2021 Key School Priorities:

Dear Families,
Term 3 is well underway and we have had a fantastic start, both in and out of the classroom.
The vegetable patches are now producing, and the students have been helping Mrs C. with harvesting and preparing our lunch as part of our tuckshop menu.
We welcomed Mr Dale Last to our school and the students proudly showed him all of the improvements and projects that have been happening. Mr Last was impressed with our B.A.R.K.S site and our green thumbs! Thank you to Miss Elise and our students for watering their newly planted trees and grasses! They are looking good.
Thank you to our parents, staff and community for supporting our cookie dough fundraiser. Once the orders are checked and packed, you will be enjoying fresh cookies whenever you like! Than you to our P&C who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
We were involved in Jump Rope for Heart again this year and the students had a great time showing off their skipping skills. Thank you to Miss Julia who organised a great afternoon for the students.
Deadly Australians will be visiting our school next Wednesday and the students are looking forward to seeing and learning about our unique wildlife. Parents and families are welcome to join us, the presentation begins at 9am sharp.
Congratulations to Claire Griggs-Tetley on her selection for long jump. Claire will represent the Burdekin Small Schools Friday 13th August at the Burdekin District Athletics Carnival.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge will be finishing on the 27th of August and we are aiming for all of our students to reach their reading targets. Remember to record the titles of the books and send the recording sheet in before the challenge closes.
Can you see the green tinge on the oval? Our irrigation system is up and running and the grass is looking good. We have a new operating system, new pop ups and new wiring so we are all systems go! Thank you to Laurie and the team for their great work.

CLASSROOM NEWS
Prep: We are weather ninjas! We have been learning about the day and night sky and how the weather effects the activities we do each and every day. We are roaring ahead with our reading and we have also explored factual texts and using diagrams to learn about Australian animals.
Year 1: We have been learning about the changes in the sky and categorising the length of time it takes for a change to occur. We are working on addition and subtraction with 2 and 3 digit numbers—definitely number ninjas! We are categorising factual information into subheadings and learning about Australian animals.
Year 3-4: During maths, we have focussed on multiplication and division and applying this understanding to life-like situations. We are locating angles within our school environment and learning about the measurement of angles. We have explored the movement of the sun and the effect this movement has on the length and directions of our shadows.
Year 5 –6 We have been learning about the order of operations and how
brackets and the order of operations can effect the outcome of a problem. In
science, we are exploring light and the properties of light in changing
environments and circumstances. We are focussing on Australia and our
location within the world, and the effects climate has on the use of land around
the world.

‘Kalamia Kids’ PLAYGROUP
REMINDERS & NEWS
• Attendance matters—Ok Reasons to miss school—sick and natural disasters. NOT Ok reasons—shopping, holidays or sleeping in.
• No hat no play no outside learning activities—students are required to have their hat each and every day. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom and without a hat, your child may miss valuable information and practical lessons.
• Friday 13th August is the Burdekin Districts Athletics Carnival—best of luck to Claire who is competing in long jump for the 9 year old girls.
• As part of our Science Day, the school will provide lunch and morning tea—no cost to parents. There will be a selection a fruit, biscuits and snacks for morning tea and a sausage sizzle, popper and fruit for big lunch. Your child is welcome to bring along their own lunch if they do not wish to have the morning tea and lunch that is provided.

Principal’s and Student of
the Week Awards
Parade is held every Monday afternoon at 2.45 pm, either in the classroom or the undercover area (depending on the weather conditions and construction zones!) Each week, our Student of the Week Award and Principal’s Awards are presented on Parade. The Student of the Week Award recognises a student who has demonstrated improvement either in their learning or behaviour choices.

Week 2 was awarded to Jake for being a positive class member & a great start to Term 3.
Week 3 was awarded to Jackson for giving his best efforts during learning time
Student of the Week
Week 2 was awarded to Dylan for being a reading ninja!
Week 3 was awarded to Isabella for writing detailed sentences about Australian animals.

REMINDERS AND NEWS
• Cricket Queensland will be conducting coaching sessions over 6 weeks for Prep to Year students! Thank you to Sporting Schools and Crickey Queensland for their support.
• Tuckshop will return on even weeks—Thank you Mrs C. Our Student Council will work closely with Mrs C to collate orders, tally money and compile an expenses and profit/loss report for the student body and P&C.
• Deadly Australians is on Wednesday 10th August, at 9.00am. Parents and families are welcome to join us for an educational and informative presentation.
• We will be hosting a writing workshop with author Tania Cox on Tuesday 17th August! We are looking forward to working with Tania and developing our creative writing skills. Our friends from Maidavale and Airville State Schools will be joining us.
• Monday 16th August is Science Day! We will be conducting science investigations all day and
we hope to see our friend and Adopt –A Cop Monica! Our friends from Maidavale and Airville State Schools will be joining us.
