  • What are the purposes of satellites? After World War II the Soviet Union occupied much of Eastern Europe. Stalin promised to hold free elections as soon as possible but that never happened. Communists controlled the governments of Eastern Europe using them as Satellite Nations. The Soviets backed harsh dictators, citizens were imprisoned, Winston Churchill called this an iron curtain as it shut out Eastern Europe from the democratic West.

  • In 1949, the U.S. formed an alliance with friendly European countries called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The members of NATO would defend each other against any Soviet aggression.

  • The free peoples of the world look to us for support in maintaining their freedoms. If We falter in our leadership, we may endanger the peace of the world and we shall surely endanger the welfare of our own nation. ------Harry Truman, Speech, March 12, 1947
