It’s been a long uphill bat-tle for Gretchen Wilson, who turned 40 in June.

Born to a 16-year-old mother– her father left when shewas only two years old – shegrew up poor, living in aPocahontas, Ill., trailer park. She went to school onlythrough the eighth grade andbegan working as acook/bartender in the sameclub with her mother. Buther life took a turn for thebetter when she hit the stagesinging.

“By the age of 20, she wassinging in two differentbands in the area. Shemoved to Nashville in 1996and tended bar while singingon demos and in clubs forthe next seven years. Duringthis period, she became partof an informal group ofsingers and songwritersknown at the Muzik Mafiawho met once a week to tryout new material. Wilsonand John Rich, anothermember of the group (and aformer member of Lonestar)wrote “Redneck Woman,”an autobiographical song inwhich she unabashedly cele-brated her redneck, white-trash background.” (Source:Official Site – gretchenwil-son.com)

Her Grammy Award win-ning song “RedneckWoman,” debuted in 2004and topped the BillboardCountry Singles Chart fasterthan any single in 10 years, propelling her to fame.

Wilson’s long list of ac-complishments includes fourstudio albums, one compila-tion album, 15 singles, 10music videos and an autobi-ography, also called “Red-neck Woman,” published in2005. Her debut album,“Here for the Party,” made

both the country album andthe pop album charts atnumber one and numbertwo, respectively.

Wilson, who is hugely pop-ular in the United Kingdom,Australia and Canada, willheadline at the BrownCounty Fair on Saturday,Aug. 17, and will fire up theaudience with such countryfavorites as “Here for theParty,” “When I ThinkAbout Cheatin’,” “All JackedUp,” and “Work Hard, PlayHarder.” And of course,“Redneck Woman.” (“Hell,ya!”)

If Gretchen Wilson’s im-poverished upbringingformed a diamond in therough, then a Mayberry-likechildhood should not haveproduced a musical prodigylike Justin Moore. But itdid. Moore was raised in ahome with “…loving grand-parents on both sides of thefamily tree, aunts, uncles, cousins, best boyhood andlifelong friends, Sundaymeals after church…”(Source: Justin Moore offi-cial web page) And at theage of two his parents werealready noticing that hecould sing – in tune. In onlya couple of years he was thesoloist in the church choir.

So far this 29-year-old cow-boy from Poyen, Ark. hasproduced two albums(“Justin Moore” and “Out-laws Like Me”), with a third(“Off the Beaten Path”) onthe way – September 17 isthe planned release date.

His songs have hit thecharts eight times – “SmallTown USA,” “If HeavenWasn’t So Far Away,” and“Til My Last Day,” and“Backwoods.”

In 2009-10 he began tour-ing with the big kids – Trace

Adkins, Hank Williams Jr.,Lynyrd , Brad Paisley, Brooksand Dunn, Miranda Lam-bert and Darius Rucker.

Moore will follow JohnMichael Montgomery on-stage at the Brown CountyFair on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Describing his music as“Southern Country Rock,”Brantley Gilbert will bringhis style of entertainment tothe Brown County Fair onAugust 16 – a mere eightdays after performing at theout-of-control Buffalo Chip

campground in Sturgis. At the age of 28, he’s al-

ready had three of his songsrecorded by Jason Aldean:“The Best of Me,” “DirtRoad Anthem,” and “MyKinda Party,” which rock-eted to number one on thecountry charts.

To say that he is a risingstar is an understatement. His “Hell on Wheels” tourhas sold out in seven arenasacross the country includingKansas City, Mo., Lincoln,Neb. and Mankato, Minn.

The Brown CountyFair has been aroundsince the 1880’s.

What began as a smallcounty fair displaying live-stock, grains, vegetables andmachinery is now a week-long event showcasing 4-Hyouth, our communities, food, fellowship and enter-tainment.

In the 1920’s, the fair be-came known as the Tri-StateFair and included the Dako-tas and Minnesota. It ran afull week and was well knowfor its competition amongpurebred animal producers. Also, huge machinery dis-plays were a must-see andhorse and racing were fea-tured on alternate days.

The fair was a major socialand entertainment event be-fore the days of radio andtelevision.

The fair was opened up toall residents of the countyand included a large varietyof exhibit choices — live-stock, crops, poultry, flow-ers, arts and crafts andseveral home arts divisions.

The County 4-H Clubs

have become a critical partof the fair’s success and pur-pose, and the youth involvedare able to take part in a va-riety of programs. The fair is run by an all-vol-
