Webster Groves Community Days is an annual event to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. The Citizen’s Committee for Community Days organizes all of the ac-tivities for the event. The Webster Groves Lions Club also holds its annual carnival and barbecue charity fundraiser during the celebration.

All activities (aside from the carnival

and barbecue) are FREE to the public and are funded through donations from busi-nesses, organizations and the citizens of Webster Groves.

Parade RouteThe Parade travels along a two-mile

route through the streets of Webster Groves and draws a crowd of thou-sands of spectators with nearly 100 units. See map below.

The parade begins at Lockwood and Selma and travels west on Lock-wood. It turns south on South Gore and travels down Gore to Big Bend. It then turns east on Big Bend and turns one last time south on Elm Avenue. The parade ends at Memorial Park (at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Glendale Road).

MarshalsThe Budweiser Clydesdales are the

Grand Marshals for the 2009 Parade. You’ll see the full hitch of beautiful horses. In addition, we are honored to have volunteers from Webster Groves

Masonic Temple to serve as Parade Marshals again this year, lining up units, enforcing security measures and securing the course.

Parade JudgesJudges for the 2009 parade are:

Judges have the unenviable task of selecting parade units to receive awards in the various categories listed below. Units should include adequate signage to be considered for awards, as there is no emcee for the event. Awards will be given at the July 21 City Council meeting.

there will be a first place (Best) and an honorable mention (Outstanding) winner awarded. The categories are as fol-lows:Children’s Entry, Civic Entry, Classic Entry, Commercial Entry,Neighborhood Entry,Performing Entry, Best Theme, Visiting Entry,Novelty Unit, Special Judges’ Awards (three awards for deserving units that im-press the judges for various reasons.)

SafetyOf course, safety is of paramount

importance, but parades are inherent-ly risky, so it’s important that parade participants and spectators do all they can to help. The Parade travels along a two-mile route through the streets of Webster Groves and draws a crowd of thousands of spectators.

With regard to parade units, sev-eral safety measures are in place and enforcement will be without excep-tion. There will be no throwing of water balloons or large super soakers allowed from any parade unit or spec-tators.

Each sizeable motorized unit will have wheel walkers, whose job it is to keep the path clear in front and on the sides of the unit.

Parade participants will not be al-lowed to throw candy or other items from a moving unit; however, they may have walkers who will hand the items to spectators on the sidewalks.

Along the parade route, parents and adults should keep close track of their children and ensure that they are not endangering themselves by running in front of a parade vehicle to get a piece of candy or trinket. Re-main on the curb or behind it. Safety is everyone’s job. Please help by doing what you can.

Sponsored by Blue Ribbon Groom-ing, the Children’s Pet Parade is open to children 15 years old or younger. This event is a long-standing tradition in the Webster Groves community. It is designed as a good-natured com-petition where pets, with some assis-tance from their owners, compete in a variety of categories. Blue Ribbon Grooming provides the prizes and unenviable judging positions for this ever-popular event.

Webster Groves Lions Club Hosts 83rd Year Of Carnival & Barbecue

Ask a dozen adults what the highlight of the Web-ster Groves’ annual July 4th Celebration is, and you will get a dozen different answers: the fire-works, the parade, the BBQ food, the en-tertainment, seeing friends and neigh-bors, and so forth. But, ask a dozen children and teenagers about the Community Days/July 4th celebra-tion in Webster Groves, and the an-swer will almost always be the same: the Carnival Rides are the very best!

For the 83rd consecutive year, the Lions Club of Webster Groves will hold its annual summer-time Carnival & Barbecue. This tradition serves first and foremost as an opportunity for families, friends and neighbors in the community to come together in a safe, pleasant and patriotic setting.

And, since 1926, the Webster Groves Lions Club has relied on their annual Carnival & Barbecue as the group’s primary fundraising event of the year.

Bonneville Radio Group:A Great Radio Partner!

Bonneville Radio Group will be represented on the Lions Club July 4th Fairgrounds by three popu-lar and dynamic Radio Stations: 106.5 The Arch, 92.3 WIL and 101 ESPN. The presence of these radio sta-tions will add to the lively atmo-sphere of July 4th in Webster Groves. On-air personalities from these three radio stations will be present to mix & mingle, to do live call-in reports, and to broadcast live from the Fairgrounds.

The radio stations’ booth will be a busy and excit-ing place to visit. The radio stations will offer oppor-tunities at their Booth to win great prizes. And, the on-air personalities and staff from the radio stations will add substantially to the fun on the Fairgrounds.

Bring Old Eyeglasses &

Used Sunglasses To The Fairgrounds An on-going project of the Webster Lions and

other Lions Clubs, too, is the collection of old eye-glasses and used sunglasses for recycling and for re-use by people in Central America and South America. In fact, a group of Lions Club members from Metro St. Louis will be taking old eyeglasses and used sun-glasses to some rural villages in Mexico in August. But, at this time, there is an acute shortage of eye-glasses and sunglasses available for this upcoming Lions Clubs “Vision Mission”.

In the midst of having fun and enjoying the July

4th Fairgrounds, everyone is urged to bring and to donate old eyeglasses and used sunglasses at the

Lions Club Booth in the Fairgrounds Mid-Way. These donated eyeglasses and sunglasses

will be recycled and become a “Gift of Sight” to needy people in rural Mexico.

Lots of Rides & Food

This year promises to be one of the biggest and best July 4th events

ever in Webster Groves! The Fairgrounds will be filled with more than a dozen col-

orful, fun and classic amusement rides pro-vided by PBJ Happee Days Shows, Inc., one of

the finest companies of its kind. The huge Lions Club Food Tent will once again be one of the most popular places in town for all four days as a place to meet and, of course, to eat.

As always, Lions Club members will be grilling and serving a wide variety of freshly-prepared and reasonably-priced food such as full slabs of ribs, half slabs of ribs, pork steaks, chicken, rib tips, ribeye steaks, bratwursts, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked po-tatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, and more.

Outstanding Community Involvement

The Lions Club of Webster Groves is involved all year long in the planning and organizing of Web-ster’s annual Community Days/July 4th celebration. This dedicated effort by the Lions Club began in 1960 when the Webster Lions moved its 34-year-running summertime carnival and barbecue from Labor Day to July 4th as part of a then-new local event called Webster Groves Community Days.

The subsequent 49-year partnership between the Lions Club and Webster’s overall July 4th festivities has been a very special and very unique collabora-tion for the community and for people from all parts of the metropolitan region.

Hundreds of Volunteers

In order for the Webster Lions July 4th Carnival and Barbecue to occur, members of the Lions Club — and their families and friends — sacrifice their personal holiday fun to work virtually non-stop for a full week on the Fairgrounds. From the time set-up begins until clean-up is concluded, more than 6,000 volunteer hours are expended by Lions Club mem-bers and many other volunteers. Everything on the July 4th Fairgrounds is coordinated and supervised by members of the Webster Groves Lions Club. The overall Chairperson for the Webster Lions 2009 July 4th Carnival and Barbecue is Greg Hanser.

The Webster Lions also donate substantial fund-ing toward the spectacular fireworks display on July 4. The Lions Club also commits significant financial support to the reconditioning and restoration of the Lions Athletic Fields following the July 4th Carnival and Barbecue.

Memorable & Safe July 4th Holiday

The annual Webster Lions July 4th Carnival and Barbecue involves a considerable commitment to the community on the part of the Lions Club. And, safety is always a foremost concern. Several years ago, for example, the Webster Lions spent $17,000 to upgrade the electrical system that serves the July 4th Fairgrounds site.

The July 4th Carnival and Barbecue is the single largest project of the year for the Webster Groves Li-ons Club. Depending on the weather, the financial results are better some years than others. Year in and year out, the Lions Club works tirelessly to make the Community Days/July 4th festivities in Webster Groves a safe and memorable celebration for all!

gan Donor Drive will occur in a booth sponsored by Mid-America Transplant Services and the Webster Groves Lions Club. Sondra Sharpe was a resident of Webster Groves. She passed away on June 8, 2004, at 12 years after battling Cystic Fibrosis and after undergoing a double lung transplant in February 2004. Sondra had planned to conduct an Organ Donor Drive as part of a Church and School Service Project.

Old Eyeglasses/Used SunglassesFor the first time in many years,

there will be a Mid-Way Booth featur-ing the Lions Club. Members are too busy during the Carnival and Barbecue to staff a booth. This year, members from other Lions Clubs will explain the worthwhile endeavors and service aspects of Lions Club membership.

The Lions Club Booth will also be accepting donations of used eyeglass-es and sunglasses for recycling and re-use in Central and South America. In fact, a group of Lions Club mem-bers from Metro St. Louis will go to Mexico in August as part of a “Vision Mission”. There is an acute shortage of eyeglasses and sunglasses available for this undertaking.

From July 1 through July 4, please help to “Give the Gift of Sight” and bring used eyeglasses and old sun-glasses to the Lions Club Booth in the July 4th Fairgrounds Mid-Way.

Mistress of CeremoniesAngella Schwarzenbach will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies

this year. Angella was the First Runner-Up at the 1996 Miss Webster Groves Pageant. You may have seen her on the Jumbo-tron at Scottrade Center, leading contests with Blues spectators as the In-Game Host for the St. Louis Blues. She always has them end with a hearty, “Let’s Go Blues!” Or perhaps you know An-gella from her work with local shows, as a pit reporter for Cage of Fury, a reporter for Gateway International Raceway. She also regularly appears country line dancing on “St. Louis Country,” sometimes doing commercial spots. Angella has her degree in secondary education and is a former high school teacher for the Mehlville School District.

Pageant EntertainmentThe Webster Jazz Collective will serve as the Pageant enter-

tainment this year. This jazz band features extremely talented musicians, gifted beyond their years: Ally Hany (trumpet). Ja-cob Edwards (trombone), Joseph Winstein-Hibbs (drums), Sam Fruend (bass guitar), and Bo Bray (guitar.) Play list consists of standard and non-mainstream jazz. This year’s Miss Webster candidates are working together to choreograph the opening number.

Since 1925 the Lions Club of Webster Groves has contributed more than $2.8 million to worthwhile needs, includ-ing: aid to the blind, college scholarships, assistance to the needy and support of youth athletic teams. Here’s a brief review by decades of Lions Club presence in Webster Groves.

1920’s Lions Club of Webster Groves officially chartered by Lions International, March 12, 1925. The first Webster Lions “Carnival” held in August 1926.

1930’s Webster Lions financed and supervised construction of municipal tennis courts and baseball fields.

1940’s Webster Lions began hosting a luncheon for Webster High football team on the day before annual Turkey Day Game with Kirkwood.

1950’s Webster Lions financed and supervised construction of a permanent Wading Pool at the Municipal Pool in Memorial Park.

1960’s Webster Lions switched their annual “Carnival & Barbecue” from late summer/early fall to July 4th Holiday in support of Webster’s Community Days celebration which began in 1960. Annual “College Scholarship” program initiated in 1964 to benefit deserving high school graduates with almost $300,000 awarded to more than 200 local students!

1970’s Webster Lions were major contributors to the relocation of the Hawken House from Big Bend to Southwest Park. And donated substantially to improvements of Moss Field, including score board, lights and sprinkler system.

1980’s Webster Lions were major contributors toward construction of the Webster Groves History Center, popularly called the “Barn.”

1990’s Webster Lions spent more than $20,000 plus hundreds of hours of labor to install commercial grade electrical wiring in Memorial Park for benefit and safety of annual July 4th carnival-goers.

2000 Webster Lions welcomed the New Millennium by contributing more than $30,000 for improve-ments to the Andy High ball field on the Lions Club Athletic Fields in Memorial Park. Webster Lions also pledged a substantial, annual donation for the reconditioning of Memorial Park at the conclusion of Webster’s “4th of July/Community Days” festivities.

2006 Webster Lions spent more than $17,000 to completely upgrade the electrical system at Lions Club Athletic Fields to assure a safe and well-lighted July 4th Fairgrounds.

The Policy band members consist of Webster Groves High School graduates Tom Norman (guitar and lead vocals,) Chris Thomas (guitar and backing vocals,) Zach Smith (bass) and Chris Sell (drums.) The Policy, which plays clas-sic rock and some original compositions, has

played at Cicero’s in the Loop, the Miss Webster Pageant, and has had many gigs at churches in the area. This performance will be after the fire-works.

Saturday, July 47:30–11 p.m. (with a break for fireworks)Webster Groves Action ParkThe Fred Dickerson Band (rock ‘n’ roll)

Fred Dickerson’s music has taken him around the world. The 1976 Webster Groves High School grad has toured with Motown legend Martha Reeves, jazz great Michael White, and even the punk band he co-founded in 1986, the Jungle Studs. While Fred is comfortable and skilled at playing any genre, his first love has al-ways been classic rock ‘n’ roll, having attended hundreds of concerts in his teens.

After graduation, Fred traveled to the Bay Area, following his instincts, heart, and dreams, and finding an at-mosphere that was very conducive to music. After 28 years in California, Fred moved back to Webster Groves in 1999. He concen-trated on his family and his nursing career. Mu-sic was always there, but he focused on writing and recording songs instead of performing.

In the past year, Fred has been devoted to forming a band, and playing regularly. He has played the Sheldon Concert Hall and B.B.’s in St. Louis, and regularly plays at the Hwy 61 Road-house in Webster Groves. During the next year Fred will write and produce the first Fred Dick-erson Band CD. It will include all original ma-terial; a Midwestern tour will follow. His music will take him to his next destination.

The Fred Dickerson Band performs Saturday, July 4, from 7:30 to 11 p.m. at Webster Groves Action Park.

Carnival Ride “Wrist Band” Day!All Evening on July 1!

As a partner in the Family Day Activities on July 1, the Webster Lions and the Amusement Ride Co. (PBJ Happee Shows, Inc.) will offer $25 Wrist-Bands for both children and adults alike, so that EVERYONE may enjoy the Carnival Rides as often as desired. During the Webster Lions “July 4th” Carnival & Barbecue, everyone is heartily encouraged to bring used eyeglasses, old reading glasses or any type of sunglasses to the Lions Club Booth in the Mid-Way on the Fairgrounds. Lions Club members from numerous Lions Clubs in the area will be on hand to gladly accept the donations of eyeglasses and sunglasses.

The Webster Groves Lions Club has eyeglass collection boxes at various locations throughout the community, too, including the Schnuck’s Supermarket at Big Bend and Elm, Webster Eye Care, Webster Groves Public Library, Webster University, Shepherd’s Center at the Christian Life Center, Webster Groves Recreation Complex, Sappington Farmers’ Market, Porter’s Fried Chicken, Shur-Way Auto Body, Webster Groves Christian Church, Crown Vision, Gerber Chapel and Prudential Advantage Realtors.
