Year 2 Topic Planning Select an activity from this grid to complete.
Design an Island English
There are over 10,000 islands in this continent, many of them are tiny and uninhabited. If you
discovered a new island, what would you build on it? Where would you live and what
would you grow to eat? Who would you invite to your island?
Money is no object so design your own island and describe what you have done to it and
why.
Snow English
Australia has a very warm climate and so it
hardly ever snows there. Write a letter to a
penpal in Australia telling them about snow. Remember to explain what snow is, when we get it, what it looks like and what you can do
in it. Or you could write a poem about snow. Poems don’t have to rhyme but they are
descriptive so create a word bank of great adjectives you can use first.
Aboriginal Art
Art Before canvasses were
used for art the
Aborigines would paint
their bodies or draw in
the sand both of which could be removed
easily as their pictures were so sacred, they
didn’t want westerners to see them. They
also used dots for their art to disguise the
sacred meanings of their pictures.
Using a cotton bud to make the dots, create
your own piece aboriginal art.
Commonwealth Citizenship/Geography
The Commonwealth is a group of 52
countries that have Queen Elizabeth II as
their Head of State. They work together to
support each other with making laws and
trade deals as well as ensuring democracy
and equality. 9 of the countries in Australasia
are in the Commonwealth including Australia
and New Zealand. Carry out some research
on the Commonwealth and see if you can
find some of the other countries that are
part of it.
Hakka Sport
New Zealand’s rugby team perform the Haka
before their international games. The Haka was
traditionally performed by Maori’s as they
prepared to go into battle and the All Blacks have
adopted it to scare their opposition!
See if you can learn a Haka.

Australian Christmas Dinner Food Technology
As Australia is on the opposite side of the world, their seasons are opposite too. This
means Christmas falls in their summer when it is really hot. Because of this most
Australians have a picnic for their Christmas dinner or even a bbq on the beach!
Plan your ideal Australian Christmas dinner, what would you eat? Don’t forget a starter
and dessert. Would you rather have a picnic or a bbq?
Flag Bunting Geography/Art
This is the last week to add to your bunting. Hopefully you have enjoyed
learning about and creating flags from around the world.
Australasia had 54 countries to choose from so have fun!
Make a Rainstick DT/Music
Rainsticks were traditionally used by tribes like the Aborigines. They believed that it would bring rain
for their crops during the dry seasons. Have a go at making your own. Here is a you tube clip or just get an inner tube from something like
cling film, push in some nails or pins and add dried pulses. Finally decorate it and bring the rain! Make sure your grown ups get the washing in
first! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0C-

Antarctica Fact File Geography
Antarctica is the coldest place on earth. It contains 90% of the world’s ice. It has so
little rainfall it is considered to be a desert! It also has volcanoes .What else can you find out about Antarctica. Present your findings
however you want: fact file, PowerPoint, poster, or quiz.
Some good sites for research are National Geographic for kids, Ducksters and BBC
bitesize.
Be an Explorer Many people have wanted to explore the
South Pole and Antarctica. The most famous being Roald Amundsen and
Ernest Shakleton. Imagine you are going to travel to the Antarctica. Plan your
adventure. What equipment would you need to take? Where would you sleep, what would you eat, what would you wear? How would you carry it all and
what do you think you would see? Happy planning!
Walk like a Penguin! For Fun!
Can you waddle like a penguin? Remember to keep your feet together. Now get a
ball and balance it on your feet. This is how they carry their eggs around as they
can’t make nests because there are no ‘building materials’ on Antarctica. Now try
and walk without dropping your ‘egg’.
Make your own Iceberg Science
90% of the earth’s ice is in Antarctica. The
largest iceberg ever recorded there weighed
1.4 trillion tonnes!
Make your own iceberg and see how only
10% of an iceberg is above water! Fill a
balloon or bag with water and freeze it.
Once frozen cut away the bag and float your
iceberg in some salty water. We would love
to see photos/videos of your experiment.
Best Antarctic Clothes Science
Can you discover which material would keep
you insulated against the outside weather for
longest?
Using ice cubes and different materials you
can find out. Wrap each ice cubes in a
different material You could try kitchen roll,
foil, a blanket, a towel, a pillow case and
bubble wrap. To make it a fair test you must
put all the ice cubes in the same place and
leave them for the same amount of time. The
ice cube that melts the least and therefore
kept coldest has the best insulating material.
This would work in reverse and the material
would also keep you warm against the cold
of the Antarctic.
Make a Penguin DT
You need a small plastic bottle (like a water bottle) and an old black sock. Put some water or sand into
your bottle to give it weight then put the bottle into the
sock cap first, then tie the sock at the bottom with an elastic band. This is now the penguin’s tail so you might want to trim it. Now give your penguin a white paper tummy, some eyes, an orange beak and feet and some black paper
flippers. You might even be able to make him a hat and scarf.
Climate Change - Animal Adaptations
Science/Environmental Awareness Climate change is what happens when people’s
actions affect the Earth’s atmosphere, things like chemicals from car exhausts or factories going
into the air. Those chemicals then trap heat close to the earth and make the whole planet warmer. Antarctica is affected more than other places as
the ice is melting very slowly and animals like penguins have less to live on.
Activity 1 - because of changes animals need to adapt. How might a penguin adapt to be able to live in water more and on ice less? Will it change physically? Will it change what it eats? Where will
it lay its eggs? Draw a penguin and label the features that might change to enable it to carry on
living in Antarctica.
Climate Change – What can you do?
Science/ Environmental Awareness People in charge of countries around the world are trying to make changes to stop
climate change but there are things we can do too. We all need to use less electricity and power and reduce the amount of chemicals
we release into the atmosphere. Activity 2 – What could you do at home to help reduce the amount of energy we use? Think about your home, your car and your
holidays. Make a poster showing how we can do our
bit to help stop climate change.
