The Volunteer offense was on full display as it scored a total of 40 runs in the three wins over the Musketeers. UT opened up the year by cruising to a 16-6 triumph on Friday before scoring three in the ninth inning the following day to walk away with a 7-6 victory. The Big Orange then finished off the sweep with a dominant 17-1 win on Sunday. Making the team’s offensive performance even more impressive was the fact that most of it was done without preseason All-American Cody Hawn who missed the final two games of the weekend after suffering a left-shoulder sprain in the fifth inning on Friday. The Knoxville native is currently listed as day-to-day with the injury and could be back as early as next weekend. In his absence, junior outfielder P.J. Polk paced the Tennessee attack, tallying three hits in each game to hit at a blistering .750 clip while post- ing an identical on-base percentage. The 5-9 junior had nine hits in 12 at-bats and reached base in 12 of 16 plate appearances, in addition to registering a terrific 1.083 slugging percentage with five singles and four doubles. He also collected a team-high seven runs, two RBIs, a pair of stolen bases, three walks, a sacrifice fly and an outfield assist. On the mound, the Tennessee bullpen was simply fantastic as 10 different pitchers were called upon to throw 12.2 innings, allowing just nine hits and four runs for a combined 2.84 ERA with six strikeouts and just four walks. SCOUTING OREGON STATE Oregon State opened up its season this past weekend in the Aloha State where it picked up three wins in a four-game set with host Hawai’i. Junior third baseman Stefan Romero paced the team with a pair of home runs to increase his career total to eight, which marks the most of any player on the team’s roster. OSU wel- comes back 21 letterwinners from last season, including 10 pitchers, all of whom started at one point during the 2009 campaign. The Beavers have, arguably, the deepest pitching staff in the nation this season, led by sophomore Sam Gaviglio who finished last season tied for second in the Pac-10 with 10 wins. Oregon State finished with a 37-19 record in 2009 after falling in the Fort Worth Regional championship game against TCU. One of the strongest programs in college baseball throughout the last decade, the Beavers are ranked in every major poll, coming in at No. 10 in the Collegiate Baseball poll, in addition to earning ratings of No. 20 and 25 from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Baseball America, respectively. SERIES HISTORY Tennessee and Oregon State will square off for the second consecutive season after splitting a pair of games in Knoxville last season in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Volunteers rallied to score two in the bottom of the ninth in the first contest, getting a game-winning single from Josh Liles. The third game in the series was cancelled due to snow. TODD RALEIGHThird SeasonWestern Carolina, 1991Record at UT: 56-58 (.491)Career Record: 313-267 (.540)

Tennessee head coach Todd Raleigh is in his second season at Tennessee after guiding his alma mater, Western Carolina, for eight seasons.

While at Tennessee, Raleigh has had seven players drafted, including two in 2008 and five more in 2009, highlighted by first-round pick Kentrail Davis. In 18 seasons as a collegiate coach, Raleigh has now produced a total of 39 MLB draft picks and

56 professional players. That number will undoubtedly continue to grow as 2009 third-round selection Bryan Morgado made the decision to return to Knoxville for a chance to continue to grow under Raleigh’s leadership during his junior campaign.

During his tenure in Cullowhee, Raleigh’s clubs won two regular-season Southern Conference champion-ships, one Southern Conference tournament title, turned in five top-three league finishes and made a pair of NCAA Regional appearances—reaching the Regional final both times.

His 2007 WCU team posted a winning record against teams in the top 35 of the RPI and earned a rare mid-major at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The Catamounts were touted by ESPN’s Kyle Peterson as featuring an “SEC-style offense.”

In 18 collegiate seasons, Raleigh has coached 56 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including 13 players who were drafted in the top-10 rounds and seven who have advanced onto Major League rosters.

In those 18 seasons as a collegiate assistant or head coach, Raleigh’s teams have finished third or better in their respective league 12 times (67 percent).

Raleigh and his wife, Stephanie, have three children: Cal (12), Emma Grace (10) and Carley (3).

Turn up The VOLume “Tennessee has everything. It’s the state

school, the flagship school. We can recruit this state, and there are enough good players in this state to win a national championship. We’ve got to build this program from the inside out, and that’s what we plan on doing.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“Xavier has a good program-- they didn’t lost three in a row at all last season. That was a great sweep for us. It’s important for our guys to learn how to play all three days. Some people think some of these games are automatic--but they aren’t at all. Look around the SEC (last) week-end and a lot of teams just won two of three. We have some young guys but we have some with a lot of experience, too. Sweeping this series definitely gives us a lot of confidence.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“I think we’ve done a good job of building a foundation that we need to build, but obvi-ously, with that comes the end product. The end product for us is winning some games, and I think we’re poised to do that. I think what we had to do was go through the right process and we have gone through those proper channels. I feel excited about this season. We’ve got a tremendous team. We’re more athletic, more physical, we’re deeper, we’re better. You com-bine that with the way we ended last year, the momentum we had, I feel like we’re going to have a great year, I really do.”

— Head Coach Todd Raleigh

“The renovations that have been made to the stadium are unbelievable. It’s a place we can call home now. Coming to the park every day, I feel really at home and proud to be a part of this team and this university. This is probably the most talented team I’ve been a part of at Tennessee. Our depth is just tremendous and everywhere on the field is a strong point.”

— Junior Catcher Blake Forsythe

“I’ve been a fan my entire life and I will be even when I leave this university. It’s always going to be home to me. No matter if I’m here playing or watching younger guys several years down the road, I will always want to see UT do well and hopefully we can really turn it around and become one of the premier programs in the country, starting this year.”

A 2005 loss to Clemson which started at home, was halted, and then concluded on a different date on the road is not included in Raleigh’s home-away-neutral record.

u Raleigh led an offensive juggernaut in 2007 that ranked fifth nationally in runs per game (8.4), sixth nationally in home runs per game (1.4), scoring (8.4) and slugging percentage (.517), seventh in doubles per game (2.39) and 11th in batting average (.323).

u Raleigh’s 2008 UT squad hit 67 home runs in just 56 games, the fifth-highest single-season total in program history.

u The Vols improved upon that number in Raleigh’s second season, blasting out 87 home runs in 55 games, good for the second-best single-season total in UT history.

u Despite fielding a lineup that regularly included six or more underclassmen in 2009, UT improved its RPI by 31 positions from the previous season, moving from 89 to 58.

u Under Raleigh’s guidance, first-year Vol Cody Hawn became just the 10th player in UT history to claim the team Triple Crown with a .364 batting average, 22 home runs and 81 RBIs.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLLS

NOTEWORTHYQUICK HITSuUT has now won seven straight games, dating

back to a victory over Middle Tennessee State last season. That stands one win shy of tying the lon-gest winning-streak during Todd Raleigh’s tenure in Knoxville (3/7/08-3/16/08).uUT scored 40 runs in its season-opening sweep

over Xavier, the most since it tallied 47 in a three-game set against Radford in 2005.uThe UT bullpen had 10 pitchers combine to

throw 12.2 innings in the opening weekend, allow-ing just nine hits and four runs for a combined 2.84 ERA with six strikeouts and just four walks.

POLK CLAIMS INITIAL SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS OF 2010 SEASON

After leading Tennessee to its first season-open-ing series sweep since 2004 with a trio of three-hit performances, junior outfielder P.J. Polk was named the first Southeastern Conference Player of the Week of the 2010 campaign. The Murfreesboro, Tenn., native was 9-for-12 on the weekend, good for a stellar .750 batting average.

In addition to his nine hits, Polk also walked three times to allow him to reach base safely in 12 of his 16 plate appearances. The 5-9 speedster posted a tremendous 1.083 slugging percentage with four doubles and five singles, while also adding a pair of stolen bases, two RBIs, a sacrifice fly, as assist from his position in left field and a team-high seven runs.

The award is the second of Polk’s career, as he also earned the honors in week nine last season after hit-ting for a .455 average in the Volunteers’ series win on the road against top-ranked LSU.

HAWN DAY-TO-DAYUT junior Cody Hawn is currently day-to-day after

suffering a sprained le shoulder in the fifth inning of UT’s 16-6 triumph over Xavier on Fri., Feb. 19. The injury occurred on a pick-off play while he was playing first base.

UT LOOKS TO CONTINUE BUILDING OFF STRONG FINISH TO 2009 CAMPAIGN

The Tennessee baseball team started the 2010 campaign right where it left off in 2009, sweeping Xavier after finishing last season with four consecu-tive wins, including their first sweep over Vanderbilt in Nashville since the two teams started playing three-game conference series in 1976.

The three victories over the Musketeers last week-

end increased the Volunteers’ winning streak to seven dating back to a 5-4 (11 inn.) triumph over Middle Tennessee State on May 12 of last year. The seven consecutive victories stand one short of the longest winning streak in Todd Raleigh’s Tennessee tenure, as his squad won eight straight from March 5-16 in 2008, including series sweeps over Eastern Michigan and LSU.

MORGADO RETURNS FOR JUNIOR SEASON; BACK IN THE ROTATION

A third-round pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2009, UT junior Bryan Morgado is one of just three college players drafted in the first three rounds to return to school, joining Kentucky’s James Paxton and Arizona State pitcher Josh Spence.

In 2009, the Miami, Fla., native started five games and made 15 appearances out of the bullpen for the Volunteers. He finished the year with a 4-2 record, a 6.36 ERA and two saves, while striking out a team high 75 batters in 52 1/3 innings.

The 6-3 left-hander has returned to the Tennessee rotation as its Friday night starter in 2010 after spending most of his sophomore campaign pitch-ing out of the bullpen.

UT SCHEDULE RANKED AS 16TH MOST DIFFICULT BY BOYDSWORLD.COM

With a schedule that features a total of 34 games against teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year, the University of Tennessee baseball schedule has been rated as the 16th-most difficult among 301 NCAA Division I teams, according to BoydsWorld.com.

The Volunteers’ schedule ranks as the third-hard-

est in the Southeastern Conference, behind only Georgia (No. 8) and Arkansas (No. 15).

BoydsWorld.com is a comprehensive college base-ball ratings source with up-to-date RPI, strength-of-schedule and NCAA-leading statistics calculated throughout the season.

VOLS NAME CAPTAINS FOR 2010 SEASONThe Tennessee baseball team announced

Wednesday that juniors Blake Forsythe, Josh Liles, Bryan Morgado and Rob Catapano will serve the squad’s captains for the 2010 campaign.

SUMMER LEAGUE SUCCESS FOR VOLSAfter a strong finish to the 2009 season, a numbe

of Vols were able to carry that momentum over into summer league action where they put their talents on full display.

Junior Bryan Morgado spent his summer helping to lead the Bourne Braves to their first-ever league championship in the prestigious Cape Cod League. In the regular season portion of the team’s sched-ule, he threw 32.1 innings, amassing a 2-1 record with a 3.06 ERA in eight appearances, including six starts.

While Morgado was setting down hitters in Cape Cod, UT sophomore Steven Gruver was dominating the Northwoods League, earning postseason all-star honors. As the undisputed ace of the La Crosse Loggers pitching staff, Gruver put together a stellar 7-1 record and 2.23 ERA in 14 appearances, while leading his team to the championship series.

FORSYTHE SPENDS SUMMER WITH USA COLLEGIATE NATIONAL TEAM

Following a breakout season in 2009, junior catcher Blake Forsythe completed a stint with the USA Collegiate Baseball National Team this summer, where he hit at a .293 clip with a pair of home runs and nine RBIs. He also walked 21 times in as many games, en route to an impressive .500 on-base per-centage. He is the 17th Vol to have either played for or been invited to try out for Team USA.

NEW FACES IN THE CROWDThe Volunteers have welcomed 14 newcomers

to Rocky Top this season. Highlighting the group are four freshmen that heard their name called in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. The class includes a total of nine freshmen, two transfers and three junior college players.

CATAPANO BRINGS CWS EXPERIENCEJunior left-handed pitcher Rob Catapano brings an

element to this year’s team that no other Volunteer can claim: experience playing in the College World Series.

The 6-0 Knoxville native is donning the Orange and White for the first time in 2010 after sitting out a season after transferring from North Carolina. During his time as a Tar Heel, Catapano amassed a 5-1 record and 3.42 ERA in 46 appearances, includ-ing seven starts.

North Carolina advanced to the College World Series in both of his seasons in Chapel Hill. Catapano twirled 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against Rice, as well as a a third of an inning versus Oregon State in the squad’s first go-around and another perfect inning against Fresno State the following year.

NEW FACES ON THE COACHING STAFFIn addition to the 14 new players, Tennessee

also welcomes a trio of new coaches in pitching coach Jason Beverlin, volunteer assistant Bill Currier and strength and conditioning coach Herman Demmink. Former volunteer assistant Nate Headley also moved into a full-time position as the team’s director of operations during the offseason.

HOMEGROWN TALENT PLENTIFUL ON TENNES-SEE ROSTER

Tennessee’s roster includes 16 players from the state of Tennessee (44 percent of the roster). Four Vols are from Knox County and one is from Hamilton County (Chattanooga), while five other hail from West Tennessee and six are from Middle Tennessee.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHINGAccording to freshman outfielder Chris Fritts, the

sacrifice bunt he laid down in the third inning of UT’s 17-1 win over Xavier on Sun., Feb. 21, was the first of his life, including high school and summer league ball.

“I didn’t even really think about it until I got back to the dugout and all of the guys were giving me high-fives,” Fritts said. “Bunting was not one of my strong points when I got here, but I’ve done a lot of extra work before practices to get better at it, so it felt good to get that first one down.”

SECOND PHASE OF RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY AT LINDSEY NELSON STADIUM

The second of four phases of renovations is near-ing completion at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Crews have already finished adding a new club area and MVP seating behind home plate that will allow fans to sit closer to the field. Permanent chair-back seating has also been added throughout the entire main grandstand, while the stadium’s exterior has been faced with brick. In addition, the visitor’s locker room behind the third-base dugout has been renovated and a a new batting cage facility, approximately 60 yards in length, will be added down the right-field line.

The first phase, complete prior to the 2009 season, included more than $4 million worth of improve-ments, primarily to player development areas. Work was finished on a team clubhouse that features a state-of-the art locker room, training room and coaches’ office complex. Phase I also included the addition of nearly 1,000 seats down the right-field line, as well as a party plaza, and saw the field sur-face replaced.

Phase three will include the construction of a new press box and luxury suites, while the fourth and final phase will add permanent stands down the left-field line.

BASEBALL HOSTS 18TH ANNUAL LEADOFF BAN-QUET; ANNOUNCES ALL-DECADE TEAMS

Former University of Tennessee standouts James Adkins and Mike Lincoln joined fellow former Vols

and current professional players J.P. Arencibia, Chase Headley and Luke Hochevar as part of the speaker panel featured at the 18th Annual Tennessee Baseball Leadoff Banquet on Feb. 5 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

The team also announced the 2000-09 All-Decade first and second teams at the banquet. The two teams include a total of 30 players, including 19 that played in the College World Series and 12 that claimed All-American honors during their time at Rocky Top.

SEC COACHES PICK VOLS TO FINISH SIXTH IN PRESEASON POLL

Tennessee was picked to finish sixth in the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division, as deter-mined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches, the conference office announced earlier this week. LSU was predicted to repeat as the 2010 SEC cham-pions.

In the overall SEC Champion vote, LSU received five of a possible 11 votes. Florida received four votes while Arkansas had three. In addition to pick-ing a preseason SEC champion, the league’s head coaches voted a predicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions.

In the Eastern Division, Florida was the favorite with 64 of a possible 66 points. South Carolina came in second with 52 points and Georgia third with 42. Tennessee finished with a total of 19 points in the poll. LSU was named the favorite in the Western Division with a total of 63 points. Arkansas was sec-ond with 59, while Ole Miss, who shared the overall title last season with LSU, finished third with 39.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

VOLUNTEERS ON THE TUBEThe Volunteer baseball team will be featured in

a total of seven televised games in 2010. In addi-tion, 46 of the squad’s 56 regular-season games are scheduled for broadcast locally on WNML “The Sports Animal” (AM 990, FM 99.1 and 99.3), with vet-eran play-by-play man John Wilkerson on the call. ESPN360.com will stream each television broadcast live online except for UT’s ESPNU contest against Kentucky on April 30.

The seven televised contests are part of the SEC’s 2010 baseball television schedule, the first under a new 15-year contract with ESPN. The regular-season package will include 46 broadcasts in 2010, up from eight games in 2009. In addition, all games from the 2010 SEC Tournament will continue to be broad-cast, with the championship game airing nationally on ESPN2.

BASEBALL PARTICIPATES IN LIGHT THE NIGHT WALK, RAISES MORE THAN $9,500 FOR CANCER RESEARCH

For the third consecutive year, the University of Tennessee baseball team participated in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk at Circle Park on the UT campus this past November. The Volunteers exceeded their fundrais-ing goal, raising $9,509 to increase their three-year total to more than $22,000 in support of research into the treatment and prevention of cancer.
