YMCA Day Camp Y Summer Day Camp is designed to provide a positive camp experience, in a safe and accepting environment. Well-trained, qualified staff serve as positive role models for campers. Y Summer Day Camp enhances camper’s self-confidence, self-esteem and lead-ership skills through well planned fun activities. Campers develop a true un-derstanding of diversity in an atmos-phere of acceptance and approval through the uniqueness of others. Campers are motivated to be creative, expressive and learn new skills. Y Day Camp strives to address Summer Learn-ing through theme based curriculum that includes key academic compo-nents. Campers will learn appreciation of the environment and learn ways to take an active role in protecting and conserving it. There will be a focus on social development and teamwork.

All YMCA Day Camps are licensed by the NYC Department of Health and Accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA).

Dear Parents, The West Side YMCA is about to embark on another summer camp journey. Our 2011 YMCA Summer Camp program will be in session from June 29th through August 26th. We would like to take this opportunity to welcome back our old campers and invite new ones to join our family of summer fun. At the West Side YMCA, we offer our campers a comprehensive and memorable camping experience. We look to foster a camper’s educational and social development. Our Summer Camp has been tailored to demonstrate how hands-on-learning through outdoor and indoor educational activities can be a powerful addition to our summer curriculum. Our activities include instructional swim, arts, literacy and games with a biweekly focus on recreational sports conducted at various locations including the West Side Y, local schools, and commu-nity parks. We offer literary skills through singing songs, writing journals, recreational reading, and performances. Through our summer camp curriculum we provide opportunities for leader-ship development, socialization, and self-esteem building, while translating those efforts into Developmental Assets which allow children to perform better in the classroom. We also offer scholarships for our Summer Day Camp Program. Scholarship applications will be available at the Welcome Center from January 3rd; the deadline for all scholar-ship applications is March 31st, 2011. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nigel Bristol, Day Camp Coordi-nator at 212-912-2666 or by email at [email protected] and Teen Director Cassandra St. Vil at 212-912-2665 or by email at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at our Open House! Sincerely, Nigel Bristol Day Camp Coordinator

Camp is op-erated in the beautiful West Side YMCA’s Co-Op Nursery School classrooms. Activities are organized in one-to-two week themes designed by the head counselors. Favorite themes include; Outer Space, Home, Sci-ence & Nature, Animals, Myself, and Our Neighborhood. Campers swim three times a week and enjoy storytelling, music, sports, games, and a weekly field trip. This camp fills up every year so we encourage you to register as soon as possible. This camp is the exception to the weekly session design seen in other camps. Registration for the month of July is only available for the full month. All participants must be fully potty trained before attending this camp. Campers will follow a stimulat-ing rotation of sports which include basket-ball, soccer, running games and swimming

on a daily basis. Softball/baseball, la-crosse, volleyball, dodge ball and handball, track and field and other field sports are introduced several times throughout the session. All activities are designed to be fun, instructional, and skill-building while at the same time helping campers develop confidence, enthusiasm, and a genuine love of sports. The YMCA Sports Camp pro-gram also places a high level of focus on sportsmanship, team play, individual learn-ing styles, hands on play and safety at all times. Each day includes stretching and conditioning as well as talks about living a healthy life including nutrition and exer-cise. Price: $350 per week Ages: 8-14 For more information contact Nigel Bristol, [email protected] Arts Camp June 29 to August 26, 2011 9:00AM – 5:00PM Extended AM and PM Care Available Inspire the Artist Within Your Child! Of course, the YMCA is known for swimming and basketball, but in camp we also cele-brate the artist, actor or playwright that lives inside all young people. Studies show that young people with experiences rich in the arts have better grade-point averages; score better on standardized tests in read-ing and math and have lower dropout rates than students without such encounters. The West Side YMCA’s Summer Arts Camp allows all young people, regardless of pre-vious ability, to learn to paint, write, sing, dance, and act. Using the amazing artistic resources found in New York City, the YMCA partners with local artists, museums, theaters and artistic groups to offer a one of a kind summer arts experience! Visual Arts: Drawing, painting, ceramics, hand building, comic book illustration, scene design and painting, costume design and construction Dance: ballet, modern, jazz, step, hip hop, acrobatic, choreography, ballroom and musical theater dance Drama: Acting, improv, character building, theater movement, stage combat, re-hearsal for play, acting for musical thea-ter, theater games

End-of-Summer Show Spectacular: Our exciting end-of-summer show in 2010 was Where the Wild Things Are, and was held in the spectacularly renovated Marjorie S. Deane Little Theater. Campers had the amazing opportunity to rehearse and per-form on a professional Off-Broadway stage! Campers designed the lighting, constructed costumes and sets, danced, sang, and acted, utilizing all five arts disciplines, gaining full ownership over the final product by being involved in every aspect of the process.
