This third quarter 2015, the Malayan Group has celebrated many milestones that are worth remembering in this issue of the Malayan Magazine.

The First Nationwide Assurance Corporation (FNAC) celebrated its 50th Golden Anniversary on July 2015. The anniversary celebration was highlighted by giving awards to the company’s top referrors and employees who exhibited exceptional performance in the previous year. Bankers Assurance Corporation (BAC) also celebrated its 60th Year last September.

Mr. Alfonso T. Yuchengco established Bankers and Manufacturers Assurance Corporation (BMAC), which was incorporated in September 6, 1955. BMAC maintained the corporate name for 25 years and was eventually changed to Malayan Zurich Insurance Co., Inc. in 1980 resulting from a tie-up with Zurich Insurance Company of Switzerland. Today, Malayan Zurich is known as Bankers Assurance Corporation (BAC) as a result of Zurich Insurance’s exit from the Philippine market. BAC is now focused on the microinsurance sector as well as the overseas Filipino worker (OFW) market.

The First Nationwide Assurance Corporation (FNAC) was established on June 11, 1965. In 2011, FNAC obtained certification from the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) as bancassurance partner of the Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC). FNAC offers its clients a wide array of non-life insurance products covering: motorcar, fire, and personal accident among others.

Happy reading everyone!

Held at the Yuchengco Museum in RCBC Plaza, Makati City, the seminar entitled “Understanding Fine Art Insurance” was intended to raise awareness on and impart the significance of this specialty insurance product. It was conducted by Ms. Rhiannon Alban-Davies, Fine Art, Jewellery and Specie Account Executive of Willis Hong Kong, together with Mr. Terrance Yeung, Executive Director of Willis Hong Kong, and Mr. Mandy Velasquez, Head of Malayan Insurance Marine and Aviation Underwriting Department. The talk was attended by art collectors, art gallery owners, art dealers, auction houses, art students, and institutions that have works of art.

Malayan Insurance raises awareness on Fine Arts Insurance, holds special talk

“The importance of insuring fine pieces of art is that it provides protection against high risk factors as well as security for art investment,” according to Mr. Velasquez.

Malayan’s Fine Arts Insurance Policy covers “all risks” of physical loss or physical damage as opposed to the named perils covered under the standard property policy and provides insurance coverage in case of theft, vandalism, accidental damage, and natural disasters. It has low or no deductible and includes benefits like worldwide territorial scope and coverage while in transit, and pays for restoration costs and the resulting depreciation following a loss or damage.

Additional benefits of the Fine Arts Insurance include access to professional and specialist claims service, skilled restorers, and specialist knowledge on transportation and storage.

Things to know about

MOTORCARDEDUCTIBLE

What is an Insurance Deductible? An insurance deductible generally refers to the Insured’s share of the loss. The insurance company will pay all amounts in excess of the Insured’s share of the loss.

How it affects the premium? The higher the deductible (which means the higher the insured’s share of the loss), the lower the premium. Conversely, the lower the deductible, the higher the premium (due to the lower contribution from the Insured).

What is the deductible for Motorcar claim?Motorcar policy, be it Private Vehicle (PV) Policy, Commercial Vehicle (CV) Policy, Motorcyle Policy (MC) or Land Transportation Operator’s (LTO) Policy, provides that the insured must share in the loss/damage – the expenses of the repair/reinstatement of the vehicle, equal to 1% of the sum insured or a minimum of P3,000 for CV and 0.5% of the sum insured or a minimum of P2,000 for PV. For Motorcycle, deductible is 1% of sum insured, minimum of P500, and for LTO policies, deductible is 1.25% of sum insured, minimum of P4,000. This must be paid by the insured before the vehicle is released from the repair shop or by the insurance company.

Sample Computation for deductibleThe deductible for each motorcar policy type will be computed as follows:

Ex. Policy Type Vehicle Amount Deductible Deductible1) Private Vehicle (PV) P500,000 P2,500 0.5% of Sum Insured, min. of P2,0002) Special Private Vehicle (SPV) P500,000 P5,000 1.0% of Sum Insured, min. of P3,0003) Commercial Vehicle (CV) P500,000 P5,000 1.0% of Sum Insured, min. of P3,0004) Motorcycle (MC) P50,000 P500 1.0% of Sum Insured, min. of P5005) Land Transportation Operator’s (LTO) P500,000 P6,250 1.25% of Sum Insured, min. of P4,000

How to recover loss from flood-damaged cars

Flooding has become another seasonal problem motorists have to deal with every year. Flood incidents in the past few months have taken a toll on some car owners who were left with no choice but to pass through flooded areas, especially in Metro Manila.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reminded the public that floods in the metropolis cannot be avoided. In 2012, during the floods brought by the Habagat, almost 50% of roads in Metro Manila were submerged in flood waters. The situation the following year worsened as the country experienced some of the heaviest rains on record and 60% of Metro Manila was subjected to flood. Things were no different in 2014 when, according to reports, 15% of the metro’s 5,035-km road length was rendered impassable due to Tropical Storm Mario. About 25% of the Manila area suffered from floods then.

The MMDA noted that geographically, Metro Manila serves as a catch basin of water from the highlands. The government agency also noted that there are even areas in the metropolis that are below sea level including Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela. Chances are, a vehicle immersed in water more than halfway up its wheels will incur damage in its engine, electrical system and interior. However, further damage can be avoided if the owner will follow some simple steps.

Never start the car. If there is water in the engine, the oil dipstick or the air filter, attempting to start it could damage it beyond repair due to the corrosive and abrasive mixture of dirt and water and, for those who live in coastal areas, salt.

Call for or have the car towed to a mechanic to have the water cleared and the fluids changed. Brake, clutch, power steering, and coolant reservoirs should be checked for contamination. Also check the headlights, turn signals,

windows and seats, interior lights, power locks stereo and air conditioning. Anything slightly amiss could be a sign of electrical trouble.

Document everything. It helps to get pictures of the car while flooded and during a mechanic’s assessment, for insurance purposes and as proof of the damages done to the vehicle.

Call your motorcar insurance company. A comprehensive car insurance program will safeguard your vehicle against accidents from natural calamities, theft and automobile damage. It should have Acts of Nature (AON) as extended coverage, subject to acceptance guidelines by the insurance company, on damages directly caused by typhoon, flood, hurricane, and other convulsions of nature. It can also be enhanced to cover bullbars, CD Changer, spoilers, customized magwheels, and other special accessories. Malayan Insurance, a leader in the motorcar insurance industry, provides a comprehensive car insurance package with value-added features to cover your car and you during flooding.

Malayan Insurance’s motorcar insurance policyholders are also entitled to free membership to roadside assistance program called CAMILLE or Call Malayan Insurance Live Line. CAMILLE gives free emergency towing service in Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao and other key areas nationwide, seven days a week.

In addition, Malayan’s CAMILLE offers free minor roadside repairs up to P2,000, vehicle towing of up to P4,000 pesos FREE per incident and recovery of unit using a crane of up to P8,000 pesos FREE, free alternative travel and hotel accommodation arrangements, as well as emergency medical transport and hospital admission and other valuable road-related services.

It is better to avoid getting into trouble, and insuring to be sure. Stay calm, never wade your car in floods, and re-route if possible.
