A Message From the President For many of us, the Fourth of July

Holiday, which is less than three weeks

away, marks the middle of the

summer. The next big events for most

of us will be fall and Christmas

appeals, in all their formats. My staff

and I have already outlined the appeal

schedule for the fall appeals. In fact, it

is not too early to begin planning for

the Christmas/holiday appeal.

On another subject, your AFP

membership brings expertise to you in

the form of networking with

colleagues, quality educational

programs, a resource library,

professional publications and articles—

to mention a few benefits. Be sure to

read the article by Wendy Glick about

AFP membership.

If you were not able to attend the June

17 program, “My Best ‘Take Away’

From the Sessions I attended,” you

missed a great review of the excellent

educational sessions and speakers at the

AFP International Conference and the

2014 Mid-America Conference on

Fundraising. Thank you to Mike

Wescott for hosting this session at the

Spiritual Life Center.

Our next major chapter event is

nominations for National Philanthropy

Day awards. Watch your e-mail for the

information on how to nominate

candidates in the various

categories. The NPD educational

program and awards luncheon will be

Wednesday, November 12.

A special thank you to the Greater

Wichita AFP Board for their dedicated

activities on behalf of this chapter.

AFP Membership

By Wendy Glick

In a recent article found in “Fundraising Success”,

Gayle Gifford states, “Every development person

should get themselves a circle of peers. Many of us

belong to the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

. . to know that you have other people who get it, who

understand you, who have more experience – or less,

but have different approaches – to mentor you, to be

there.” I couldn’t have said it better myself Gayle!

That is what membership in the AFP Greater Wichita

Chapter has meant to me. A circle of

professionals, better yet, a circle of friends to share the

ups and downs of my professional career with. People

who are way smarter at some things from whom I can

learn. And others who just understand the challenges I

face as a fundraising professional – especially when my

executive director doesn’t.

Whether it’s someone on your development staff or

someone you know working in the field at another

not-for-profit, now is a great time to become a member

of the Association of Fundraising Professionals Greater

Wichita Chapter. The board is creating exciting and

quality educational opportunities, exploring innovative

ways to engage old and new members alike, and adding

in a dose of fun along the way. PLUS, In honor of the

54th Anniversary, AFP will be offering a $50.00

discount to new members joining in the Professional

and Associate Member categories by June 30, 2014.

*See the attached coupon for details on how to take

advantage of this great savings and begin your

membership in AFP. And let the fundraising begin!

Looking for a new

opportunity? Or looking to fill a position? Be sure to check out the

AFP Greater Wichita Chapter job posting service.

Mentoring Available Through

Qualified AFP Mentors

Hello! My name is Sharon Miles. I’m your Mentoring

and Certification Chair this year. Would you like to

visit with a peer about your fundraising program?

Have you accepted a position that has a component

that’s new to you? Are you starting a fundraising

program from scratch and need guidance? Are you

making a career change into fundraising?

Through the AFP Chapter Mentoring Program, your

AFP chapter is excited to now offer one-on-one

assistance from seasoned mentors who are ready to

help! This can mean luncheons, meetings, phone calls

or a series of all three and can be done on a confidential

basis. If you would like some one-time help, that’s

available also. A mentor/mentee relationship typically

is for 12 months maximum. It is expected that the

mentor and mentee will confer three or more times

during the year.

There are mentors available and the team is growing.

However, if you are a seasoned professional and would

like to become a mentor, I would love to hear from you

as well. Mentors should have at least five years of

fundraising experience. Your availability and area(s)

of expertise will be matched with a professional in

need.

Whether you are new to the fundraising profession or

planning your future certification as a Certified Fund

Raising Executive (CFRE), your mentoring team can

offer professional career guidance. If you have an

interest, you can reach me at 660-0602 or

[email protected]. I’d be delighted to assist in

selecting the right mentor for you.

Warm regards,

Sharon G. Miles, CFRE
