CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE SUPPORTS LOCAL BUSINESSESMember for Glass House Andrew Powell MP is challenging residents to shop locally and purchase 100 percent of their Christmas needs from small businesses to help bolster sales and support local jobs in the lead up to the festive season

The countdown to Christmas has well and truly begun and local busi-nesses particularly small businesses need our support Mr Powell said

Many of the Newman Government members have a background in small business and we understand the importance of shopping locally to sup-port business and industry

When you shop local your money stays local Our small businesses in turn support the community through a multiplier e ect with one dollar spent at a local business returning ve times that amount through em-ployee wages rates and the purchase of materials and supplies

Small businesses also turn dollars received back into the communi-ty through school funding social services and contributions to local non-pro t agencies

Small business is the backbone of Queenslands four pillar economy underpinning the vital sectors of tourism agriculture mining and con-struction

The 100 Local Christmas Challenge encourages residents to do all of their Christmas shopping locally - a challenge that Mr Powell has also committed to

The bene ts of supporting local businesses and shopping locally cannot be underestimated Mr Powell said

My family and I always try to shop locally and are doing our small part to bring more jobs into our region

This challenge is about strengthening and supporting our community

Mr Powell said there are almost 412000 small businesses in Queensland accounting for 96 percent of all businesses in the state

What is looked upon as a tree that puts out a most beautiful oral strikes a fear into many people That is the common Jacaranda Tree When the purple owers lay car-pets of purple on the footpaths it is a sure sign that examinations are about to begin

Maleny is well endowered with the Jacaranda Tree One of the most spectacular views of the Jacaranda in Maleny has to be the drive on Landsborough Road coming into Maleny or in fact along in front of the Maleny Showgrounds

Annually the row of trees at both these locations dominates the en-trance to Maleny both from Lands-borough and from the west as the

trees burst into a brilliant display of purple leaves covering the ground

There are more than 50 species of the Jacaranda Mimosifolia They can grow to 30 meters in heigth

Jacarandas thrive in tropical and warm temperate climates but they can be grown in cooler areas which get light frosts but they usually donrsquot ower as well in these cooler zones and they are also slower-growing and smaller there They can live to 200 - 250 years of age

For those who are familiar with New Farm Park in Brisbane can only marvel at the beauty that they proj-ect when they all burst into bloom

This tree originated from sub-trop-ical South America and Brazil Whilst most people know about the blue-mauve coloured tree many people donrsquot realise that there are also trees that bloom with maroon and white owers as well

Jacaranda Trees is a semi-decidu-ous tree and can be grown from seedlings or plantings It is best to choose an outdoor location that receives direct sunlight and that has sandy well drained soil The Jacaranda plant does not do well in soil that remains damp To keep

the natural look of the tree and to ensure good owering it is best not to prune the tree unless it is to remove damaged or diseased branches

A couple of things to remember about the tree are that the jaca-randa is drought tolerant so it has a heavy surface root system and it has a heavy drop of owers so if you donrsquot want leaf litter then this is not the tree for you to plant It is very tolerant though to pests and diseases

This tree family rst gained popu-larity around the Grafton area in the late 1880rsquos and in the early 1900rsquos itrsquos beauty gave birth to the Grafton Jacaranda Festival

Many long termed Malenyites may remember the many paintings by local artist Ken Wenzel who spe-cialised in Australian landscape paintings which included jacaranda trees (see photo below

About the AuthorLong termed Maleny resident Grant Meyer loves photographing insects animals and native owers

Over the coming issues he will bring us some photos of some of the natural scenes that he has witnessed along with an explanation of the story surrounding the photo

The story is often as interesting if not more than the photo

The photos shown in this series of stories are taken by Grant and are available for sale from him

Fridays ndash Bar opens 400pmDinner from 600pm

One of the most popular clubs in Maleny is the Maleny Garden Club which presently has almost 200 regular members

Not only does the garden club cater for the physical task of keeping ones garden in a pristine condition the club has a long reputation for social events which includes their schedule of escorted bus tours to view other gardens

Many people may think that the Maleny Garden Club is a rather new organisation in our town but it has actually been running continuously since 1952

It was originally known as the Maleny amp District Horticultural Society In 1989 the name was changed to the Maleny Garden Club

There is some confusion from one long termed club member as to the reason for the name change He said that he cannot remember if the

name change was made because the original name appeared to be too formal for the newer members or that they could not spell ldquoHorti-culturalrdquo

One of the original members Mrs Olga Webster was a founding mem-ber With her late husband Alan and Rixon and Peg Burnett along with others the rst meeting was held in the Burnett home in Bunya Street Maleny

Today the Garden Club meets regularly with monthly general meetings being held at 930am on the last Tuesday of each month at a predetermined location for that month

In June of each year the club holds a ldquoGardening on the Edgerdquo festi-val to showcase some of the ne Maleny gardensIf you want to know more about the Club or its activities then visit their web site at httpwwwmalenygar-dencluborg

Time spent in preparation is never wasted All your ef-fort can count for very little if the surface does not provide a sound base on which the paint can adhere

Professionals fi nd that prepa-ration can take up more than the total job time for painting especially if itrsquos been a long time since the last paint job

To avoid lengthy preparation freshen up your paintwork be-fore the surface deteriorates

Checking cleaning mould and stripping

surfacesSome simple steps will ensure that you are happy with the results for years to come

Checking - Look for signs of any problems with old paint peeling fl aking cracking chalking or blistering These suggest repair work is nec-essary Loose or faulty sur-faces should be removed to create a sound smooth clean and dry base for painting

Cleaning - If your sur-face is sound with no fl aking or peeling the next step is cleaning Wash it down will

with sugar soap remember-ing to follow the directions on the pack This will remove grease smoke stains and dirt to give you a good clean surface to paint Wash walls from bottom upwards to pre-vent runs from marking the existing paintwork

Mould - To remove mould there is a quick amp effective bleach based interior cleaner that is used to treat amp remove mould amp mildew from affect-ed interior surfaces Easy to use with no harsh scrubbing making it ideal for bathrooms kitchens amp laundries killing the mould spores thus mini-mizing re-growth Leaves a crisp clean surface with a hint of fresh lemon scent in the air

Wear gloves and goggles to protect your skin and eyes

Always read the on pack instructions amp safety informa-tion before commencing the job or using the product

Shake the container before using amp spray directly onto the affected surface area

Always keep the unused portion out of reach of chil-dren

Another paint hint from Maleny Paint PlaceDonrsquot just paint over that mould

it will just come back to sting you

The Musings of an old codger

Over the past few weeks we have had time to re-consider the recent Australian budget review Whilst this might appear to be a long away from us as individuals and have little e ect think again

Every one of us has to contribute to the money spent by all levels of government that means the more spent the more you and I have to pay in taxes

The original purpose that govern-ments were established was to provide provide a social safety net through public education health and temporary income support

To be able to defend us as a na-tion and ensure our freedom and individual rights

Those simple tasks have now been expanded to include all types of other tasks that have dubious bene ts to the nation as a whole but cost lots of money which means higher taxes

It is not until you look at some of the things that are included in the budget that you realise the enormous waste that we create by sponsoring projects with very little mass bene ts for the future of Australia

It also means bloated numbers of bureaucrats It is time to get back to basics

Hendra Virus vaccine now availableOf recent times there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of Hendra virus throughout Queensland and for that matter other parts of Australia All the outbreaks have involved the infection of horses

It has been long suspected that Hendra Virus outbreaks have been caused by horses eating food contaminated with urine from the pteropid fruit bats commonly called fl ying foxes This has not been defi nitely clinically proven as yet The disease is then transmitted from horse to horse and then to humans through close contact with respiratory secretions andor blood from an infected horse

As a result of these events a large number of horses have died or been euthanised From those infected horses there have been the loss of human life Unfortunately there are currently no known treatments for Hendra virus in horses or humans

The case fatality rate in humans is 60 and in horses 75 Hendra Virus is so named as a result of the fi rst known infection occurring at racing stables in Hendra Brisbane where 13 horses became infected and the trainer Vic Rail and his stable hand both died

Humans may begin to show signs of illness within 5 - 21 days of contact with an infected horse

Whilst there is no known cure for Hendra Virus since August 3rd 2012 there is fi nally a vaccine available It is only available under an APVMA Minor Use permit but Equivac HeV vaccine will be made available to all horse owners in Queensland

The vaccination consists of two injections exactly 21 days apart For the horse to receive a vaccination it must be microchipped The vaccine must be given by an authorised vetinary surgeon Veterinary Surgeon John Hillman of District Vet Surgeons 20 Coral Street Maleny said ldquoThe danger for people is that they may not initially equate their horses illness with Hendra Virus and as a result donrsquot take suffi cient precautions when tending a sick horserdquo

He continued that the safest way to ensure not getting the virus is to ensure that all horses are vaccinated as there is a very good resistance to the virus by horses that have been vaccinated

Time spent in preparation is never wasted All your ef-fort can count for very little if the surface does not provide a sound base on which the paint can adhere

Professionals fi nd that prepa-ration can take up more than the total job time for painting especially if itrsquos been a long time since the last paint job

To avoid lengthy preparation freshen up your paintwork be-fore the surface deteriorates
