A SUMMER LIKE NO OTHER YMCA CAMP SPAULDING

2015 RESIDENT CAMP GUIDE

Page 2: YMCA Camp Spaulding

WELCOME TO YMCA CAMP SPAULDING Since 1921, Camp Spaulding has helped campers from all types of backgrounds enjoy the benefits of a traditional camp experience. YMCA Camp Spaulding helps to prepare young people for their future by engaging them in developing life skills. They learn to become leaders for the causes they believe in, to live sustainably, to care for our shared environment, and to live cooperatively in a culturally diverse community. Resident camp unrutures the potential of youth and creates a sense of community among campers of all ages through a wide variety of programs.

The YMCA invented camp…who could do it better?

"I can be myself here. Sometimes I feel different from others, but here, people like me for who I am. And I've become a good swimmer, climber and friend." -Camper

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY The Camp Spaulding experience is guided by the core

values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These values guide every game,

relationship, and program.

Camp has a culture of its own to improve the lives of campers during and after the camp experience:

Do the Great Thing - not just the right thing Inspire Smiles - you have to be happy first

Reach Beyond Your Walls - expand your comfort zone Create-O-Vate - think outside the box

The core values and culture work together to create values driven, well rounded campers!

EVERY CHILD DESERVES CAMP

Camp Spaulding offers need-based financial assistance on a sliding scale. Any aid that we are able to offer will be based on household income and funding resources available from the Y.

If you would like more information about our financial assistance program, please contact Josh Schupack.

You must apply and be approved for financial assistance BEFORE you register for camp.

THE RESIDENT CAMP EXPERIENCE

Two Week Traditional Camp (Ages 8-15)

The resident camping experience is one of the strongest programs of the YMCA today. Led by

adult role models, campers will live, eat, play, and grow with their peers. Through all aspects of the camp day, the cabin unit becomes your camper’s

hope base and greatest unit of support.

Rite of Passage (One Week Camp, Ages 7-10)

Maybe your camper is looking for a taste of what a resident camp is like; Rite of Passage camp is the experience your camper is looking for. Campers in this one week session get a sample of the resident

camping experience.

Leaders in Training (16+) A chance for our older campers to learn what it

takes to become a positive youth development role model. Teens will be part of a cohesive team that

will be essential in the operation of camp and gain experience working with campers. This program requires an application and a selection process.

FACILITIES Camp Spaulding’s programs are enhanced by great facilities. These facilities include:

- 4,800 Sq/Ft Dining Hall and Program space - 22 Element High and Low Ropes Course - Basketball Court and Theater Pavillon - Arts and Crafts Center - Health Center with Nursing Staff - 40,000 Gallon Pool - Horse Stable and Riding Ring - Access to the Contoocook River - Playground and Field Space - Volleyball Courts

We take pride in our facility and work to maintain a beautiful grounds year round. Our facility engineers staff are among the best in creating a safe place for youth to grow!

CABIN LIVING AND DINING The heart of the resident camping experience! Living with a cabin of peers for up to a 2-week experience creates friendships and bonds that cannot be matched in many other scenarios.

Cabin mates will eat meals together; learn how to share a common living space; depend on each other and; work together to decide what type of camp experience they want to have. The cabin functions as your child’s home base and main source of support in an already supportive environment.

Cabin living also creates a great opportunity for learning independence and confidence. Even the most dependent camper has to learn how to make their bed, set a table, sweep out the cabin, and keep track of their things. This creates opportunities for self growth and leadership for youth of all ages.

One of the best ways to build community is to share a meal with your friends. Cabin groups will sit down for a meal 3 times a day and enjoy the company of their cabin as well as the nutritious food prepared by our Food Service Providers. Our food service program has experience with special dietary needs as well as cultural restrictions; all you need to do is ask!

YMCA CAMP SPAULDING STAFF A great camp is created by great staff. The Staff at YMCA Camp Spaulding undergoes several days of training and planing to create a one of a kind experience. Above all, the staff has a true desire to impact the life of a child.

Homesickness can be a real concern for some campers (and parents!). Our counselors are specially trained to work with homesickness and all parents will receive a call by the end of their first week to tell you how your camper is doing.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING The safety and care of our campers is paramount. Our Health Center is staffed by a full-time nurse who ensures that our campers stay healthy and are well cared for if they become ill. In addition to our Health Center staff, the entire staff is trained in first aid and CPR.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT The resident camp experience is rooted in helping campers grow into confident, independent, civically minded members of society. Through fun, campers at Camp Spaulding will gain opportunities to be leaders and explore their own opinions and values in a safe, supportive environment.

This is not just a summer camp, it is a place for boys and girls to grow into young men and women. We value the experience of getting to be a child. With a caring staff, honest principles, expectations of respect, and a culture of responsibility, campers will experience a summer like no other.
