iCan Bike is more than just a bike-riding program. For many children with disabilities, it’s a seemingly impossible task they can typically master in less than a week’s time. Within days, many children exhibit independent behaviors for the first time ever. This achievement, in turn, creates a gateway of opportunity, helping them gain assurance and self-reliance in many other aspects of their lives.

iCan Bike, a program that teaches children and adults with disabilities to ride conventional bicycles without training wheels, is taking applications for its 2013 camp. The camp will take place July 15-19 at the Wichita Ice Center, 505 W. Maple St. Five camp sessions are scheduled to take place over five consecutive days, which can accommodate a total of 40 campers.

Independent Living Resource Center, an agency that helps people with disabilities live more independently, has hosted iCan Bike formerly known as the Lose the Training Wheels camps in Wichita since 2006.

iCan Bike uses specially-adapted bicycles, trained professionals and special training techniques to help people who haven’t been able to learn to ride. The camp also uses teams of volunteers, many of whom return each year. With 75 minutes of instruction per day for five consecutive days, more than 80 percent of campers learn to ride a conventional bicycle independently by the end of the camp.

To be eligible to enroll, participants must be at least eight years old. They must have a disability but be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. They must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Participants must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.

The cost of the camp is $125, with a limited number of scholarships available. For more information or to obtain an application, call 942-6300 extension 232; or download an application at ilrcks.org. Applications and payment must be received by June 21.

Independent Living Resource Center is a nonprofit agency that provides services and support to more than 2,000 people with disabilities each year. Services include information and referral, job readiness training, computer training, independent living skills training, peer support, medical equipment loans, payroll services for direct services workers, social and recreational activities, advocacy, and community education. Since 1984, ILRC has been empowering people with disabilities in south-central Kansas.

Changes to 2013-2014 enrollment process

News and Information from our partners at Wichita Public Schools

The Wichita Public Schools will be implementing a new student information system over the summer which will require the district to change the enrollment process this fall. During the week of enrollment, all parents are required to come to the school to obtain a new parent access code to the new system. Family Access, the current system being used, will no longer be available after June 13 and parents’ current username and password will no longer work.

Enrollment will be a different online process this fall. During this transition, only the student’s Pupil Information Form (PIF) will be available to complete online. Other forms will be available to download and complete electronically, which can be printed and delivered to the school. Computers will be set up at schools to allow parents to complete the forms online if they do not have access to a computer at home. This may cause some delays in the enrollment process.

until June 13 to make sure their current information is saved in the system. This will help with the change to the new system and make the enrollment process in the fall a little easier for parents.

July 29: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

July 30: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

July 31: 12 – 7 p.m.

August 1: 12 – 7 p.m.

The Wichita Public Schools celebrated the accomplishments of high school seniors for being some of the top scholarship recipients for 2013. The students were recognized at the May 6 BOE meeting for being the top ten scholarship recipients at their high school, for receiving $50,000 or more in scholarship earnings, for receiving a named scholarship and/or being named a Wichita State University Dean’s Scholar.

“For the past 13 years, these students have done amazing work and we are very proud of

their accomplishments,” said Bill Faflick, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. “I look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the future.”

“This doesn’t represent all of our students who have received scholarships. We are still adding up the totals,” he added.

The Board of Education recognized some of the top scholarship recipients from all comprehensive high schools and Northeast Magnet during its May 6 meeting.
