Who makes the rules? The Utah Wildlie Board passes the rules

and laws summarized in this guidebook.

There are seven board members, and

each serves a six-year term. Appointed by the

governor, board members are not Division

    employees.

The Divisions director serves as the

boards executive secretary but does not have

    a vote on wildlie policies.

Beore board members make changes towildlie rules, they listen to recommendations

rom Division biologists. They also receive

input rom the public and various interest

groups via the regional advisory council (RAC)

    process.

I you have eedback or suggestions or

CHANGES TO THE DEER HUNTStarting in 2012, Utahs general-season deer

hunt will take place in 30 units instead o ve

regions. Its a big change, and we know you have

questions about how its going to work.To answer your questions, weve put together

    some easy-to-use online resources, including

a Q&A document and detailed maps. You can

nd these tools at wildlie.utah.gov. Weve also

printed a large map o all the units, which will be

available at any Division oce or license agent

    location, starting in early January.

Beore the big game application period openson Feb. 1, we will post additional inormation you

can use in selecting a unit. This inormation will

likely include 2011 harvest data, historic permit

allocations and the latest buck-to-doe ratios on

the 30 units. All o these resources may be useul

as you research your hunt and decide which unitsto apply or.

The switch to 30 units has also prompted

changes to various Division programs, particularly

the Dedicated Hunter Program (see the article

on page 24). This guidebook and the Divisions

website are your best resources or understanding

those changes and navigating the 2012 big game

application period. For the latest inormation, please visit
