Webster Groves Community Days is an annual event to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday. The Citizens’ Committee for Community Days organizes all of the activities for the event. The Webster Groves Lions Club also holds its annual carnival and barbecue charity fundraiser during the celebration.

All activities (aside from the carnival and barbecue) are FREE to the public and are funded through donations from businesses, organizations and the citizens of Webster Groves.

“Year Of The Arts” Is Theme For The 2010 Parade

Parade RouteThe parade travels along a two-mile

route through the streets of Webster Groves and draws a crowd of thou-sands of spectators with over 80 units.

The parade begins at Lockwood and Selma and travels west on Lock-wood. It turns south on South Gore and travels down Gore to Big Bend. It then turns east on Big Bend and turns one last time south on Elm Avenue. The parade ends at Memorial Park (at the intersection of Elm Avenue and Glendale Road).

Webster Groves High School football team will be the Grand Marshals for the 2010 Parade. In addition, we are

honored to have volunteers from Webster Groves Masonic Temple to serve as Parade Marshals again this year, lining up units, enforc-ing security measures and secur-ing the course.

Parade JudgesJudges for the 2010 parade are:• Aimee Rich, owner of Krue-

ger Pottery in Webster Groves (also on Business Development

Commission & Old Orchard Special Business District Commission);

• David Sanders, owner of Old Or-chard Gallery in Webster Groves;

• Peter Sargent, Dean of the Leigh Gerdine College of Fine Arts at Web-ster University.

Judges have the honor of selecting parade units to receive awards in vari-ous categories. Units should include adequate signage to be considered for

awards, as there is no emcee for the event. Awards will be given at the July 20 city council meeting.Parade Awards

For each category there will be a first place (Best) and an honorable men-tion (Outstanding) winner awarded. The categories are as follows:

Children’s Entry, Civic Entry, Clas-sic Entry, Commercial Entry, Neigh-borhood Entry, Performing Entry, Best Theme, Visiting Entry, Novelty Unit, and Special Judges’ Awards (three awards for deserving units that impress the judges for various reasons.)

SafetyOf course, safety is of paramount

importance, but parades are inherent-ly risky, so it’s important that parade participants and spectators do all they can to help. The parade travels along a two-mile route through the streets of Webster Groves and draws a crowd of thousands of spectators with more

than 80 units. With regard to parade units, several

safety measures are in place and en-forcement will be without exception. There will be no throwing of water balloons or use of large super soakers from parade units or by spectators.

Each sizeable motorized unit will have wheel walkers, whose job it is to keep the path clear in front and on the sides of the unit.

Parade participants will not be al-lowed to throw candy or other items from a moving unit; however, they may have walkers who will hand the items to spectators on the sidewalks.

Along the parade route, parents and adults should keep close track of their children and ensure that they are not endangering themselves by running in front of a parade vehicle to get a piece of candy or trinket. Remain on the curb or behind it. Safety is everyone’s job. Please help by doing what you can.

As a partner in the Family Day Activities on July 1, the Webster Lions and the Amusement Ride Co. (PBJ Happee Shows, Inc.) will offer $25 Wrist-Bands for both children and adults alike, so that EVERYONE may enjoy the Carnival Rides as often as desired. Total Access Urgent Care, Schaefer Autobody Centers, Commerce Bank of Webster Groves, The Hub Bicycle Shop, and Sant Automotive are team-ing up to sponsor the Inaugural Ro-tary Duck Races.

There will be five races through the Lazy River, and the winner of each race will win a prize valued at $100. This year, the price of ducks is reduced from $5 to $2.

Proceeds from the event will fund a water safety program for kids from Webster-Rock Hill Ministries that will be conducted by the Webster Groves Parks and Recreation De-partment. The initial Rotary Water Safety Program will accommodate 24

In addition to the duck races, this year’s event will feature the Web-ster-Shrewsbury Independence Day Swim Meet. Kids from the Webster Waves will participate in a fun meet with kids from Shrewsbury.

But first, “The Duel in the Pool.” The Rotary Club of Webster Groves

has challenged the Webster Groves Lions to a swim race, and the Lions have foolishly accepted (cats can’t swim). Webster Groves Mayor Gerry Welch has agreed to officiate the chal-lenge race, and it will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, at the Web-ster Groves Aquatic Center. This will be a friendly competition and gam-bling is discouraged; however, the ex-pectation is that the losing team will provide the winners with delicious barbecue and refreshments.

After the decisive Rotary victory, the kids’ swim meet will continue. With the exception of relay races, the meet will follow the usual meet format. Kids will compete in various age groups and events in 52 different races.

In an effort to maximize contri-butions, the Rotary Club of Webster Groves will pre-sell ducks. Call Dick Sant at 849-2900 to reserve yours.

Webster Groves Lions Club Hosts 84th Year of Carnival & Barbecue

Ask a dozen adults what the highlight of the Webster Groves’ annual July 4th Celebration is, and you will get a dozen different answers: the fireworks, the parade, the barbecue, the entertainment, seeing friends and neighbors, and so forth. But ask a dozen children and teenagers about Community Days/July 4th celebration in Webster Groves and the answer will always be the same: The carnival rides are the very best!

For the 84th consecutive year, the Lions Club of Webster Groves will hold its annual summer-time Carnival and Barbecue. This tradition serves, first and foremost, as an opportunity for families, friends and neighbors in the community to come together in a safe, pleasant and patriotic setting. Since 1926, the Webster Groves Lions Club has relied on its annual Carnival and Barbecue as the group’s primary fundraising event of the year.

Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation FREE Vision Screenings On July 1

On July 1, the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation (MLERF) will be conducting free vision screenings for amblyopia and glaucoma. MLERF technicians will be available from 5 to 9 p.m. to provide this free service. July 1 is also Family Night at the carnival, so bring the whole family and take advantage of this FREE vision screening.

Bring Old Eyeglasses and Used Sunglasses to the Fairgrounds

An ongoing project of the Webster Lions and other Lions Clubs is the collection of old eyeglasses and used sunglasses for recycling and for reuse by people in Central and South America. In the midst of having fun and enjoying the July 4th Fairgrounds, everyone is urged to bring and to donate old eyeglasses and used sunglasses at the Lions Club

Booth in the Fairgrounds midway. These donated glasses will be recycled and become a “Gift of Sight”

to needy people in other countries.

Lots of Rides and FoodThis year promises to be one of the

biggest and best July 4th events ever in Webster Groves! The Fairgrounds will be filled with more than a dozen colorful, fun and classic amusement

rides provided by PBJ Happee Days Shows, Inc., one of the finest companies

of its kind. The huge Lions Club Food Tent will once again be one of the most popular

places in town for all four days as a place to meet and, of course, to eat. As always, Lions Club members will be grilling and serving a wide variety of freshly-prepared and reasonably-priced food such as full slabs of ribs, half slabs of ribs, pork steaks, chicken, rib tips, rib eye steaks, bratwursts, hamburgers, hot dogs, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, baked beans, and more.

Outstanding Community Involvement

The Lions Club of Webster Groves is involved all year long in the planning and organizing of the Webster’s Annual Community Days/July 4th Celebration. This dedicated effort by the Lions Club began in 1960 when Webster Lions moved its 34-year-running summertime carnival and barbecue from Labor Day to July 4th as part of a then-new local event called Webster Groves Community Days. The subsequent 50-year partnership between the Lions Club and Webster’s overall July 4th festivities has been a very special and very unique collaboration for the community and for people from all parts of the metropolitan region.

Hundreds of VolunteersIn order for the Webster Lions July 4th Carnival

and Barbecue to occur, members of the Lions Club — and their families and friends — sacrifice their personal holiday fun to work virtually non-stop for a full week on the Fairgrounds. From the time set-up begins until clean-up is concluded, more than 6,000 volunteer hours are expended by Lions Club members and many other volunteers.

Everything on July 4th Fairgrounds is coordinated and supervised by members of the Webster Groves Lions Club. The overall Chairperson for the Webster Lions 2010 July 4th Carnival and Barbecue is Randy Johnson. The Webster Lions donate substantial funding toward the spectacular fireworks display on July 4. The Lions Club also commits significant financial support to the reconditioning and restoration of the Lions Athletic Fields following the July 4th Carnival and Barbecue.

Barbecue involves a considerable commitment to the community on the part of the Lions Club. Safety is always a foremost concern. Several years ago, for example, the Webster Lions spent $17,000 to upgrade the electrical system that serves the July 4th Fairgrounds site.

The July 4th Carnival and Barbecue is the single largest project of the year for the Webster Groves Lions Club. Depending on the weather, the financial results are better some years than others. Year in and year out, the Lions Club works tirelessly to make the Community Days/July 4th festivities in Webster Groves a safe and memorable celebration for all!

Since 1925 the Lions Club of Webster Groves has contributed more than $2.8 million to worthwhile needs, includ-ing: aid to the blind, college scholarships, assistance to the needy and support of youth athletic teams. Here’s a brief review by decades of Lions Club presence in Webster Groves.

1920’s Lions Club of Webster Groves officially chartered by Lions International, March 12, 1925. The first Webster Lions “Carnival” held in August 1926.

1930’s Webster Lions financed and supervised construction of municipal tennis courts and baseball fields.

1940’s Webster Lions began hosting a luncheon for Webster High football team on the day before annual Turkey Day Game with Kirkwood.

1950’s Webster Lions financed and supervised construction of a permanent Wading Pool at the Municipal Pool in Memorial Park.

1960’s Webster Lions switched their annual “Carnival & Barbecue” from late summer/early fall to July 4th Holiday in support of Webster’s Community Days celebration which began in 1960. Annual “College Scholarship” program initiated in 1964 to benefit deserving high school graduates with almost $300,000 awarded to more than 200 local students!

1970’s Webster Lions were major contributors to the relocation of the Hawken House from Big Bend to Southwest Park. And donated substantially to improvements of Moss Field, including score board, lights and sprinkler system.

1980’s Webster Lions were major contributors toward construction of the Webster Groves History Center, popularly called the “Barn.”

1990’s Webster Lions spent more than $20,000 plus hundreds of hours of labor to install commercial grade electrical wiring in Memorial Park for benefit and safety of annual July 4th carnival-goers.

2000 Webster Lions welcomed the New Millennium by contributing more than $30,000 for improve-ments to the Andy High ball field on the Lions Club Athletic Fields in Memorial Park. Webster Lions also pledged a substantial, annual donation for the reconditioning of Memorial Park at the conclusion of Webster’s “4th of July/Community Days” festivities.

2006 Webster Lions spent more than $17,000 to completely upgrade the electrical system at Lions Club Athletic Fields to assure a safe and well-lighted July 4th Fairgrounds.

Miss Webster Pageant: Friday, July 2, 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.Webster Groves Aquatic Center (Webster Groves Recreation Complex in the event of rain)

The goal of the Miss Webster Groves Pageant is to select a well-rounded representative of the City of Webster Groves, who may appear at various activities throughout the year. Each candidate is qualified to be the next teen ambassador, Miss Webster Groves 2010.

Candidate QualificationsCandidates are Webster Groves residents

entering or exiting grades 10-12. They will be judged in the areas of interview, poise and appearance, sportswear, evening wear and contribution to the community, with some weight given to grade point average with curriculum justification.

Mistress of CeremoniesKatie Pieri will serve as Mistress of

Ceremonies this year. Katie is a graduate from Missouri State University, with her degree in parks and recreation. Katie did her internship with the City of Webster Groves and is now employed as a Recreation Specialist with Fenton Parks and Recreation at Riverchase. She worked with candidates during their choreography practices prior to this pageant.

Toni Hunt; Mayor Gerry Welch; Director of Webster Groves/Shrewsbury Chamber of Commerce Diane Lamboley; Business Development Commission Member Lee Moss; and past Miss Webster Sarah Krenski (2001.)

Pageant Entertainment

The Webster Jazz Collective will serve as the Pageant entertainment for the second year. The band features talented musicians, gifted beyond their years, two of whom were chosen as Grammy finalists (only 50 high school musicians in the country are chosen) and each a member of the All-State Jazz Band: Ally Hany (trumpet), Jacob Edwards (trombone), Joseph Winstein-Hibbs (drums), Charles Clemons (bass guitar), and Bo Bray (guitar).

Miss Webster candidates are working to choreograph the opening number.

A native of East St. Louis, Alvin Jett has been en-tertaining audiences in the Metro area for 25 years. From a musical family, Jett quickly learned the ru-diments of guitar and performing. He received his formal blues education playing with Tommy Bank-head & the Blues Eldorados, and honed his skills into his own fiery brand of hard driving St. Louis blues. The band performs its unique style of original blues music as well as R&B and rock standards. The track “Angels Sing The Blues” from the Phat noiZ’ 2006 release “Milk & Cookies” won Best Blues Song in the 2007 Independent Music Awards. The group performs at venues across St. Louis regularly.

Community Music Festival July 1-4

MUSYC, a three-part harmony band performing clas-sics from the likes of James Taylor, Fleedtwood Mac, Crosby Still and Nash and more, are on stage Saturday, July 3, beginning at 7 p.m.
