven them wrong.

In this case the basic structure change to which I refer is the fundamental balance of power – familiar forms such as strong mayor system, mayor and commission system, a strong city manager system, and variations of these.

Sound arguments can and have been made on each side of the discussion about each potential form of government. Sometimes these arguments are even made by actually reasonable people. I’m not here to advocate for one form or another. Instead, I think it’s necessary to point out that a structural change is not a panacea for all that ails munici-pal governments. Legitimately in the end, in my observa-tion, it doesn’t make any difference at all.

Two recent stories prompted me to really consider this is-sue. One was that structural change was part of the re-form package that Miami-Dade County had thrust upon it. Irony abounded here, because it seems just a decade ago that voters, to the benefit of Alex Penelas, approved the County’s strong mayor system. The idea was that the struc-ture would create instant accountability. Perspectives vary

on the people who have held the position subsequently, but one thing seems clear: it didn’t work. The County has only continued to struggle and the mini-revolution in the county this past year demonstrated that the public sure isn’t pleased with elected leaders. So once again, an unhappy public turned its eye to changes to how things work sys-temically at county hall.

Secondly, in one of the more unusual separations in lo-cal government, Hollywood’s city manager, Cameron Benson, and the city agreed to something akin to an un-contested dismissal or an agreed-upon dismissal. Although Benson was generally thought well of during his nine-year tenure, he was accused of bungling the city’s challenged finances and effectively ousted. I had the opportunity to interview Benson a few times, liked him, and found him sharp and imaginative. Recent reports, though, have ac-centuated one of the issues most confounding about the empowered city manager structure. Benson, 49, is walk-ing away with a virtual fortune and impressive pension; and all of it extends from his contract and is on the up-and-up. This is rubbing people in Hollywood the wrong way given the financial condition of the city.

Benson, though, was a longtimer. The real problem with high-end city managers is that they are generally guns for hire. They come into a city, sign a huge contract, and leave two years later with a fortune and usually with the city in no different shape than on arrival. Their contracts also tend to ingratiate managers to the politicians who inked the deal. Moreover most city managers don’t have any real long-term concern or investment for the city they

manage; national media has long since documented the adventures of mighty wealthy managers skipping from town to town, contract to contract.

An additional weakness of the city manager style of gov-ernment is that managers often end up as fall guys for policy supported by the politicians. Many times the public blames the person charged with instituting crappy policy instead of the people who created it.

Personally, I have liked more city managers than I have elected officials. But does it make a difference in the virtue of a government? No. Not one bit.

See, the real problem with government at all levels, and which we’re all seeing play out on numerous stages, is the people involved in it and attracted to it. For genera-tions, elected officials were successful in their own rights, set aside self-interest for a brief period of time to really be public servants – and then returned home.

Today, “politician” is simply the single most lucrative career decision a bright young attorney with a heaping helping of narcissism can make. All the structure, all of the professionals acting as buffer between electeds and the masses can’t change that. Rooting these people out of government is the solution to most problems in the country and in our communities. But that’s a lot harder than toying with structure and thinking it will foster wholesale change. Structure is just a sad smoke screen.

WIRE COVER: UKRAINE POP SENSATION KAZAKY TO PERFORM AT SCORE 13-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

It’s lucky 13 for South Beach’s largest seven-day-a-week gay dance club, Score Nightclub, and they’ve got one hell of a party to celebrate!

When Score first opened its doors, South Beach was certainly in its big gay heyday. Thousands of gay men flocked to the multi-billion dollar sandbar to experience a night unlike any other. Incredible dance music, over-the-top performers, celebrities, debauchery, and glamour just seemed to be oozing through the streets of SoBe.

Over time though, the club kids grew up and South Beach started to lose some of its biggest nightclubs. Unable to evolve with the times, many of the large nightclubs just couldn’t keep the consistent crowds needed to support a seven-day-a-week gay dance club.

But that certainly has not been the case for Score. Since the very beginning Score has made it a point to constantly grow and evolve with the community. Their weekly line-up continually features nights and events that really do appeal to a variety of people. Their longest running week-ly party Planeta Macho is still the hottest Latin dance party in town. Thursday nights Crème and Sugar with DJ Pride is always jam-packed. Friday nights bring in the young and fabulous with DJ Mac spinning hot pop beats paired with videos during Filthy Gorgeous Fridays. Satur-days are always wild, as they pay tribute to the scene that made South Beach so famous by featuring some of the biggest DJs in the industry.

And if that were not enough, Score has even outgrown its own space and has started producing events at larger clubs in Miami. During Miami Beach Gay Pride, they took over the huge Ice Palace in Downtown, and they’ve also partnered with Dream Nightclub and Dolce to produce amazing dance events!

WIRE COVER: UKRAINE POP SENSATION KAZAKY TO PERFORM AT SCORE 13-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

To celebrate their anniversary, Score is bringing in the European sensation Kazaky. Now if you haven’t seen their videos on YouTube or Facebook, I suggest you stop by www.wireweekly.com and click on the Videos tab to see their latest hits, “In the Middle” and “Love”. Both songs have received over 10 million hits on YouTube alone!

The combination of skin, toned bodies, high fashion, dance ability, pure sexiness, and really, REALLY, high heels – yes I said heels – are what really set these guys apart. In fact, they have become so popular, they are regularly asked to open for some of the biggest fashion shows in the world, includ-ing Paris Fashion Week, Karl Lagerfeld, and DSquared, amongst many others.

Their style is so unique; Lady Gaga’s own people have reached out to them for potential partnerships!

Their performance at Score’s 13th Anniversary Party will be their first performance in the Miami, and you can bet they are going to WURK!

In the meantime, I caught up with Score owner Billy Kemp and general manager Luis Morera to get the inside scoop on everything Score.

Check out what they had to say:

It’s been an incredible year for Score. What have been some of your greatest memories from the past year?

Luis: In terms of how we’ve really grown this past year, we have really started to connect with a number of up and coming artists and featured them in full on productions. Our production value at Score has increased in a major way, and I think people recognize that.

One of the things I’ve noticed throughout the year is that you guys now produce one-off events at major clubs outside of Score. How did that happen?

Luis: We felt that Miami definitely needed more options when it comes to entertainment. Unfortunately the clientele isn’t consistent enough to keep a big venue packed every night of the week. This is why we decided to do special events during holiday weekends that take Score outside of its space and into some of the big-gest clubs in Miami. Urge is the same great concept that has helped Score last for 13 years – we offer top-notch entertainment by some of the biggest DJs in the industry at a low cover charge, along with low drink prices. In terms of production, entertainers, sound, lights, and DJs – Urge is definitely the best deal in town.

You guys have regularly partnered with local LGBT organizations within the commu-nity – Miami Beach Gay Pride being one of them. Tell me what your relationship was with Pride last year?

Luis: We put together the Saturday night sanctioned event, which we also called Urge. We also hosted a couple of fundraisers before to provide Pride with the much-needed funds nec-essary to pull off such a large event.

Why do you feel it is important to give back to the community on a scale as large as this?

Billy: We wouldn’t be here if it were not for the gay community. We give back be-cause not only is it the socially responsible thing to do, but also our customers are our friends, our allies, and our family. Giving back is just a natural part of who we are, and we really appreciate all they do for us too!

Luis: It is also really important to us to support the community that is here as well. If our community grows, more and more gay businesses will be able to open here and succeed.

In terms of community events, you guys have another really big event coming up that you are collaborating on with the National Gay and Les-bian Task Force. Can you tell me about that?

Luis: Our next big event – after our anniversary party of course – is the 4th Annual Summer-Fest dance event. Every year for the past four years, we have partnered with The Task Force and Pink Dollar Enterprises to host the largest gay dance event of SummerFest Weekend. This year, the dance event will take place on Saturday, July 23 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and we have brought in Rafael Calvente from Brazil to work the turntables. This event is

Page 14: Wire Magazine Issue #27, 2011: Score Celebrates 13th Year Anniversary with Kazaky

14 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

always packed, and we are expecting an even larger crowd this year.

Speaking of the anniversary party. This is al-ways a huge event. What can people expect this year?

Luis: This year we decided to really go back to basics. First off, it is all about the shock and awe of the entertain-ment. Thirteen years ago in South Beach, we had some of the most amazing entertainers performing here from around the world, and we wanted to bring that feel back for our anniversary, which is why we are bringing in a big, big pop/dance group from the Ukraine called Ka-zaky. All of our bartenders will be contributing to the mix by dressing up in retro-gear. Our visuals are going to be mind-blowing, but I don’t want to get into that because I want it to be a surprise.

As for music, you guys selected DJs Mac and Abel for the big night. Why those two?

Luis: Well Mac is definitely going to give you the fun, pop, 80s, rock, mixed format paired with some music videos that will get the night really pumping. DJ Abel will be bringing the 100 percent high-energy dance music that people really love.

Billy: We really wanted to give everyone a combination of Friday and Saturday nights here at Score.

How did you get connected with Kazaky?

Luis: I followed them on Facebook. I also follow a lot of fashion shows, which is where I first saw them perform. Kazaky recently opened a fashion show for DSquared and Paris Fashion Week. They’ve also opened for Karl Lagerfeld and other designers. They are really hot in Eu-rope right now, and this will be the first time they’ve per-formed in Miami. That in itself is going to be a huge hit!

The fact that these guys have really amazing bodies, are incredible dancers, and can really work these really, re-ally high heels caught my attention.

When did you decide to book them?

Luis: I was with some friends and they became the sub-ject of conversation one night. I started doing research until I ended up talking with a friend of mine in New York City, who is a big promoter there. He and I decided to work together to do a double booking, and bring them to the U.S.

Every year, you guys upgrade the space. What did you guys do this year?

Billy: This year, we decided to concentrate on two projects. First was the outside patio and remodeling the upstairs lounge area. The upstairs lounge has the only original Score bar left, which we are demolishing as we

speak. It is a sad and happy moment for me right now.

As for the happy hour, I know that has been in the works for a bit. Can you tell me what you guys are doing with your outdoor patio?

Luis: The new concept for the outdoor patio is to really play with the five senses. We began with the visuals by changing out a lot of the furniture, and we have even more coming. And to really connect the inside of Score to the outdoor patio, we added some speakers outside, so our happy hour crowd can sit on Lincoln Road, enjoy a great cocktail, and still feel like they are a part of the party inside. Our customers are definitely going to see an upgrade in our cocktails as well. We are changing our glass-ware, and we will now be offering bottle service for wine. We know that martinis are a big thing for happy hour, so we are even changing our martini glasses. Everyone should stay tuned to Wire Magazine for the date of the launch event in August.

What big events do you guys have planned for the next year?

Luis: The next big event will take place on Labor Day Weekend. We are going to do another Urge party. Halloween is always a great party. And we will continue to work with a lot of record labels to bring in their up and coming artists. Remember that Lady Gaga performed here before anyone even knew who she was!

Anything else you guys want our readers to know?

Luis: I really want our customers and the community to know how much we appreciate their consistent support of not just Score but the big events we produce outside of Score. It’s been 13 years, which is quite an accomplishment, and that wouldn’t be possible without our loyal customers. We don’t plan on going anywhere soon!

Billy: I also want to thank all of the other clubs that work with us. It is great that we have come together to create events that really help drive tourism and keep South Beach on the map as a gay dance destination. Our promoters have also been ter-rific! Of course, there’s the Wire Magazine, which has been a part of the community well before Score opened and continues to support us!

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTHGOING SOLO IN COUPLES THERAPY

CAN RELATIONSHIP THERAPY WORK WHEN ONLY ONE PARTNER PARTICI-PATES? There are many reasons why a person might seek counseling for relationship problems with-out his or her partner’s participation. For example, the relationship may be so negative that the absent partner doesn’t think it can be repaired, the absent partner may be reluctant to share personal information with anyone outside the relationship, the partner seeking counsel-ing may fear that the absent partner will interfere with a constructive counseling process, or the absent partner may be prevented from participating because of scheduling or geograph-ic obstacles. Regardless of the reason why only one partner is present with the therapist, counseling can still be worthwhile. By exploring and expressing his or her feelings and learn-ing new communication skills, one partner can have a positive impact on the relationship.

HOW CAN ONE PARTNER CHANGE A RELATIONSHIP FOR THE BETTER?

Any relationship therapist will tell you that one of the most common problems therapists see when couples come for help is poor communication skills. Many people get into trouble in their relationships because they have not developed their ability to listen and communicate. This can happen for several reasons:

- They don’t know how to communicate properly. - They don’t take the time to think through what they want to say. - They don’t take the time to anticipate what the other partner might be thinking and feeling. - They fear revealing too much of themselves, or perhaps their partner’s anger. - They don’t want to hurt their partner’s feelings.

HOW CAN PARTNERS BE MORE EMPATHIC AND ACCEPTING?

People commit to relationships because they want to spend the rest of their lives together. They have every hope of growing together and creating a relationship that makes them feel emotionally healthy. Two factors that are necessary for this to happen are empathy and ac-ceptance on the part of both partners. Empathy is the capacity to put oneself in another’s shoes and understand how they view their reality; how they feel about things. Demonstrating empathy and acceptance is critical to maintaining a strong relationship. This is what active listening sounds like:

- “Sounds like you’re upset about what happened at work.” - “You’re very annoyed by my lateness, aren’t you?” - “It makes you angry when you find the toothpaste cap left off.” - “I get the feeling you’re awfully busy right now.”

HOW CAN ACTIVE LISTENING CREATE A POSITIVE CLIMATE IN A RELATION-SHIP?

Active listening is a way of communicating that creates the important climate of empathy, acceptance, and understanding. It is a two-step response to a statement made by your part-ner. It includes reflecting back the emotion you detected in the statement, and the reason for the emotion. This is what active listening sounds like: “Sounds like you’re upset about what happened at your meeting.”

RELATIONSHIP-BUILDING SKILLS

Active listening is an effective skill for dealing with conflict. Other important relationship-building skills include asking open-ended questions, making summary statements to check understanding, and encouraging your partner to open up and elaborate by using neutral questions and phrases. Open-ended questions begin with what, why, how, do, or tell me. They get the other person to open up and elaborate on the topic. Asking these kinds of ques-tions gets the other person involved by giving him or her a chance to tell what he or she thinks or knows. They are useful when the other person is silent or reluctant to elaborate. They are useful in dealing with negative emotions (such as anger or fear), since they help encourage the other person to vent feelings. Summary statements sum up what you hear your partner saying. They enhance your partner’s self-esteem by showing that you were listening carefully.
