Tradition Awards

Dean Hunt Memorial Award

Evelyn Nonthe Sanchez

Dean Hunt was the junior class president in 1973. This amazing young man battled cancer his entire Junior year and unfortunately passed away that same year. This award is in his memory.

This award goes to a JUNIOR who is OUTSTANDING in the field of LEADERSHIP.


Matthew Millett

Rulon T Shepherd AwardRulan T. Shepherd served as the Superintendent in Westwood’s first year. In his honor,

this award is given to the outstanding performing arts student, representing all four performing arts departments: chorus, orchestra, band, and drama.


Blue & Orange Award

This award is presented to a senior who is a HARD-WORKER, is always there WORKING BEHIND THE SCENES in all school projects, is consistently LOYAL

and yet expects no recognition.

The War Eagle Award is given to the top male & female athlete in their respective sport. These athletes display superior performance and leadership, the true Warrior way.


Mutt Ford Memorial Athlete Awards

Edgar “Mutt” Ford was a legendary head football coach for many years at Westwood. The Memorial Award is given to the male and female athlete that participates

and excels in multiple sports.


James S. Sturdevant Memorial Award

Savanna Bonitatibus

J.S. Sturdevant served Westwood as Principal from 1970 to 1981. This prestigious award is given to the top female student athlete.


E.R. Brimhall Award

Gordon He

E.R. Brimhall served as the first Principal of Westwood from 1962-1970. His memorial award is given to the top male student athlete.


Mel SizemoreMemorial Awards

Mel Sizemore was the very first Assistant Principal at Westwood High School beginning in the 1962-1963 school year. He came to Westwood from Mesa High School along with Elias Brimhall, who

was our first Principal. Mesa High’s loss and Westwood’s gain. Melvin was a dynamic fair playing Administrator. He was like the “Energizer Bunny”…always involved with his beloved

students…Class of 1965, 1967, 1969, etc. This award is given to one male and one female senior who excels in SERVICE and LEADERSHIP.


Jack Joyce"Spirit" Award

Molly Porter

Jack Joyce was the Principal of Westwood from 1981-1996. He had amazing school spirit and a love for Westwood. The criteria for this award are as follows: must be a senior, have a HIGH

ENERGY level and be a MOTIVATOR that consistently ENCOURAGES SCHOOL-WIDE SPIRIT. Although the student may not be a cheerleader in the classic sense of the word, this is a student who “cheerleads” by helping and encouraging others to achieve a common goal for

the good of Westwood.


Harold Crenshaw Unity Award

Harold Crenshaw was the Principal of Westwood from 1996-2002. He was a big man with a big heart that always stressed equality. Awarded to a senior, this scholarship goes to a student who promotes UNITY, is sensitive to DIVERSITY, and has demonstrated LEADERSHIP at Westwood.

Helen Riddle was Principal of Westwood High School from 2002 - 2012. Mrs. Riddle had a passion for recognizing the potential of every student and celebrating individual success.

This award is presented to two seniors who embody the Pride of Westwood through CHARACTER, SCHOLARSHIP and PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL EVENTS.

Shawn Lynch was the Principal of Westwood from 2013-2018. The Move Up Awards are given to two Seniors who embody the characteristics of our motto - Move Up. These characteristics include WORK ETHIC, PERSEVERANCE AND A NO-QUIT ATTITUDE resulting in both academic and personal growth. Simply put, the Move Up award goes to the students who have stood out in a consistent effort to improve their abilities and opportunities for the future.

IB Neal ScholarsThe IB Neal Scholarship is awarded to three IB Diploma Graduates that were selected and voted on by our IB teachers. Each award carries a $3000 scholarship that is sponsored by a generous family of a former Westwood IB graduate. The qualifications for the IB Neal Scholarship are captured in the IB learner profile which defines what it means to be an IB Student - an inquirer, a thinker, a communicator, someone who is knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, a risk-taker, balance and reflective. This year's winners truly represent what it means to be an IB Warrior. In the words of their teachers, they are ambitious, kind to all, always follow through on promises, as well as mature and responsible beyond their years. Of the 1.6 million Juniors who take the PSAT exam only 1.25% earn scores that qualify them as semifinalists. Then after a competitive application process that looks at academic records, SAT scores, participation in school and community
