• Please call me Chris.• I’m from Austin, Texas.• I live in Santa Cruz with my girlfriend, Katherine.• I studied linguistics at the University of Texas and the

University of Hawaii.• I have been teaching English for 12 years.• I have taught in Japan and Vietnam, as well as Texas,

Colorado, and Hawaii.• I love teaching, language, food, music, and martial arts.• Does anyone have any questions for me?

Students’ Introductions/Diagnostics

• You will have two minutes to introduce yourself.• Your goal is to present a self-introduction that your

audience will not forget.• You will have ten minutes to plan and practice your

introduction.• Once we begin presenting, you should pay attention

and take notes. Anything mentioned in a presentation may be on Friday’s test.

• Adhere to the time limit and show us your academic speaking skills.

• Make eye contact with the presenter.• Pay attention to your own body language.• Give positive feedback and show interest.• Create mental questions about the presenter’s

content.• Take notes.• Smile to encourage your classmate.• Avoid focusing on your own presentation while

others are presenting.

Listening Diagnostic

after listening, but we will only listen once.• I will collect your notes, but I will not grade

• Think of a slang term or idiomatic expression that you have been exposed to since you came to the U.S.

• Prepare a 2 minute presentation about this term to present to a student group on Wednesday.

• Include where/when you heard this term, its meaning, and some examples of how to use it.

• Be prepared to answer questions from your classmates about your term.
