We wanted to take a few lines to say “thank you” to the businesses

and organizations that place advertising in our publication. 2013 marks the 20th Year Anniversary of Wichita Family Magazine. Christy and I have been publishing WFM for the past five years, but it’s because of founder Linda Fuqua (20 years ago) that WFM is in existence. Even since it first began (then as Wichita Kids!), WFM was focused on one thing—family. Our publication has taken on many different looks over the years and has seen three different publishers during that time, but the constant dedication to help educate, entertain, inform and inspire continues to be our goal as publisher. Christy and I have

always wanted this publication to become a solid resource for families in Wichita and the surrounding area. We’re certainly still a “work in progress,” but we’re proud of the work that we have done over the past couple of years. But we wouldn’t be where we are today without surrounding our family vision with quality businesses and organizations. Those who advertise in Wichita Family Magazine obviously believe in two things: family values and promoting their respective business/organization to the largest family readership in south-central Kansas. During these rough times, nothing is more central and important than the love we share between our loved ones. So help us say “thank you” to those who have helped

bring you Wichita Family over the years, by buying products and/or services from their businesses.

This year, you may have noticed that our publication is printed differently. The change is intentional. In this day-and-age, businesses are looking to find their niche. Like other businesses, we’re trying to solidify our niche as well. Our format change from portrait to landscape will help us deliver more for our readers and for the businesses/organizations that advertise with us. It also serves as a symbolic change as we hope to turn our magazine on its ear and listen to what our readers and our advertisers are saying to us.

In 2013, we are expanding our reach to the Reno County areas and the McPherson County area. We’re also expanding our opportunities for our readers to win some really amazing prizes and opportunities this month and beyond.

As we head into this year, join us in celebrating our 20th year! And after 20 years, please accept our deep and most sincere “thanks” to our dedicated readers and the businesses who have made this milestone possible.

Summer camps are the ideal solution for parents who are wondering just what the hell their children are going to do all Summer. Although, a few

weeks of watching television and playing with their friends is great, three months is simply too much time and after a while, boredom sets in.

And as you are likely aware, bored children are rarely much fun to be around. Summer camps are therefore perfect not only for keeping boredom at bay for the kids, but also for keeping madness at bay for the parents. Should you be considering booking a summer camp for your children, here are the key things that you should consider.

Reputation

The first thing that you should consider when choosing a summer camp is it\’s reputation. Ask around for recommendations of a great summer camp in your area. If you know enough people with children, one of them is bound to be able to point you in the right direction. Remember, a solid reputation is worth far more than a fancy brochure.

Activities

Although no summer camp will involve endless hours of television, the exact activities on offer do vary quite a bit. There are two things that you should look for when checking

out the activities on offer at each camp in your area.

Are any of the activities new for your child? Although your child is likely to have played football about a thousand times, perhaps he/she has never been on a trampoline or played roller hockey. You should choose a summer camp that will enable your child to try something new. Will your child actually learn anything? Although fun activities are certainly great for your child, you are also likely to want him/her to leave the camp with a new skill or two. For example, many summer camps include archery lessons.

Staff

How much your child enjoys the experience of attending a summer camp will depend largely upon the quality of the staff. Who are they and what experience do they have with controlling large groups of children? Have the necessary background checks been performed on all employees before they started working at the camp? These questions can all be easily answered with a quick telephone call to each camp that you are considering.

Facilities

Although, children are rarely fast to complain about a few broken chairs, you obviously don\’t want to send your child to a summer camp that\’s rundown and dirty. Therefore, you should look through each camps website and brochure and check out the photos. If in doubt, you should never be afraid to contact a summer camp to arrange a quick tour before you make a booking.

PriceFinally, the cost of summer camps can vary drastically even within a single state. It is therefore well worth your while doing a little bit of price comparison. It is also worth noting that just because a particular summer camp is more expensive, that by no means guarantees a higher quality of service. Therefore don\’t be afraid to grab a bargain if a cheap summer camp appears to meet all of your needs.

Hyde students take a trip around North America Students at Hyde International Studies and Communications Magnet visited different North American countries during the school’s North America Day. Students studied North and Central American culture and customs during the fall semester. To wrap up the event, students rotated through sessions about different North American regions or countries and learned about food, crafts, music, games, money, and holiday traditions.

Some of the student activities included learning about Native American customs, listening to steel drum music, creating mini-surf boards and panning for gold.

Most children figure out how to ride between the ages of about three

and six. Nonetheless, each and every kid is unique both mentally and physically. Use your own judgment to figure out whether your son or daughter will be mentally and physically willing to learn this particular technique. After one determines that the boy or girl is ready, plan for the joy involving development as well as understanding. Many kids may be trained this particular skill in one afternoon, whereas many kids take longer. Even more importantly bear in mind your child will need to have fun through the understanding process to be able to enjoy the technique. Without fun this skill will likely be useless as well as annoying to the boy or girl.

Getting Arranged: Obtaining the appropriate gear and bi-cycle

Being a parent or guardian, you need to supply the proper equipment for your child to learn. To operate properly and foremost safely and securely one will have to acquire;

•Specialized bicycle

•Properly fitting helmet•Additional safety guards

•Training wheels

Boys and girls bikes can be found in numerous styles, sizes, and colors. The primary element to keep in mind when scouting for a boys and girls bike is actually size. Your son or daughter should certainly stand up with each foot in contact with ground level whenever straddling the particular bike. If your kid must have an elevated floor for getting on the seat the actual bike is just too large. Making certain the ideal size is essential for controlling the bike while biking. Generally if the bicycle is just too big, your child is a bit more likely to lose control and be wounded.

Another attribute to look at is actually function. There are many different types of specialized kids bicycles that can be purchased. Pick one that suits your own child’s age group and ability. Many specialized boys and girls bikes models contain but aren’t limited to:

•Tricycles

•Bicycles with beginner wheels

•Two wheel bi-cycle

•Pewi Walking Buddy intended for small children

•Balancing bicycles that educate a child to balance with out pedals

A bicycle helmet can also be essential in order to avoid serious damage. Based on the National Injury Prevention F o u n d a t i o n , “ h e l m e t s can stop an estimated 75% of bicycle fatalities amongst small children.” Statistically, 85-88% of significant head as well as brain traumas could be avoided with the right utilization of a bicycle helmet! After your youngster is established with the right kids bi-cycle and safety gear, you should discover a great place to instruct this technique to the child. Choose a traffic free, level area which is smoothly paved and roomy. Typically non-public driveways create a superb area as well as an empty basketball court. Greg is a loving father of six children. He enjoys writing, playing the guitar, taking vacations with his family, and spending quality time at home. “If your kids are anything like mine, physical activity is just a part of their everyday life. With that being said, please be sure to take all the necessary precautions to not only keep them safe, but their teeth as well. Mouth guards can be easily fabricated by your dentist to help protect their teeth from chipping, nerve damage, and even tooth loss. We only get one set of chompers, so make it a point to be proactive and ensure a healthy smile for a lifetime.”

Doctor’s Orders

You can be romantic this Valentines Day without spending too much. All it takes is a little creativity

and forethought. The key lies in personalizing your celebration and letting your loved one know how special you feel each ordinary day that you are together.

Here are nine ideas for celebrating your love this February 14th, and throughout the year.

1. Make a memory jar. Take simple slips of paper and write a favorite memory on each one. Be specific, and try to record as much about the occasion as you can. Tuck them into a jar or wooden box, tied with a bow.

The time you spend reminiscing and recording these memories will contribute to your own romantic mood, and what your partner thinks is a plain old box of chocolates will instead be a treasured gift for years to come. Plus, you can add memories to the box for future birthday, holiday, or Valentine’s Day celebrations.

2. Build a romantic fire. Host your own indoor picnic, complete with a bottle of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries.

3. Recreate your first date together. What were you wearing? Where did you go? Do you remember what you talked about? Spend the evening reminiscing and reflecting on how

far you have come as a couple.

4. Choose a book in which you are both interested, fiction or nonfiction. Read a new chapter each night before bed. This cozy tradition will allow you to spend some quality time together and often makes for thought provoking breakfast conversations.

5. Make a tape of the songs special to your relationship. Include “your song,” songs from your wedding, songs from favorite movies. Add a personal voice dedication and leave it in his briefcase, Walkman, or car stereo.

6. Turn off the TV and play a game of Scrabble or Pictionary.

7. Write about the feelings you experienced when you first met your mate. Write about the first time you knew you were in love.

8. Frame a new, special photo of the two of you and display it in your home.

9. Have you been holding a grudge against your partner? Today, forgive it and move on. Witness how much power the act of forgiveness injects into your relationship.
