a note from the editor...

It has already been such a fun winter! I had the opportunity to try

my hand, or . . . legs, at skiing! What a blast! It was definately something I wanted to share with my readers. Look for the story about my favorite resort The Westin on page 6.

Tis the season for resolutions! I have so many this year. Not only to lose weight, (I mean, we all have that one, right?) but to be more productive, spend more time with my family, and live like there’s no tomorrow. Keeping myself healthy will be a great way to accomplish these things. On page 22, you’ll find a great article from the American Heart Association about heart health.

Thank you as always to all of our advertisers. The Wichita Public School system continues to be a great partner of ours. We appreciate all of their dedication to our community, and truly enjoy seeing their accomplishments month by month.

Tanganyika Wildlife Park has been closed for the winter, but don’t forget that they have wonderful reception spaces. Such an awesome place to hold your special event. We look forward to their reopening this March!

On page 9, you’ll find your monthly Dr.’s Orders from Dr. Brett Bignoche of Wichita Family Dental.

Don’t forget to register for the Kids Closet consignment event! Sign up by February 28th to get your consigner fee for FREE!

And lastly, don’t forget to check our website from time to time. We have great information on our activities calendar, as well as our past issues for your reading enjoyment. Thank you to all of our readers. We hope you continue to love Wichita Family Magazine.

Sister hotels the Westin and the Wildwood host skiiers from all over the world.

From the moment you drive into the beautiful Snowmass resort, you feel as though you’re

driving onto a movie set. From gorgeous buildings, to beautifully maintained grounds, every peice if this oasis is a must see.

Upon arrival at The Westin hotel and conference center, the incredible valet staff will meet you at the front, help you unload, park your car for you, and take your bags up to your room. Trust me, pay for this service, it’s worth every penny.

Within the front lobby you’ll fine the lovely View Lounge, a delicious casual dining restaraunt where you’ll find anything from a big juicy hamburger to elk chili. The view from the lobby area is beautiful! Sit and relax while you enjoy watching the skiers fly by.

The rooms at The Westin are spectacular. The bedding is luxurious and gorgeous and there is more closet space than you could ever need on vacation. Or is there? Request a hillside view upon reservation for the best view you could imagine.

Don’t think for one moment that

this is more of an adult vacation. The Westin and Snowmass Village offer daycare for as low as 5 weeks of age! Starting as young as age 2, Snowmass offers daily care for your youngin’. While parents are out hitting the slopes, their little ones are enjoying art, snacks and even some time on the slopes themselves.

Never been skiing? No problem! The Aspen Ski School offers classes in either group form, or private lessons. I HIGHLY recomend taking a lesson. The professional instructors take you from your first time on skiis, to tackling the mogels on the hardest hills.

Our instructer Kelly spent the entire day with us, and I must say, was incredibly patient. I never felt once that she was frustrated. She seemed to have a great time as well! She even offered encouragement the following day when she passed us flying down hill all on our own. When the ski lifts close down it’s far from the end of the day. Ski into the ski check-in on the bottom floor of The Westin and head off to enjoy Après-ski. (a

french term meaning After Skiing) Relax by the fire and enjoy a drink and a dance with friends.

If you’re visiting with the family, join the fun just off the slope making smores fireside, and enjoy live acoustic music.

There are many choices for dinner just outside The Westin, or ride the “Skittle” (gondala) down to Snowmass Village for even more choices. A personal shout out must be given to the staff of Slice Italian Bistro. They personalized my order for me and seemed happy to do so. It’s rare that I receive upbeat and spectactular service like this. Even better, the food was AMAZING!

Feel free to take dip in the heated pool or hot tub before retiring for the night. The pool area is outdoor and is open until 10 pm.

Wake up early and take the family down to the Snownmass Kitchen and help yourself to the amazing buffet. Choose from cereal, fruit, pancakes or even custom made crepe’s at the crepe bar. If the buffet isn’t your thing, order from the menu.

Guest room at The Wildwood

Lobby at The Westin

Page 8: Wichita Family Magazine Jan/Feb 2014

If you’re like me, your morning isn’t complete without a cup of coffee. How about a ski in, ski out Starbucks. I’m not kidding! Grab your ski’s from the ski check-in and head over to warm up with your favorite cup of coffee.

If you’re looking for something a little more casual, The Wildwood is just across the drive. This charming hotel truly appeals to the visual senses with amazing

vintage inspired design. Bright colors and unique furniture make this hotel the perfect place for playful families. This hotel features not only fun decor, but a wondeful atmosphere.

The lobby is full of comfy couches that can be moved around to create a different set up every day. They even offer a movie nights on the gigantic TV screen.

If you desire to leave the resort, only a ten minute drive away is the wonderful town of Aspen, Colorado. Buses are available for a majority of the day to take people to and from the resort.

Wichitan’s will find the drive to Snowmass, Colorado a beautiful one. Drive straight through, or stay a night in Denver and drive out the next morning. Keep your eyes open on the drive for you are likely to run across Elk, deer and even big horn sheep. It’s truly lovely.

If skiing isn’t your thing, Snowmass hosts a wonderful experience in the summer as well! Perfect for the active family, mountain biking is one of the most popular activities to choose from on Snowmass Mountain.

Hiking, swimming, fly fishing, golf, horseback riding and jeeping tours are just the beginning.

Snowmass Mountain is actually the home of Ice Age Discovery. In October 2010, a bulldozer operator working in Snowmass Village at Ziegler Reservoir uncovered the tusk of a young female mammoth.

Over the next 10 months, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science conducted its largest-ever fossil excavation, yielding a treasure trove of well-preserved Ice Age fossils. Museum crews uncovered more than 5,000 bones

of 41 species of Ice Age animals, including mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, camels, deer, horse, and giant bison. Guests have the opportunity year round to discover the history of Snowmass at Ice Age Discovery. Located in the mall just walking distance from The Westin.

So if you’ve been thinking of taking your family on an amazing ski vacation, The Westin and The Wildwood at Snowmass, Colorado are a wonderful choice.

Thank you to The Westin and Wildwood hotels, The Aspen Ski School (Especially Kelly Beairsto for keeping me on my ski’s) and Aspen Skiing Company for the quality equipment. My family will be returning in the next few years.

Doctor’s Ordersby:

Dr. Brett Begnoche

A new year has begun and so has potentially a new you. If you have already made a resolution and are faithfully sticking to it, why not commit to one more thing? I imagine for the majority of you eating better

and exercising more is a goal that you set for yourself this year. And if health and wellness is a resolution you’re trying to be more proactive in, why not focus on your teeth? Regular dental exams and home care are crucial to the longevity of your teeth. Dentistry has come a long way in making your experience as pleasant as possible but there will never be a replacement for your teeth. Yes there are amazing things that we as dentists can do to restore your smile to its best, but your teeth are as good as it gets! This year, commit to bettering your health, teeth included.

Fourth-grade students at Colvin Elementary are treated like movie stars when their classroom video projects were shown at the Palace Theater.

Colvin video project given the Hollywood treatment

Fourth-grade students at Colvin Elementary were treated like movie stars to wrap up their class video

project. Teacher Brianna Falvey came up with the “Falvey TV” project, where students wrote, videoed, edited and acted in their

own mini-movies. The genres chosen were horror, sci-fi, action, news, and music videos.

To wrap up their project, the Palace Theater offered to allow students to watch their movies on the big screen so other students and

family members could watch them. The students were treated like movie stars for the event. Artistic Limousines gave students a ride to the theater, Sunglass Warehouse gave all students sunglasses and BlueCottom donated matching shirts for students to wear as they

walked the red carpet. The Print Source donated programs listing the teachers’ and students’ names and food was provided by Longhorn Steakhouse and Denny’s.

Black Elementary students help Ronald McDonald House

Students at Black Traditional Magnet, along with Girl Scout Troop 98, wanted to

help others in the community. The students and the Girl Scouts chose to have a community service project to collect items for the Ronald McDonald House. A Black Traditional Magnet family was using the Ronald McDonald House while one of the children was going through treatments and the students wanted to help the family and others.

For three weeks the students collected personal items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps and combs along with books, toys and snacks. The students donated nearly 300 items to help the Ronald McDonald House.

“It has been a wonderful lesson for our students to know that you can give from your heart and not always from your pocket,” said Janet Tilton, principal.

Tips for Indulging Your Taste

Buds While on a Diet

It’s hard to stick to a low-calorie diet day after day to lose weight, but new research shows you don’t have to, says Dr. Susie Rockway, a veteran

nutritional and biochemical expert in the U.S. health industry.

“Recent studies show you can lose 10 to 30 pounds in eight weeks through alternate-day fasting,” she says. “Every other day, dieters in the study ate only lunch – no breakfast or dinner – between

noon and 2 p.m. The following day, they could eat whatever they wanted. Not only did they not ‘gorge’ as expected on the feed days, most had an easier time sticking with it.”

Dieting is as much about the mind as it is about the body, and most people have a difficult time staying with any sort of very strict regimen, says Sebastien Hebbelinck, a 20-year-plus veteran of the nutraceutical industry.

In the alternate day fast studies conducted by Dr. Krista Varady of the University of Illinois at Chicago, participants on average consumed only 110 percent of their energy needs on feed days, Rockway says. Lunch on fast days was 400 to 500 calories for women and 500 to 600 calories for men.

Hebbelinck, the CEO of Apax Business Development, which produces the water-soluble fat-binding supplement Lineatabs (sold at GNC and www.lineatabs.com), offers these other suggestions for indulging your taste buds while losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight.

• Eat your bigger meals earlier in the day. Avoiding large meals at dinnertime is effective in helping to lose weight, particularly abdominal fat. In fact, another fasting study -- presented at this year’s American Diabetes Association conference – showed that dieters who ate big meals at breakfast and lunch and skipped dinner lost more weight than participants who ate six small meals a day.

• Don’t belly up to the buffet bar.

Whether it’s a cheat meal or a cheat day, throw all those studies out the window if you gorge on huge quantities of food. Eat controlled portions of healthy, nutritious foods. You can enjoy a nice lunch with a glass of wine and even a dessert, but don’t go back for seconds and don’t order the Decadent Chocolate-for-Four if you have no plans to share!

Rockway adds the following tips based on her nutritional and biochemical expertise.

• Include plenty of fiber and water (stay hydrated!). Unlike most nutrients in foods, we don’t absorb fiber. It passes through our digestive tract, and if it’s soluble fiber, it can help us feel full since it forms viscous gels. High-fiber foods include legumes, beans, avocadoes, nuts, whole fruits (versus juice), and whole-grain foods such as whole wheat spaghetti. On a cheat day, you may splurge on a higher fat hamburger or fries, which case this is the perfect time to take a fiber-rich fat-binding supplement such as Lineatabs before the meal to help prevent some of the excess fats from being absorbed. Rockway likes Lineatabs because, unlike other fat-binding supplements, it dissolves in water and is consumed as a beverage, making the fiber soluble in the stomach and immediately available to bind to fats. It then forms a viscous fiber in the small intestines to form a barrier to reduce absorption. AND you get the fluid your body needs!!

• Healthy eating: Plan meals that are higher in lean protein and lower in simple carbohydrates. This will help you avoid a sugar spike that will leave you feeling hungry soon afterward.

It also stabilizes your insulin levels, and protein foods are the most satiating. If you are satisfied after you eat, you will be less likely to snack later. Some great high-protein choices include turkey or chicken breast, pork loin chop, tuna and salmon andwhey protein shakes. Avoid foods high in simple carbs, such as syrups, soft drinks and jams.

About Dr. Susie Rockway, Ph.D., C.N.S. & Sebastien Hebbelinck:

Dr. Susie Rockway, Ph.D., C.N.S., is a veteran nutritional and biochemical expert and decades-long health industry expert. Rockway has worked for multiple companies in executive capacities, including as an executive director of product development, a director of research, and a manager for science developing health and wellness products, where she communicated nutrition and new science updates to consumers. She has also designed testing strategies for clinical efficacy studies.

Sebastien Hebbelinck is an internationally recognized business entrepreneur who has been active in the nutraceutical industry for more than two decades. He is the founder and CEO of Apax Business Development, a 21-year-old company that has experienced major success in Europe with the dietary supplement Lineatabs.

Since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed February as “American Heart Month”

to urge Americans to join the battle against cardiovascular diseases – our nation’s No. 1 killer. As a result, the American Heart Association encourages the public to use this special opportunity to focus on ways to build healthier lives, free of heart disease and stroke.

About Cardiovascular Disease:Cardiovascular disease affects one in three adults – an estimated 80.7 million Americans. It kills one American every 37 seconds, or 2,400 people every single day. In fact, cardiovascular disease claims more lives than the next four causes of death combined – cancer, respiratory disease, accidents and diabetes.

The American Heart Association has set an aggressive goal to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, while reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases

and stroke by another 20 percent – all by the year 2020.

Also, the association has defined ideal cardiovascular health, introducing an online resource: My Life Check. This resource can be found at www.heart.org/MyLifeCheck. This important tool helps individuals easily identify seven steps to achieving ideal health and notes where each person is on the spectrum. But it doesn’t stop there. It also helps them develop a plan to improve overall health.

The seven steps to ideal cardiovascular health, known as “Life’s Simple Seven”, are as follows:

1. Get Active2. Eat Better3. Manage Blood Pressure4. Control Cholesterol5. Reduce Blood Sugar6. Lose Weight7. Stop Smoking

About Heart Attacks and Strokes:It is important for the public to recognize the signs of heart

attacks and strokes. Although the following is a summary, not all of these signs occur in every attack. If an individual notices one or more of these signs, the American Heart Association encourages them to seek medical attention immediately.

Heart Attack Warning Signs:Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes.Pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms.Chest discomfort with lightheadedness, fainting, sweating, nausea or shortness of breath. Stroke Warning Signs:Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body.Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in one eye.Loss of speech, or trouble talking or understanding speech.Sudden, severe headaches with no apparent cause.Unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls,

especially along with any of the previous symptoms.

For More Information:To learn more about American Heart Month or the American Heart Association and its lifesaving mission “to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke,” please log on to www.heart.org.

About the American Heart Association:The American Heart Association is devoted to saving people from heart disease and stroke – America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. We team with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies, and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent and treat these diseases. The Dallas-based association is the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.

In a small bowl whisk eggs; set aside. In a bowl of a free standing electric mixer, add flour, sugar, salt and cardamom. Place bowl on mixer stand which has been fitted with a dough hook. Turn mixer on low speed and combine dry ingredients. Turn mixer to medium speed then add activated yeast mixture. Add half-and-half mixture, then add the whisked eggs. Mix until well combined, scraping the sides of the bowl when necessary. Dough will be slightly sticky. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead, about 2-3 minutes; adding additional flour only when needed. Lightly coat a large bowl with cooking spray and place dough into the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and keep warm until dough has doubled in size, about 2 hours. After dough has risen, place on a lightly floured surface and gently knead. Roll dough into a rectangle, about ¼-inch thick. With a pizza cutter, cut dough into small rectangles, about 1 x ½-inch pieces. Heat oil to 375°F; carefully place dough in hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 45-60 seconds. Turn beignets so both sides are golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels; dust with Vanilla Powdered Sugar while bites are still warm. Dip Vanilla Beignet Bites in Nielsen-Massey’s signature Vanilla-Lemon Raspberry Jam.
