THE CHAMBERLAIN 8

New display at the National Museum - The Chamberlain 8 Australian Special.

Watching the Lobethal GP video at Friday night’s club meeting reminded me of a recent article that appeared in the paper of the acquisition of a Chamberlain 8 Special by the National Motor Museum. Maybe the club members that participated in this years Bay to Birdwood run saw it on display.

Here is the Newspaper article:-

"Source: Page 4, The Advertiser, September 3rd 2018, story by Miles Kemp

The Chamberlain 8 Special was unveiled at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood on Father's Day Sunday 2nd, September 2018.

With funding from the federal & state governments the museum recently bought the 1929 race car - made entirely wheels up in Australia - from a private owner in Tasmania. Unveiling the car yesterday, Education Minister John Gardner, also credited a public fund raising campaign with raising funds for the purchase.

The Chamberlain is considered the best example of handmade Australian special vehicles that dominated motorsport between 1920 and 1960, before modified production cars became the favoured vehicles at racetracks around the country.

The race car along with its revolutionary hand built 100 horsepower, 8000 RPM two-stroke engine was the brainchild of Melbourne engi-neers, brothers Bob & Bill Chamberlain. The car is hailed as a flawed yet extraordinary example of early Australian engineering and manufac-turing. Although one of the fastest race cars of the era, light and agile it proved unreliable, but the brothers went on to manufacture the highly successful Australian Chamberlain tractor.

In Australian Grand Prix of 1931, 1932 and 1933 the Chamberlain 8 was fast enough to compete with its more fancied factory rivals but not reliable enough to win.

CHAMBERLAIN 8 "BEETLE"

* 4 cylinder stepped bore, 8 piston vertically opposed, supercharged 2-stroke engine with 2 crankshafts one of which runs through the skirt of the top pistons

* 8000 RPM MAX

* Twin spark plugs per cylinder producing 64000 sparks per minute (from 8 coils) at 8000 RPM

* Front wheel drive with inboard brakes

* Four wheel independent suspension

* a space frame chassis of small diameter tubes, much of it triangulated

* an 1100cc 85+ BHP motor

* the whole car built in Australia"

If you want to know more about the Chamberlain there is an excellent article on the web.

TORRENS TO TORRENS CUTS TRAVEL TIMES

Motorists using the new Torrens to Torrens motorway could shave up to 10 minutes off their trip during peak periods. The State Government opened the motorway on 28 September, with RAA testing prior to the opening estimating the $801 million upgrade – on the stretch of South Rd between Pym St and Adams St – could shorten motorists’ morning commute south by up to 9 minutes. Drivers heading north along South Rd in peak afternoon traffic may save as much as 6 minutes thanks to the new motorway. While it’s too early to pull conclusive figures as the road has only been open for two weeks, it does appear to be easing congestion. RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said the separation of key intersections and the rail line was expected to significantly reduce delays along this important 2.5km section of the South Rd corridor. “RAA has advocated for the upgrade of this vital corridor and completion of each new section brings a non-stop corridor that much closer,” Mr Mountain said. “This section of the corridor will improve traffic conditions not just for motorists but also the freight industry. The condition of South Rd between Torrens Rd and Port Rd was so poor that it was the most nominated road in RAA’s 2013 Risky Roads survey. “Motorists will remember only too well the dangerous narrow lanes, power poles on the edge of the kerbside lanes, delays at the level crossings and the busy intersection with Port Rd,” Mr Mountain said. RAA has also welcomed the announcement that the next corridor section – between Pym St and the Superway – will commence soon, in-tending to provide an efficient link

The Gawler Veteran, Vintage & Classic Vehicle Club would like to invite you and your Club to participate in our annual Gawler to Barossa Veteran & Vintage Run sponsored by Steinborner Automotive to be held on Sunday the 7th of April 2019. The 2018 Run attracted 58 pre 1931 vehicles, including 4 motor cycles, from many different clubs. There were no traffic lights (one pedestrian crossing excepted). There was an outstanding morning tea provided on the Village Green at Lyndoch, a lot of friendly chatter, a pleasant drive, and a lot of fun and prizes. It appeared that a great day was enjoyed by all who attended. The Steinborner Trophy was won by Alby & Kaye Gray in their 1929 Buick Marquette Tourer The GVV&CVC President’s Trophy was won by Robert Smyth in his 1930 AJS Model A Saloon The two Stirrer’s Trophies were won by Don LeBusque & Peter Broster We would like to invite your club to include this run in their calendar for 2019 and encourage all Vintage and Veteran car owners to partici-pate in one of the few runs designed specifically for our oldest vehicles. If you or your Club is not involved with Pre 1931 vehicles consider organising a run to spectate along the route and join the festivities at the Greenock Oval supporting the motoring history of our state. Please find an entry flyer attached that you are welcome to distribute among your fellow enthusiasts. Page 12

General Information DRIVERLESS BUS IN SERVICE The driverless bus in Elizabeth started taking passengers today. The service will be officially launched on the 22nd and it is for an initial trial period of six months. It operates between the carpark on the opposite side of Philip Highway to the former GMH factory and the Lyell McEwin Hospital, with one stop (at bus stop 55) in between. The bus goes into the drop off area at Lyell Mc and has its own dedicated stop in the carpark next to GMH. It is currently configured for six seated passengers and six standing. There is a tech on board to answer questions and to operate the doors - which are the same type of push button doors as on the newer trams and railcars. The project is a joint venture between the City of Playford and Easy Mile, supported with a grant from the State Government. Travelling in it is seems quite ‘normal' (possibly due to the low speed at this stage) and it is programmed to stop when entering or leaving carparks. In fact it was interesting to watch it as it left the Lyell Mc car-park as it had to wait for a few cars to pass. The only thing I found different was that it is double ended and when you first see it you have to figure out which way it is going - fortunately the head/tail lights let you know. Cheers Steve McNicol

70 YEARS AGO HOLDEN 1948

Page 14

The Holden 48-215 is a mid-size sedan which was produced by the Aus-tralian automaker Holden between November 1948 and October 1953. A coupe utility derivative, coded as the 50-2106 and marketed as the Holden Coupe Utility, was produced from January 1951.

The 48-215 was the first model from General Motors in Australia to bear the Holden name.[2] In mainstream parlance, the official name of "Holden 48-215" was eschewed in favour of the shortened "Holden" designation. Following the replacement of the first Holden, the 48-215 gained the unofficial nickname of Holden FX. This designation was first used in the Drawing Office at GM-H in 1952 as an unofficial means of distinguishing between early 48-215 vehicles with front suspension using lever-action shock absorbers, and those with the new telescopic shock absorber front suspension introduced in 1953 - the term "FX" was pencilled onto a parts list for the new suspension components.[3][4] The title "FX" later came into use in used car advertisements to de-scribe models with the later suspension, first being used by Melbourne dealer Reg Smith Motors in two advertisements in the 10 February 1960 issue of The Age.[5] Use of the term "FX" gradually spread to cover all 48-215 and 50-2106 vehicles, although the term has never been used by Holden in any official manner.

The design was originally penned in the United States by Chevrolet,[6]

but was not used because it was deemed too small for the U.S. market

as it developed after the war. Instead the design became the basis of

only the 48-215 model. Its American origins are quite apparent, as it

closely resembles Chevrolets of the period that did make it to produc-

tion, particularly the Fleetline Aerosedan and the second generation

Deluxe. Development of the 48-215 began in 1944.
