(Family Features) This Fourth of July, after the fam-ily has enjoyed the burgers, brats and potato salad, the only thing they’ll be looking forward to more than fireworks are simple-to-make, delectable des-serts to end a perfect summer night.

It’s easy to simplify special occasion menus with cake mix and now, bakers of any skill level can eas-ily make summer celebrations even more memo-rable and delicious.

You’re sure to impress your July Fourth guests when you serve up patriotic treats that go beyond the box with surprising ingredients, such as rich cream cheese and mouth-watering fruit filling. Friends and family will find it hard to resist a second helping of treats that highlight the fresh strawberry flavor of the season. Here are two great summer recipes that take an easy and different spin on strawberries, for creative, delicious results.

Strawberry Cheesecake BarsPrep time: 15 minutes

Total time: 1 hour 15 minutesServings: 24 bars

1 package Duncan Hines Signature French Vanilla Cake Mix

1/2 cup melted butter or margarine3 eggs1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese2 1/2 cups plus 2 tablespoons confectioners’

sugar1 can (21 ounces) Comstock or Wilderness

Strawberry Pie Filling and Topping

Preheat oven to 325F. In large bowl combine cake mix, butter or margarine and 1 egg; blend well. Reserve 1/3 cup of mixture for topping.

Pat remaining mixture into bottom of well-greased 9-by-13-inch pan.

In mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy, beat in 2 eggs and 2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar. Pour over cake mixture in pan. Spread strawberry fruit filling on top and sprinkle with reserved cake mixture.

Bake 1 hour or until lightly browned. Refriger-ate until chilled; cut into bars and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar.

Sunshine Strawberry French Vanilla CakePrep time: 15 minutesTotal time: 60 minutes

Servings: 12

1 package Duncan Hines Signature French Vanilla Cake Mix

1 container Duncan Hines Creamy Home-Style Vanilla Frosting

1 can Duncan Hines, Comstock or Wilderness Strawberry Pie Filling & Topping

Preheat oven to 350F. Lightly grease two 8-inch round cake pans with nonstick cooking spray.

Prepare and bake cake according to package directions.

Cool cakes on wire rack 15 minutes. Remove cakes from pans and cool completely.

Arrange one cake on serving plate and evenly spread with 1 cup frosting, leaving sides bare. Add layer of pie filling on top of frosting. Top with second cake layer. Garnish with remaining frosting and pie filling.

Todd Junker, P.E. teacher at Christa McAuliffe Academy, works with a student during class. Christa McAuliffe was one of twelve schools to receive the Let’s Move! Active School Recognition Award.

Twelve schools received the Let’s Move! Active School Recognition Award, an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama to combat childhood obesity. Buckner, Caldwell, Christa McAuliffe, Dodge, Earhart, Franklin, Isely, Kensler, Jefferson, Pleasant Valley, Spaght and Washington received the national award for creating a school environment that provides students opportunities to move throughout the school day for at least 60 minutes a day.

“It’s great that our program has this national recognition,” said Todd Junker, P.E. teacher at Christa McAuliffe. Besides promoting physical activity in his P.E. classes, Junker also creates brain breaks for teachers to use in their classes.

As part of being named a Let’s Move! Active School, the schools will be able to receive grants and free resources that support their program.

Allen students had some help during their school’s annual Walk-a-thon. Wichita Police Officers, members from Wichita sports teams and Wichita State University athletes walked with the students. Ron Baker, Shaquille Morris and Evan Wessel

gave high-fives and posed for pictures with the students.

The Walk-a-thon incorporates the importance of being active while raising money for the school to purchase new playground equipment. This year, the school raised $3,300.

Cloud students learn about careers on wheels

Online enrollment will be available for the 2014-15 school year. All parents will be able to complete standard enrollment forms, pay for enrollment fees and school meals, and fill out free and reduced price lunch forms from a computer.

Parents are encouraged to use this service in order to streamline the enrollment process.

Online access will be available Monday, July 14.

Enrollment information is online at

www.enroll.usd259.org. Parents can find information about online enrollment, school supplies, immunizations, and other enrollment-related items.

Parents new to the Wichita Public Schools can download and print out forms before they go to their child’s school to enroll.

In-person enrollment is July 25 – July 31. The Wichita Public Schools will have consistent enrollment times at all schools to make it more convenient for parents

who enroll multiple children at different schools.

The enrollment times are:• Friday, July 25: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.• Monday, July 28: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.• Tuesday, July 29: 12 - 7 p.m.• Wednesday, July 30: 12 - 7 p.m.• Thursday, July 31: 12 - 7 p.m.

The first day of school for all students is Tuesday, August 12 with a half-day orientation for 6th and 9th grade students on August 11.

Online enrollment begins July 14

Cloud Elementary students learned about different careers that have their employees on the move.

The school’s Careers on Wheels event allowed students an up-close look at some jobs that use vehicles as part of their work.

Representatives from the Wichita Police Department, Wichita Fire Department, Cornejo Construction, Cox Communications, Animal Control, Emergency Sewer Repair, SWAT team, Wesley

Neonatal Transport and a mobile D.J. talked with students about their jobs and the education and skills they need to be successful in their job.

The students also learned about jobs they may not have considered as an option in their future.

This is the second year for Cloud to host the Careers on Wheels event.

Hailing from Wichita, Kansas, Kamerion Wimbley has taken the sports and business com-

munity by storm. Kamerion played quarterback and linebacker at North-west High School, he ultimately de-cided his size and speed were perfect for the defensive side of the ball.

Kamerion started his successful ca-reer at Florida State University, where he was considered to be one of the top defensive ends in the nation and was awarded All-ACC and All-American honors. With his speed, size and strength, it was easy to see that Ka-merion was the prototype linebacker, destined for success in the NFL.

He has since become a powerful Defensive End in the NFL, a loving family man and an extremely success-ful entrepreneur.

Growing up in Wichita, Kamerion attended Cloud Elementary, River-side Elementary, Mueller Elementary, Robinson Middle School, Coleman Middle School, and ultimately gradu-ated from Northwest High School in 2001.

Kamerion specifically remembers a few very influential role models growing up. In elementary school, Mr. Daniel Loon, was someone who be-lieved in Kamerion; in Middle School, Mr. Strange was the first person to tell Kamerion that he had the talents to

play at a collegiate level and Kamer-ion’s High School Football Coach, Jim Moore, was also extremely instru-mental in making sure Kamerion took care of everything off the field that he needed to, to make it to college.

His Father, Oliver Wimbley and uncle, Clifton Green were also ex-tremely instrumental figures to Kamerion.

Upon graduating from High School, Kamerion took his talents to Florida State University where he started all four years.

In the 2006 Draft, Kamerion was drafted in the first round to the Cleve-land Browns. He spent three years in Cleveland, before heading to the Oakland Raiders and currently plays with the Tennessee Titans.

Even though Kamerion has lived across the country, he still considers Wichita to be home, mainly because all of his closest family and friends still live there. He makes it a priority to get back there as often as possible and has even opened several busi-nesses in town, including Twice as Nice Barbershop and Wings N Things Restaurant.

While Kamerion is very proud of his career as a Football player and as an entrepreneur, he most proud of his family. He and his college sweet-heart wife, Monicha, have two beautiful

girls, Meghan (6) and Malia (2). Kamerion says the most reward-

ing part of being a dad is just spend-ing time with them, whether at home relaxing or attending school and sporting events. His favorite things to do with his daughters are playing outside, going to the park, riding bikes and walking the dogs.

Because Kamerion’s profession requires such a substantial time com-mitment, he values the time that he

spends with him family throughout the season.

During the season, he sees his family every day, but just for a limited time, so it’s really important to make those memories and cherish those moments that they do spend together.

Kamerion’s advice to other father’s would be, “Enjoy your children while they are young because these precious moments won’t last forever.”
