director’s welcome Fremantle Arts Centre is proud to be presenting Shaun Tan: Suburban Odyssey, the first time a collection of Tan’s never seen before paintings as well as drawings and sketches have been shown in an exhibition.

The new City of Fremantle Art Collection Gallery will be launched with the exhibition Everything Old Is New Again. Superbly located on the North Wing ground floor, the new gallery will make the City’s significant art collection more visible and accessible to the public.

We now offer online enrolments in our extensive course program. It’s convenient and quick to enrol online via the FAC website.

suburban odyssey shaun tan:

Academy Award winner and favourite local son Shaun Tan comes to FAC with a collection of never before seen large scale paintings, small oil sketches, drawings, preparatory video work and personal sketchbooks.

For the first time Shaun Tan: Suburban Odyssey charts the journey of Shaun Tan’s work from carefully observed yet lyrical paintings of Perth’s suburbs to oil studies and drawings that develop characters and narratives which inhabit these vast landscapes. Shaun Tan: Suburban Odyssey highlights the poignant relationship between Tan’s suburban observations, often drawn and painted while on walks,

and the place they create for his universally popular book illustrations and short stories.

Shaun Tan is the illustrator and author of award-winning books such as The Red Tree, The Lost Thing, Tales of Outer Suburbia and The Arrival. In 2011 he won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for The Lost Thing and the world’s premier prize for children’s literature, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award. Tan was born in Fremantle in 1974, grew up in Hillarys and now lives and works in Melbourne.

Although I’m often recognised as an illustrator of stories, in private I see myself primarily as a painter of landscapes, particularly the suburban streets in which I grew up and continue to spend most of my time. This world is the bedrock of my imagination – a shoreline of light, space, restless silence – and my suburban paintings of the past twenty years are perhaps more self-defining than anything else I’ve created as a book or film maker.

Collecting them together under the roof of Fremantle Arts Centre (a place I visited often in my youth seeking inspiration and direction) is a terrific privilege and opportunity. I hope that exhibition visitors might enjoy the same realisation as I have during my local wanderings with a sketchpad or paint-box: that the most ordinary places can also be the most mysterious. Projektet draws on the notion of the immune system as a bio-artistic blueprint of personal and cultural changes.

In a joint residency with SymbioticA, Amanda Newall and Ola Johansson conduct lab-based research along with applied performance work in local communities in the metropolitan Perth area. SymbioticA is an artistic laboratory at UWA dedicated to the research, learning, critique and hands-on engagagement with the life sciences. The exhibition will involve a variety of media, such as lab results, costume, physical objects, video and performative actions. Experiments with our most outreaching and personal site of identity, the corporeal immune system, will provoke graphic, material, conceptual and live reactions that applies to site-specific circumstances where social actors will ultimately come up against the limits of their own identities/communities. Bio-artistic game concepts will incite personal and collective (inter)actions toward future communal relations beyond biological determinism and cultural utopias.

City of Fremantle celebrates the opening of a new and dedicated Collection gallery in the newly refurbished North Wing.

The new Collection Gallery is a larger ground floor space directly adjacent to FAC’s reception.

Everything Old Is New Again presents for the first time recently donated early ‘en plein air’ paintings by Kathleen O’Connor alongside other iconic historical and contemporary works by Fremantle artists George Haynes, Jane Martin, Alex Spremberg, Jeremy Kirwan-Ward and Helen Smith.

Photo with the Artist is a site-specific performance combining the traditions of performance art and sculptural practice with side-show and street performance.

Dressed in appropriate ‘artistic’ attire, Brown Council hit the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour to busk for money. Brown Council invite members of the public to have their photo taken with them and for a small cost the person can take home a signed portrait. This work asks the audience to reconsider what an ‘artist’ might look like and what an artwork can be; along with literally playing out the cliché of the poor starving artist.

Brown Council is the collaborative practice of Sydney-based artists Frances Barrett, Kate Blackmore, Kelly Doley and Diana Smith. Recently they have produced work for Perspectives on Video Performance at Regina Rex in New York, Primavera 2011 at Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Sydney and Tell Me Tell Me: Korean and Australian Art 1976–2011 at the MCA and National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, South Korea.

FotoFreo 2012 | The City of Fremantle Festival of Photography

The Portrait: Contemporary Indian Photography Group Exhibition (India) The Portrait examines the nature of current Indian photography through the eyes of five contemporary portrait photographers. Curated by Devika Daulet-Singh, the exhibition includes the work of established Indian photographers Dileep Prakash, Gauri Gill, Ketaki Sheth, Vidura Jang Bahadur and Bharat Sikka.

Salt | Murray Fredericks (NSW) Salt is an ongoing series of photographs that encompass the vast and seemingly empty space of Lake Eyre in South Australia. Lake Eyre is a landscape devoid of features, extending out in every direction with its perfectly flat surface and razor sharp horizon. This exhibition challenges the idea of an Australian landscape.

Fair Game | Eric Bridgeman (QLD) Eric Bridgeman’s photography invariably involves satire, usually political and fun. This exhibition is a selection of recent work.

Richard and Famous | Richard Simpkin (NSW) Simpkin started his Richard and Famous project in 1989 when he was just 15. For 23 consecutive years he has documented his life in photos, and that in itself is impressive but then you add the celebrity aspect to it and the project evolves into a unique piece of art.

City of Fremantle Art Collection Side x Side

Side x Side presents new artworks by students from Fremantle’s John Curtin College of the Arts, alongside those works from the City’s Collection that inspired them.

John Curtin’s senior students have responded to a previous exhibition Not Dead, a selection of still lives from the City’s Collection.

Side x Side marks a milestone in a successful six year partnership between the City of Fremantle Art Collection and John Curtin, through a program of tutorials, exhibitions on campus and class visits to FAC.

Through this project students are exposed to examples of artworks by WA artists, making the experience and enjoyment of visual arts all the more engaging and relevant.

artists in residenceFAC’s AIR program enables

artists to engage in research and development. FAC is committed to supporting local and visiting

artists execute ideas and projects while bringing their work into

public dialogue. The AIR program has nine studios at FAC and two at

the rear of the Moores Building.

Andrew Daly (WA/China) will be producing paintings influenced by the experience of living in China for the last few years. artist studio 8

Jackson Eaton (WA) will explore ways of physically representing the passage of time and the role of identity through photographic processes. Moores studio 2

Brendan Hutchens (WA) will research and develop a number of documentaries about creative sustainable housing design and will create interview based behind-the-scenes video snapshots of artists at work. artist studio 4

Ola Johansson and Amanda Newall (Sweden) will conduct lab-based research in a joint residency with SymbioticA. Their project Projektet looks at social conflict and resolution as it translates from the immune system. The artists will work through performative strategies and types of theatre application shaped and informed by observing viral cellular activity. Loren Kronemyer (USA), inspired by the natural forces of preservation and decay, will transform the studio space into an archaeology lab for the creation of objects that exist outside of traditional time scales. artist studio 1

Richard Lewer (AU/NZ) produces drawing, painting and animation marked by a sceptical humour and a focus on the darker sides of human behaviour, place and social identity. artist studio 6

Lia McKnight (WA) continues an interest in beauty as an internal response to phenomena and will develop a body of multi-media work, Pieces of ourselves we leave behind, investigating the human impact we have on others and the world around us. artist studio 7

The Museum of Natural Mystery (WA) is directed by artists David Egan and Patrick Miller. Working across exhibitions and residencies as both curators and artists in cooperation with FAC, they will research and develop alternative channels of distribution and communication for the exhibition of contemporary art. artist studio 3

Clare Peake (WA) continues development of mixed media works that extend her current interest in the ways knowledge is accumulated and made sense of, through discovery and exploration. Moores studio 1

Tanya Schultz (WA) is developing a new body of mixed-media work first there is a mountain, that investigates the parallels between the illusory nature of imagined worlds and the promise and allure of material culture. Moores studio 1

Lynnette Voevodin (WA), with humour and self-reflection, will take a multi-disciplinary approach into her research of slavery: the ideas of capture and freedom, sadness and laughter. artist studio 1

Artist Run Initiative

Every year FAC invites applications for an Artist Run Initiative (ARI). The successful applicant is given studio space, mentorship, access to FAC resources and support.

Rhinoceros (AU) are the inaugural recipients of FAC’s ARI residency. The Rhinoceros crash are an eclectic collaborative of local and interstate artists who engage in creative projects that reflect their interest in process and dialogue by generating a range of projects such as studio talks, ‘flash’ residencies and off-site exhibitions. Quarter Acre | Michael O’Connell (WA): O’Connell’s exhibition of paintings explores the constraints, limitations and the allure of the idealised quarter acre suburban block. The homogeneous nature of suburbia entices us to search for a more glamorous identity and persona. Is the grass greener over another fence?

Life–an adventure | Frank Kocsis (WA): A photographer and educator, this retrospective of Kocsis’s work takes us around the world and covers over 50 years of observation and composition.

11–27 May

Time | Group Exhibition: Three WA artists explore visual perceptions of the passage of time and how that differs infinitely for each of us. Time is visually manifested as sequencing, bodies moving through space, or by migration. Includes painting, objects and photography by Barbara Douglas, Laura Mitchell and Anita Gadenne.

Our Own Point of View | Group Exhibition: This painting exhibition features the work of five WA artists; Ann Land, Elisabeth Ribul, Louise Paul, Angela Carter and Maxine Murray and represents each artist’s search for their own point of view. There is a sense of freedom as each in their own way explores the emotional possibilities of light, colour, texture, point of view and form. Curated by Marianna Atkins.

Exhibit Me | Kathryn Sprigg (WA): An exhibition of photographic images, candid and photo-journalistic in style, covering a wide range of genres from urbanscapes to portraits and abstraction.

Time Waits for No One | Zuhal Kuvan-Mills (WA): The exhibition uses sculpture, photographs, painting, textile, mixed-media and engagement with the gallery’s architecture to define terms of a constantly evolving artistic language. A variety of techniques are used from scaled photographs, to handmade textiles and commercial fabrication.

The Irregular Correct: New Art from Glasgow

Specially commissioned by FAC, The Irregular Correct brings together a significant line-up of contemporary artists from Glasgow, a city which has rebuilt itself from a declining port town into a city whose artists have, for the last two decades substantially influenced contemporary British and European art. Curated by Alex Pollard and Clare Stephenson, this exhibition brings together diverse work from Glasgow that represents different positions within sculptural installation, painting, video and context art. Artists include Ciara Phillips, Clare Stephenson, Iain Hetherington, Rob Kennedy, Stephen Sutcliffe, Sophie Macpherson, Jane Topping, Alan Michael, Michael Fullerton and Alex Pollard.
