Get Creative! Primary aged children can get involved with

the extremely popular Creative Kids Competition.

The Hororata Parish Spring Fair, held annually on Labour Day, will see a return to some traditional Country Fair events this year. “We have spent time looking at what makes a Fair a great day out for all the family and then we have looked at what we can add to the Hororata Parish Spring Fair,” explained Hororata Parish Spring Fair Chairperson Lucy CooksonLucy CooksonLucy CooksonLucy Cookson. “We are bringing back the traditional children’s events like sack and egg and spoon races, along with gumboot throwing. There will be heaps of great prizes and lots of fun to be had.” The Fair features a large number of market stalls offering a range of products and produce. The Parish runs a White Elephant stall the enormity of which, fills the entire stables at the Hororata Domain. A favourite of the day is the Country Auction where people are sure to grab themselves a

bargain. “This year we have arranged for a number of young performers to provide entertainment at the event. This will not only be great for Fair visitors but also gives some people with amazing talent in our community the chance to showcase what they can do,” Lucy added. Primary aged children can demonstrate their artistic talents by entering the Creative Kids competition. With new categories each year this competition is fast growing to be a ‘must-do’ for many children. The four categories this year are: Flower Power, Cup Cake Bake/Decorate, Colouring-in and Lego Creation. “Last year we had a fabulous turn out despite being a very wet day,’ Lucy said. “The Hororata Domain is a great venue for all weathers, as there is plenty of shelter from rain or sun. Hopefully the rain stays away this year, but no matter

the weather the event will still go ahead. “The Spring Fair is the biggest fundraiser for the Hororata Parish, but more than that we see it as a day where family and friends have an enjoyable time, it is about bringing the community together. With free entry the Spring Fair provides an inexpensive day out for families in a safe and welcoming setting.”

“Apart from a brief glitch when the power went off for an hour and a half the official opening of Rolleston’s new Harvey World Travel went extremely well,” said bus iness co-owner Sue Sue Sue Sue Robinson Robinson Robinson Robinson with a smile. “We fielded numerous enquiries and the positive feedback coming in has been really heartening. People needing a travel agency’s expertise now know we can provide it, know what we’re about , how professional we are and being part of the Harvey World Travel group enables us to offer the best deals as they become available,” Sue said. “We pride ourselves on doing a good job and being local is just an added bonus for clients. easy parking, the spacious office and having someone so close, to talk to about their journey. So all in all we are thrilled,” Sue said. The only dark moment to the whole proceedings was when staff member NathanNathanNathanNathan received a phone call at 5pm on his first day, informing him his house was one of those affected by the fire near Oxford. Sadly this cut

short his career at the Rolleston Travel office, as he focuses on, and undertakes, a massive and substantial clean-up at his property. Harvey World Travel in Rolleston Square is now well and truly open for business and looks forward to assisting all of Selwyn with their travel requirements and enquiries.

The staff at VetEnt Darfield would like to invite everyone to an open day on Saturday November 28th (11am - 2pm) - it’s a chance to check out the Clinic’s fantastic new facilities. “The extension work on the Vet Clinic took longer than anticipated, but we are really happy with the result,“ said veterinarian Anita Breyholtz Anita Breyholtz Anita Breyholtz Anita Breyholtz enthusiastically. “The additions to the Clinic include a second (and much needed) consult room, a new nurse consult room, separate x-ray room, new isolation ward, a bigger cattery and new grooming facilities.” “Come along to have a look at

the new clinic and meet the team. For children (and adults!) there will be a ‘dress up your pet’ competition on the day.” Darfield VetEnt have also organised a children’s drawing/painting competition with a first prize for categories: ‘under 6 years’, ‘6-10 years’ and ‘over 10 years’. Prizes to be presented, along with the announcement of winners, on the day - as well as a display of all the entries. “We would love some colourful artwork in the new Clinic from our local, younger artists,” Anita added. Ethan Rose: Defied the weather beaten track to become the U13 South Island Secondary School MTB Champion.

Glentunnel’s champion mountain-biker Ethan Rose Ethan Rose Ethan Rose Ethan Rose competed at the South Island Secondary S c ho o l M ou n t a i n B i k e Championships in Dunedin (October 3rd-4th) and achieved outstanding results in an event which was made even more challenging than usual, due to the weather conditions. Saturday morning saw Ethan take part in the first and most important event of the weekend - the cross country. Even though the sun was shining and it was a beautiful day, the conditions were still wet, muddy and slippery from rain the day before. Ethan was competing in the U13’s age bracket and also had over thirty riders in front of him at the start line. This may have disheartened some riders in his position, but instead it motivated Ethan to push hard, right from the beginning of the race. He was third by the end of the first lap and lost a little time on the next two, but he pushed through on the last lap achieving the fastest overall lap time. Ethan’s end result was third overall, with two very fast U15’s taking the first and

second place. He was elated with these results but felt that if he had started closer to the front with the top riders, he could really have been a strong contender for the win. Sunday’s downhill race also saw impressive results, with Ethan coming first in the U13 category with a 24 second gap between his time and that of the second

placegetter. After the two days, Ethan was named overall U13’s South Island Secondary School MTB Champion 2015. Ethan will be racing in the twelve hour McLean’s race this weekend in the Moffatts Flower Company Team, along with some top riders.

SAVING MONEY ON YOUR MORTGAGE With interest rates coming down again, and if you are lucky to have a loan coming off a fixed rate, then you will be in a great posion to take advantage of re-fixing at a be>er rate and saving a nice wee chunk of your monthly mortgage payment. If you fix at that lower rate and keep your current repayment the same then bingo! You will make a good saving on your mortgage. For example: If you are dropping from say 6.5% down to 5.05% (ASB five year rate) on a $400,000 loan over twenty years, then you will be looking at reducing your monthly repayments by $323. If you keep your repayments the same as you paid on 6.50% (that extra $323 per month) then you will save $45,521 on interest and knock around three years off your mortgage! It is not so much about the rate as about the extra money you can funnel into your repayments that makes the big savings – 4 la>es a week @ $5 = $20 per week and that would save you $14,304 on that same loan. Food for thought?

Merit Award winner Aroya Bowden with the William Morris ‘Bouquet’ that won her the prize.

Last Friday evening’s opening of the annual Darfield Artweek was not only well patronised, but also much enjoyed, by those in attendance. The work of over one hundred artists was on display and this created a hanging frenzy of over 250 exhibits to be executed by organisers. While it wasn’t an award winner, this writer’s personal favourite was ‘Five Bar Gate’, by artist Michael BallardMichael BallardMichael BallardMichael Ballard. Sadly my numbers didn’t roll out in last weekend’s Lotto draw and so it won’t be hanging on my wall! It was a picture that drew the viewer into it, and made one want to know what lay at the end of the lane - I found it captivating. Being able to speak to Christchurch artists Michael and Janet Janet Janet Janet (who was the Premier Award winner) BallardBallardBallardBallard about the picture was just one of the wonderful aspects of the evening - while being able to express my appreciation for the artist’s talent, was another. The exhibition at the Darfield Recreation Centre, along with its two complementary venues (Selwyn Gallery - works by Loretta Sloan Loretta Sloan Loretta Sloan Loretta Sloan and Tatyanna Tatyanna Tatyanna Tatyanna Meharry Meharry Meharry Meharry and Darfield Library with Gandhi Gandhi Gandhi Gandhi photographs) is still open this weekend (Library not open Saturday afternoon or Sunday) for last minute viewing. Artweek works on offer covered a wide range of subject matter, mediums and styles - some were outstanding, while others this reviewer wouldn’t give house room! All goes to show that art is very definitely a matter of individual, personal taste. I could however appreciate the skill, and t a lent t ha t each ar t i s t demonstrated, along with the amount of time required to create the end result. Artweek convenor, Meg MortenMeg MortenMeg MortenMeg Morten, welcomed all those present to the opening event before introducing the Judge, Dr Rosie Rosie Rosie Rosie IbbotsonIbbotsonIbbotsonIbbotson, from Canterbury University’s Art and History Department. Rosie spoke encouragingly and added that she had very much enjoyed the huge variety of art on offer, but had found the selection of winners incredibly difficult because of the high standard of work in contention. The surprised expression on the f a c e o f l o c a l q u i l t e r extraordinaire, Aroya Bowden Aroya Bowden Aroya Bowden Aroya Bowden was a delight to see, when she was named as a merit award winner and Rosie commented

Neil Walker and Mark Moore attend to the stage footings.

Highland Dancing at the Hororata Highland Games is one of the biggest competitions in New Zealand with nearly one hundred dancers competing in over thirty different categories. The Hororata Highland Games is hosting three Canterbury West Coast Championships and one South Island Championship this year. Top level dancing deserves a top level stage to perform on and thanks to local businesses, this year they will have one. “For the past four years we have borrowed temporary stages. While they were of good quality, it is very hard to get them perfectly level and this does affect the dancers,” explained Event Manager, Cindy DriscollCindy DriscollCindy DriscollCindy Driscoll. “They were also time consuming for volunteers to install,” she added. “We are focussed on ensuring that we put on the best Scottish competitions in the country and building our own dance stage is a big step towards this.” The new stage will be seventy square metres and placed on permanent footings which have been levelled to give a quality performance area. The top of the stage is built in segments so it can be positioned when needed for the event, then removed and stored when not in use. “This project has only been made possible with the help of local businesses and volunteers. Local builder Mark Moore Mark Moore Mark Moore Mark Moore from

Graeme Reynolds and Chris Keijzer get construction underway.

Moore Builders Ltd has led the project and designed the stages. ITM Darfield and Selwyn Sawmi l l s have donated mat e r i a l s , N e i l Wa l k e r N e i l Wa l k e r N e i l Wa l k e r N e i l Wa l k e r Contracting used his machinery to help bore the sixty footing holes and AFI Systems has supported the project both with labour and financially. Funding has also been received from the Air Rescue Services Ltd,” Cindy said “We are also grateful to the Hororata Reserve Board for all the support it gives the Games. The Hororata Domain is a fabulous venue and it is great that we can do things which improve our event and make life easier for our volunteers,”

she said. “The Hororata Highland Games would not be possible without the commitment and effort of volunteers. Over two hundred volunteers work on the event, helping not just on the day, but throughout the year. Many are local, but many are not and they assist because they love the event, love what it does for the community and for the Scottish competitions.” Volunteers are always in demand (the Games take place on November 7th). A l l volunteers receive a ticket to the event, a tee shirt, lunch and an invite to the Prime Smoke ‘Thank You’ BBQ at the end of the day.

Repairs to most cemetery headstones damaged in the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes are nearing completion in Selwyn. Repairs to thirteen of the nineteen cemeteries maintained by Selwyn District Council have been completed, with work on the five remaining cemeteries needing repairs scheduled to be finished by June 2016. One cemetery - Lake Coleridge - did not suffer any earthquake damage. Many headstones (around 1100) were damaged in the magnitude 7.1 September 2010 earthquake, which was centred near Charing Cross, about 10 kilometres from Darfield. Some further damage also occurred as a result of the February 2011 Canterbury Earthquake. S i n c e t h e C an t e r b u r y earthquakes, Selwyn District Council has been working through a staged programme of cemetery repairs to fix damaged headstones in Council maintained cemeteries. Over the past year repairs to Prebbleton, Bishops Corner, Killinchy, Kirwee, Ellesmere Public and Ellesmere Catholic c emete r i es have been completed. Repair work to Brookside, Springston, Lincoln, Shands Road, Weedons, Greendale and Dunsandel cemeteries was previously completed. The cemeteries where repair work is yet to be undertaken are: South Malvern, Kimberley, Waddington, and Hororata. These repairs are planned to be complete by June next year. Work is currently underway on

headstone repairs at Kowai Pass cemetery. Most local cemeteries were established in the 1870s or early 1880s and have graves dating back to that time. “The amount of damage which occurred in cemeteries within Selwyn was quite varied and sites which suffered the most damage were repaired first,” said Selwyn District Council’s Earthquake Recovery Manager Douglas MarshallDouglas MarshallDouglas MarshallDouglas Marshall. “The cemeteries which suffered the most damage were those with many older graves containing ornate monuments like Lincoln and the sites close to the September 2010 fault line, like Greendale.” The repair technique being used to repair these headstones involves mateen rods being installed which provide a secure foundation for headstones and monuments. “The rods are extremely strong and after the repairs have been finished the headstones and monuments are actual ly stronger than a newly built headstone is required to be so they should be quite resilient in any future earthquake,” Douglas said. Damage to cemeteries was part of the wider infrastructure damage that occurred in the earthquakes as roads, bridges, water and wastewater and community buildings also needed to be fixed. The majority of infrastructure repairs in Selwyn have now been completed with all roads, bridges, water and waste water repairs finished and most community buildings fixed.

Kirwee Cemetery was damaged in the 2010/11 Earthquakes. All repairs to headstones have

now been completed.

Ellesmere and Malvern residents have made a range of suggestions through initial consultation on local area plans about how their townships could be developed in the future. Selwyn District Council is working to develop area plans for Malvern and Ellesmere and undertook consultation in July and August to gather comments from local residents on how they would like their townships to develop and what they liked about where they lived. Area plans will provide a fifteen year framework for sustainable growth and development. They will look at how townships within Ellesmere and Malvern could develop and where housing, bus inesses, open space, community fac i l i t ies and infrastructure could be located in the future. 53 submissions were received during the consultation. Seven drop in sessions took place as

part of the consultation at Leeston, Dunsandel, Springfield, Darfield and Glentunnel. Around seventy people attended these sessions. From submissions and drop in sessions residents made a wide range of suggestions for the future of local townships. Some of these suggestions included providing for more growth to occur in Doy leston and Southbridge, al lowing for business growth in Dunsandel along with improving parking in the town and improving walking and cycling options in Leeston. In Malvern towns keeping the rural character of Coalgate was mentioned as being important, and providing more medium density and large section options in Darfield and more housing options for Glentunnel were suggested. Sheffield residents wanted improved crossing points in the township and Springfield

locals suggested additional tourist information in the town. A complete list of submissions and feedback is available at www.selwyn.govt.nz/areaplans. “We would like to thank local residents who made submissions or attended the drop in sessions for their comments,” said Acting Selwyn Mayor Sarah WaltersSarah WaltersSarah WaltersSarah Walters. Sarah added that Council staff are now working on gathering additional technical information to help inform Area Plans for Ellesmere and Malvern and will look at that information as well as community feedback to develop the draft plans. Draft Area Plans for Ellesmere and Malvern are expected to be released for public consultation in late February 2016. The Area Plans will inform the upcoming District Plan review as well as identifying other projects that may be needed in Malvern and Ellesmere townships.

Canterbury Police are urging the public to be vigilant for on-line and email scams in the wake of several recent complaints relating to fraudulent behaviour. Detective Sergeant Craig FarrantCraig FarrantCraig FarrantCraig Farrant from Canterbury Police’s Fraud Squad said people of all ages and backgrounds fall victim to false promises and fake offers. “No one in the community is immune f r om be i n g a target. With the increased use of digital technology tech savvy people are increasing their risk and exposure to fraudulent on l ine t ransact ions and solicitations. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to financial exploitation by relatives and/or caregivers.” “Retirees may have spare capital for investment or travelling more a n d b o o k i n g h o l i d a y s online. They may also, because of their current situation, have started buying goods online or be new to online dating. This makes them more vulnerable to

online scams. Not all scams that target this demographic are online. Often they have cash on them and as they are more likely to be home during the day could become the victim of fraudulent cold callers.” "If something seems too good to be true it probably is. In real life one does not simply ‘become’ the long lost relative of a Nigerian Prince or magically win a lottery that they have never entered. Take time to look at the ‘offer’ and ask questions," explained Detective Sergeant Farrant. • If something sounds too good to be true it usually is.

• Don't respond to letters or emails saying you won the lottery - you haven't - it is always a scam.

• Legitimate offers and sites never require you to withdraw your money from your bank and send it through money transfer services such as Western Union.

• Talk to trusted friends and family members or if it is an investment opportunity, a qualified financial expert. This may involve a fee but it could prevent you losing your life-savings.

• If a genuine person is offering you a bona-fide deal they will wait for you to check it out and often encourage you to do so before.

Lincoln were 6/1. Then H. Paterson, and J. Benton, took their side to victory. They had to work for their runs, as Greendale tried hard, and were keen to the last ball. Liam Bragan (18 years), almost took a brilliant catch. At wide mid-on, the ball came like a bullet (almost!) close to the

ground, and he dived, and actually held it for a split second. Sth. Malvern lost to Weedons, by 205 runs. This game was played at Glentunnel on an artificial pitch. A couple were lying in bed together on the

morning of their 10th wedding

anniversary when the wife says, 'Darling,

as this is such a special occasion I think

that it is me I made a confession......

before we were married I was a hooker

for eight years..'

The husband ponders for a moment and

then looks into his wife's eyes and says,

'my love, you have been a perfect wife for

10 years! and I cannot hold your past

against you.. Maybe you could show me a

few tricks of the trade.”

She said, 'Darling I don't think you

understood me correctly, my name was

Brian and I played rugby for Wales'.
