a2012-13 Washington Mens Basketball Husky Notes

UW Leads Division I With Most All-Time Wins At Their Home ArenaWashington has

928 wins inside of Hec Edmundson Pavilion, the most by any Division I team at its cur-

rent home arena. The Huskies started playing in their arena on Dec. 27, 1927 and have amassed 100 morevictories than No. 2 on the list, Pennsylvania.

Friendly Confines Of HomeLosing at Alaska Airlines Arena in Hec Edmundson Pavilion is rare under coach Lorenzo Romars watch. In11 years with Romar at the helm, UW is 154-32 (.828) overall at home, 82-9 (.901) in non-conferencegames.UW was 18-2 at home in 2012, the 5th time under Romar that they have reached at least 17 winsat home. The Huskies have won 15+ at home 18 times overall, but only two other times in the last 60 yearsoutside the Romar era.The Huskies won a school record 32 straight non-conference games at Alaska AirlinesArena, dating back to a 72-71 home loss on March 14, 2008 in the College Basketball Invitational to Val-paraiso, before South Dakota State beat them on Dec. 18, 2011.

cox is 7th in UW history making 40.5% of his careerattempts. Suggs is tied for 8th all-time in UW historyat 39.7%.

Reverse Trend in ReboundingWashington has finished first in the conference in re-bounding four-straight years, six of the last eight andhas finished first or second in each of the last eightseasons. If they are going to continue that trend, theHuskies are going to have to hit the glass in monumen-tal proportions. So far this season, they are 10th in thePac-12 in rebounding with 36.6 per game, which cur-rently represents their lowest average since 2004. Thebiggest culprit in the reverse trend is that UW is last inthe league with 23.6 defensive rebounds per game andthey are only grabbing 66.6% of the rebounds whenthe other team is on offense.

Wilcox Diversifying His GameEveryone knows C.J. Wilcox can shoot from the out-side. Entering the season, statistically speaking, it waseasy to tell he prefered to fire away from outside the3-point line. Entering the year, 56% of his field goalmakes came from behind the 3-point arc, while 61%of his FG attempts were 3-pointers. He has diversifiedhis game this year, according to the stats. So far in hisjunior season, of Wilcoxs field goal makes, just 39%have come from beyond 3-point range and 44% of hisattempts are 3-pointers. Despite moving closer to therim, his scoring average has gone up and so has hisfield goal percentage. He is 47.0% this year after en-

tering the season as a 43% career shooter.

Seferian-Jenkins Sticks To FootballAustin Seferian-Jenkins has decided to not playbasketball this season, it was announced on Jan. 2.The record-setting tight end for the Husky footballteam played in 17 games last season as a freshmanfor the UW basketball team. He averaged 1.1 pointsand 2.1 rebounds in 7.2 minutes per game. The Hus-kies were 13-4 with ASJ on the squad. Through twoseasons on the football field he owns Washingtonscareer tight-end marks with 110 catches, 1,388 yardsreceiving, and 13 touchdown catches

Who Are These Guys?THREE-HEADED MONSTER: The Huskies backcourtis one of the strengths of the squad. The Huskies havetalent, size and experience at the position thanks inlarge part to the trio of senior captains Abdul Gaddyand Scott Suggs and junior C.J. Wilcox. Gaddy isthe Pac-12s leading active player in assists, Wilcoxwas honorable mention All-Pac-12 and ranks third inUW history in 3-point makes, and Suggs, a 41% career3-point shooter, returns from a broken foot that costhim all of last season.

CENTER OF DEFENSE: Returning to man the middlefor the Huskies is 7-foot senior Aziz NDiaye. The Da-kar, Senegal native was a member of the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team as a junior and is up to 5th all-time onthe UW list for career blocks. The career 57% shooterscored was the teams top rebounder grabbing 7.3 pergame. NDiaye, the third player to stand 7-feet or tallerin the Romar era, is especially rejuvenated this seasonafter spending part of the summer in his native Sen-egal with his teammates and family.

    High Post Offense

Washington installed a half-court high-post offense thisyear and has been working on the new system since thesummer. Luckily for the Huskies, they had 10 extra practices to prepare for their summer foreign tour. LorenzoRomar learned the high-post offense while an assistanunder Jim Harrick at UCLA and has implemented thestyle at his previous coaching stops of Pepperdine andSaint Louis. The Huskies will still run the floor at everyopportunity as evidenced by their 85 points scored in the

Romars tenure to equal UCLA for the most among Pac-12 schools. Eight Huskies were on NBA rosters at thestart of the year:Will Conroy (T-Wolves/cut), SpencerHawes (76ers), Quincy Pondexter (Memphis), NateRobinson (Chicago), Terrence Ross (Toronto), Bran-don Roy (T-Wolves), Isaiah Thomas (Kings) and Tony

    Wroten (Memphis).

    World Travelers

The Huskies embarked on a two-week trip this summerto Europe and Africa that saw them visit Barcelona,Spain; Nice France; Monaco; Paris, France; and Dakar,Senegal. During their foreign tour, the Huskies playedsix games and went 3-3 against professional teams.Scott Suggs and Abdul Gaddy led the team with 13.5ppg, while C.J. Wilcox was third with 13.2 ppg. Butmore importantly, the team had many experiences thatwill stay with them for their entire lives. While on thetrip, the team saw such sites as the Eiffel Tower, TheLouvre, the Princes Palace in Monaco, Fraggonard Per-fume Factory; Sagrada Familia, Parc Guell and the 1992Olympic sites in Barcelona, Spain. They wrapped uptheir trip with three days in Dakar, Senegal.

    Dawgs Visit Africa

The Huskies capped their foreign tour this summer byspending three day in Dakar, Senegal. While in Africa, the team had a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dakar, thecapital of Senegal, is home to senior Aziz NDiaye. Hereturned home for the first time in two years and servedas host, ambassador and translator during the trip. Theteam started their Africa leg with a visit to the BandiaAnimal Reserve, followed by a stop at the SEEDS Acad-emy, where NDiaye got his basketball start. NDiayeled the Huskies as they ran a clinic for the youngermembers of the academy. The next day the team joinedNDiaye on a visit to his home where they saw the homein which NDiaye grew up. His mom cooked NDiayesfavorite meal -- fish and rice -- for the whole team. Laterthat evening the Huskies were scheduled to play DakarUniversity, but a severe rainstorm flooded the court andmade the venue unplayable. On the final day, the teamvisited Goree Island, a slave-trading post that served asthe last stop for millions of African slaves before theywere shipped off to Europe and the Americas.

Sons Of SonicsShawn Kemp Jr. is not the first Husky player to comefrom NBA lineage -- specifically sons of Seattle Son-ics. Through the years, four other Huskies had dads thatspent portions of their NBA careers playing for the Son-ics. Here is a look at the list:

    Son (Years a Husky) Dad (Yrs a Sonics)Shawn Kemp, Jr. (2012-) Shawn (1989-97)Marlon Shelton (1999-2003) Lonnie (1978-82)Bryan Brown (1998-2001) Fred (1971-84)Mike Westphal (1999-2000) Paul (1980-81)Donald Watts (1996-99) Slick (1974-78)

Stuck In Neutral?Washington is 6-10 in regular season neutral sitegames (2-10 in the last 12) during Lorenzo Romars11-year tenure at the school. But, when it counts dur-ing the post-season, the Huskies are much better onneutral site courts. The Huskies are 13-6 under Romarat the Pac-12 Tournament and have won three tourna-ment championships. UW is 8-6 on neutral sites in theNCAA tournament and have made three Sweet 16 ap-

pearances. The Huskies went 0-1 at MSG during theNIT. Overall, UW was 0-4 on neutral courts last seasonand have lost their last five neutral site games.

Filling Up Alaska Airlines ArenaDespite Alaska Airlines Arena (10,000) being the sec-ond smallest Pac-12 Conference home in regards tocapacity, Washington was second in the conference inattendance last season. The Huskies averaged 9,294fans per game in the regular season (8,785 includingNIT) and trailed only Arizona, which averaged 13,906fans at the McKale Center (14,545) each game. Cal wasthird, drawing 8,532 fans at Haas Pavilion (11,877).

    Reviewing 2012

Romar Leads UW To Another His-

    toric Season

Once again, Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar led the Hus-kies to unchartered territory in 2011-12. The list is longof accomplishments that helps solidify Washington asone of the elite college basketball programs in the na-tion. Here is a quick overview of some of the programsaccomplishments during the year: For the first time in school history, the Huskies havewon 20 or more games in four-straight seasons. Washington has amassed 100 wins over the last fourseasons, the first time in program history they have

reached the century mark in a four-year span. The Huskies won the Pac-12 regular season title witha 14-4 record, their 23rd conference title since 1911 --18 of those crowns are outright -- but only two of thosehave come in the last 58 years (2009 & 2012). Fourteen conference wins equals the 4th most inteam history and just the 9th time the Huskies haveacheived that many league victories. UW advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 NIT Tour-nament, the furthest they have advanced in the post-season tournament and furthest they have advanced ineither the NIT or NCAAs since 1953. Tony Wroten was named Pac-12 Freshman of theYear, the fifth time in UW history they have won the

award. Wroten and Terrence Ross both earned first team All-Pac-12 honors, making UW the only team with multipleplayers on the first team in four-straight years. Returner Aziz NDiaye was a first-team member onthe 2012 Pac-12 All-Defensive team, while C.J. Wil-cox was honorable mention All-Pac-12. Lorenzo Ro-mar was conference Coach of the Year for a third time. The Huskies enter the year with more wins in theircurrent arena (921) than any other school. Their total isover 100 more than second-place Penn.
