NOTE OF THE NIGHTAPPROACHING 700- With 698 career goals, Ovechkin is aiming to reach the 700-goal mark tonight in his 1,139th career game, which would be the second-fewest games required to reach the milestone in NHL history. Wayne Gretzky (886 games) and Brett Hull (1,157 games) are the onlyplayers to record 700 goals in fewer than 1,200 games.- Ovechkin would go from 600 to 700 goals in only 149 games, the fewest games to make that leap for any member of the 700-goalclub. Should he record two goals tonight, it would mark the second-fewest games Ovechkin has required to go from one 100-goalmilestone to another in his career (100 to 200 goals, 129 games).- Ovechkin has averaged 0.61 goals-per-game at this point in his career, ranking fifth in NHL history (minimum 300 games played),including an NHL-best 0.59 rate since his 30th birthday on Sept. 17, 2015. Among players in the 700-goal club, only two scored at arate of 0.50 goals per game or higher from the age of 30 onward (Esposito: 0.57; Dionne: 0.51).  TOP CAPS FACTS  OVI REACHES 40- Alex Ovechkin is tied for first in the NHL with 40 goals. Ovechkin reached the 40-goal mark before any other player, the ninth time inhis career he was the first player to reach the mark, extending his NHL record.- Ovechkin's 11 40-goal seasons are the second-most in NHL history, only trailing Wayne Gretzky’s 12, and he is the only player in NHLhistory to record 11 40-goal seasons with one team.- Ovechkin recorded his 40th goal in 53 games, the third-fewest games to reach the mark in his career, trailing his 2009-10 season (51games), when he was 24 years old, and his 2007-08 season (52 games), when he was 22 years old.- He became the 10th player in NHL history to score 40 goals at the age of 34 or older and the first since Daniel Alfredsson in 2007-08.Only two players have scored 50 goals at the age of 34 or older: Johnny Bucyk in 1970-71 (51 goals) and Jaromir Jagr in 2005-06 (54goals). Ovechkin will be 34 years and 209 days old on April 4, the final game of the season, and he is currently on pace to finish hisyear with 60 goals. LAST WE MET - The last time the Capitals played the Islanders on Jan. 18, Washington scored five unanswered goals in the third period  to win 6-4.- With that win, Washington, which also won after overcoming a three-goal, third-period deficit on Oct. 25 at Vancouver, accomplishedthe feat multiple times in a single season for the first time in franchise history.- The five third period goals marked the most goals the Capitals have scored in a single period this season and the first time theCapitals have recorded that many goals in a period since Nov. 5, 2013 (five, vs. Islanders in 6-2 win).- Washington holds a record of 7-12-1 when they trail a game after two periods, the best point percentage in the NHL (.350). CARLY FOR NORRIS- John Carlson has 51 assists this season, which leads all defensemen. Carlson reached the 50-assist total in his 54th game, setting thefranchise record for the fewest games to reach the total by a Capitals defenseman, nine games fewer than the previous low of 63 set byMike Green in 2009-10. He became the NHL's fifth different defenseman in the last 30 years to reach the 50-assist mark in 54 games orfewer and first since Sergei Zubov in 1993-94.- Carlson has 21 multi-point games, seven more than the next closest defenseman (Nashville’s Roman Josi: 14). With 27 gamesremaining, Carlson’s 21 multi-point games are already tied for the third-most in the NHL by a defenseman over the last five seasons, four shy of passing San Jose’s Brent Burns’ mark of 24 in 2015-16. Of his 21 multi-point games, seven have been three-point games, which also leads defensemen. Since 1979-80, Mike Green has the most multi-point games by a Capital (24 in 2008-09).- Carlson is on pace for 97 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 pointsin a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once).- Carlson is already six points shy of surpassing his career high set last season (13g, 57a), and he’s now just 17 points shy of settingthe franchise record for the most points in a season by a defenseman.
