Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle:Made in the Great WarFriday 26 September

Six years ago, Sam Sweeney, fiddle playerwith Bellowhead, bought a violin. The labelinside gave the date 1915 and the nameRichard S. Howard. Research revealed thatit had been made by a some-time musichall performer from Leeds called RichardSpencer Howard. When he was conscriptedto fight in World War I, his violin had beenleft unfinished in his workshop.

The pieces of the fiddle lay in a manilaenvelope for nine decades until they madetheir way into the hands of luthier, RogerClaridge. over ninety years after Richardbegan working on the fiddle it was finishedand placed in Roger’s shop.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the startof World War I, Sam has collaborated withstory-teller Hugh Lupton, fellowBellowhead band mate Paul Sartin andconcertina player Rob Harbron to create amusic/spoken word/film performancebased on this story, featuring on stage theactual fiddle made by Richard Howard.

The Kings of EnglandSaturday 7 March –Saturday 18 April 2015

"The Kings of England" is an exhibition ofpictures by South Yorkshire basedphotographer Graeme oxby. The photographsexplore the world wide cultural impact of ayoung man from Memphis who fused countrymusic and blues, shook his hips and becamethe most photographed man in history.

For most people in Britain, Elvis Presley was alegendary figure who only existed in films, ontelevision and on record. only once did he setfoot on British soil and that was in the dead ofnight en route from Germany back to the USA.

The “original” Elvis act was based on AfricanAmerican performers including Chuck Berry,Little Richard and Arthur “Big Boy” Cruddup.Thirty five years after his death, thefascination with Elvis lives on through thelegions of impersonators or “Tribute Artists”as they are now known. A worldwidephenomenon, Elvis Tribute Artists, performregularly in pubs, clubs and theatres up anddown the British Isles.
