CENTRAL FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF John Zamberlin (Head Coach, 1st Year)

John Zambertin, who played seven seasons in the NFL with the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, begins his first season as Central Washington University's head football coach this fall .

Zamberlin, 41, replaces Jeff Zenisek, who resigned in January to rejoin former CWU head coach Mike Dunbar, who was named the new head coach at Northern Iowa.

Zamberlin has nine years experience as a NCAA Division 1 assistant, however, this is his first head coaching job at any level.

For the past two seasons, he was the defensive coordinator at the University of Richmond. He also previous coached at Eastern Washington University (1992-94) and at the University of Massachusetts (1987-90).

Last year Zambertin's defensive unit ranked 12th nationally among NCAA Division 1 schools in total defense.

"We will play hard, tough disciplined football ," Zamberlin, who will also coach CWU's inside linebackers, said. "My basic philosophy is to teach an aggressive attacking style of football."

Prior to embarking upon a coaching career, Zamberlin played linebacker for four seasons with New England (1979-82) and three seasons with Kansas City (1983-85).

He is a 1979 graduate of Pacific Lutheran. At PLU, he was a four-year letterman in both football and baseball. He was selected to the Associated Press small-college All-American football team and was named a NAIA AllAmerican in 1978.

During his collegiate career he had 184 unassisted tackles, 10 interceptions and six quarterback sacks. Three times he was named all-conference and all-district. His number 56 is the only retired PLU football jersey.

In baseball, he was a two-time all-conference outfielder. Zamberlin, who was inducted into PLU's Hall-of-Fame in 1996, was se

lected in the fifth round of the 1979 NFL draft by New England. Coincidentally, Zambertin began his collegiate coaching career at Massa

chusetts in 1987 when Dunbar left that school to return to CWU to take over as head coach.

"Mike recommended me for that job," said Zambertin, who played for Dunbar when he was an assistant at PLU.

Zambertin is a native of Tacoma. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1974. At Wilson, he earned four letters each in football and baseball. He earned honorable mention All-City honors in football and was a first team selection in baseball.

Misc: Born 2-13-56 at Tacoma .. . Married Mary Ellen Wolf on June 28, 1997. Mary Ellen previously was an assistant trainer at the University of Richmond. Has two children by previous marriage (daughter Megan, 12, and son Kyle, 8).

He was named the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach prior to the beginning of the 1996 season. Picha replaced Charles Chandler on the full-time staff. He also replaced Chandler as CWU's men's and women's track-and-field coach.

Picha led CWU's men to the 1995 Pacific Northwest Athletic Conference track-and-field title and a 17th place finish in the NAIA National meet and was selected the PNWAC Men's Coach-of-the-Year.

Last spring both his men's and women's track squads placed second in the conference meet . His men's squad also finished 23rd in the NAIA national meet.

Picha previously served as an assistant track-andfield coach for three seasons, first during the 1990 and 1991 campaigns and then again in 1993. He was in charge of the throwing events.

The CWU coach first joined the football coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 1988. In 1988 and 1989, he coached the tight ends. He then coached the defensive line in 1990,-1992 and 1993.

Neutral Sites: CWU 1-0, SFU 0-1.

Last Week's Results: Western Oregon 14 at Southern Oregon 22; Simon Fraser 12 at Cal Poly- SLO 52; Western Washington 45 at Humboldt State 7. (Central Washing1on was idle).

This Saturday's Schedule: Western Washington at UC-Davis, 7 p.m.; Southern Oregon at Central Washington, 1 :30 p.m.; Humboldt State at Simon Fraser, 1 p.m. (Western Oregon is idle).

While it is probably too early to order championship rings, the winner of today's Central Washington - Southern Oregon game will grab the early lead in the Columbia Football Association race.

The game matches the only two teams left in the conference without a league loss. It is also CWU's annual Homecoming Game - and its only home contest in the entire month of October.

Following the contest, the 'Cats take the road for two weeks before returning home Nov. 8 to host arch-rival Western Washington.

First-year head coach John Zamberlin doesn't look at this contest as a "championship" game. "The way we look at it is we have five games left and we need to win all five (to reach the NAIA playoffs)," Zamberlin said.

CWU brings a 2-2 record - and a two-game losing streak into the contest. Southern Oregon is 3-1 and has won three straight, its longest win streak since 1994.

After opening the season with a home loss to Linfield, the Raiders have won three, including a 22-14 victory over 12th ranked and previously unbeaten Western Oregon last Saturday in Ashland.

Southern Oregon has the CFA's best rushing attack, averaging 261 .8 yards per game. It features perhaps the two best backs in the CFA.

A year ago, Casey Jackson (5-8, 175, Jr.) led the CFA in rushing with 1,083 yards and 10 touchdowns. Jackson missed the first three games this fall with a herniated disk, but returned last Saturday to rush for 71 yards on 15 carries.

Southern Oregon's running attack, however, did not miss a beat as Griff Yates (6-0, 180, So.) is running away with this year's league rushing crown.

Yates is on a Northwest small-college record pace, averaging 194.8 yards per game, including a school-record 244 yards in Saturday's win over West

. ern Oregon. "He is a very talented running back," Zamberlin said after watching him on

film. "He runs hard and he breaks a lot of tackles."

Stopping the SOU running game (the Raiders rank last in the CFA in passing) is the No. 1 concern for Zamberlin and defensive coordinator John Graham.

On offense, Zamberlin hopes his team can develop a little more consistency than they've shown in their first four games.

Central ranks second in the CFA in total offense (381.3) behind Southern Oregon, but the 'Cats have converted on just 27.8 percent of their thirddown opportunities and have rushed for only 11 o total yards in their last two outings.

CWU had only 44 yards three weeks ago against Willamette and 66 rushing yards two weeks ago against Cal - Davis. The passing game also produced just 160 yards against UC-Davis and quarterbacks Casey Jacox (6-2, 205, Jr., Renton - Kentridge) and Sean McCoy (6-3, 215, Jr., Everett) combined to complete only 11 of 36 passes for 160 yards.

Jacox, however, still leads the CFA in passing and total offense and ranks fifth nationally in passing (268.3) and eighth in total offense (254.8).

Wide receiver Tony Frank (6-0, 190, Sr., Clallam Bay- WWCC) leads the CFA in receiving with 21 catches for 403 yards and four touchdowns. Ian Tyrrell (5-8, 21 O, Fr., Yakima - Davis) is the CFA punt leader and ranks eighth nationally with a 40.7 average.

Defensively, Southern Oregon ranks second in the CFA allowing 271.0 yards per game. Tackles Jon Chamberlin (6-4, 255, Sr.) and Gerald Breymann (6-3, 255, Jr.) rank second (11-48) and third (8 1/5 - 49) in the CFAin tackles for losses.

CWU is fifth in the conference in defense, allowing 386.8 yards per game. Linebacker Ryan Sawyer (6-3, 230, So., Kent - Kent-Meridian) is CWU's tackle for loss leader with six. John Hallead (5-11, 205, Fr., Ellensburg) is the takeaway leader with three, including two interceptions.

THE COACHES: Jeff Olson, a 1982 graduate of Southern Oregon, has spent his entire coaching career at his alma mater. He is in his 16th season and his second as the interim head coach. Next year he will relinquish the head reins to legendary Ashland High School coach Jim Nagel. Olson has a 7-6 career mark, including a 3-1 record this season .... . John Zamberlin (Pacific Lutheran, 1979) is in his first season at CWU after spending nine seasons as an assistant at Massachusetts ( 1987-90), Eastern Washington ( 1992-94) and Richmond (1995-96). Zamberlin previously played seven seasons in the NFL with New England (1979-82) and Kansas City (1983-85). Zamberlin replaced Jeff Zenisek, who is now an assistant at Northern Iowa under former CWU head coach Mike Dunbar. In five seasons, Zenisek compiled a record of 35-17-1.

LAST YEAR/SERIES: Central, which didn't commit a turnover, scored 28 fourth-quarter points to break open a fairly close game and defeat the Raiders 59-34. The Wildcats finished with a season-high 604 yards in total

offense, including 403 passing as quarterback Ryan Fournier completed 27 of 42 for a career-high 373 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Dan Murphy (6-2, 215, So., Royal City) netted 114 yards on 19 rushes and Julian Hamm (5-9, 178, So., Des Moines - Mt. Rainier) had 66 yards on 13 rushes. Three receivers had 100-yard games - Kenny Russaw (8-113 including a school-record tying four touchdowns), Josh Woodard (8-100 and two touchdowns) and Tony Frank (4-100). Casey Jackson ran for 112 yards as the Raiders piled up 474 yards, including 254 on the ground. Tommy Selden had 213 all-purpose yards, 70 rushing, 119 on kickoff returns and 24 on two punt returns ... The Wildcats lead the all-time series 19-6 and have dominated the recent series though the Raiders won what was probably the most important game in the series, a 1987 first-round NAIA Division 1 playoff game. CWU has won six straight since that loss outscoring Southern Oregon 222-102, including 106-56 in the past two contests. CWU has won the last 10 regular-season encounters since the Raiders cost the 'Cats a post-season berth with a 32-8 win in the final game of the 1982 season.

MORE ABOUT THE RAIDERS: Yates has rushed for 158, 194, 183 and 244 yards in his four games. The Northwest small-college record for most rushing yards per game in a singleseason is 172.9 by Bill Volk of Western Oregon in 1994. Records date back to 1969 . .. Yates ranks second in the CFA and third in the Northwest in total offense. The highest total offense finish in that category by a non-quarterback was eighth by Volk in 1994 ..

tionally.

MORE ABOUT THE WILDCATS: Last week's bye was the first mid-season off-week for the Wildcats since 1965. That year after losing to Whitworth 18-0 on Oct. 9, the Wildcats didn't play again until Oct. 23 when they lost to Eastern Washington 20-7. CWU took advantage of the bye to shorten up practices a bit and spend some additional time on fundamentals, Zamberlin said. . .. The bye came at an opportune time because of injuries CWU sustained in their losses to Willamette and UC-Davis. At one point in the UC-Davis game, all three CWU starting linebackers and four of the six originally listed on the two-deeps the week previous were not available because of injuries .... .Wide receiver Tony Frank not only leads the CFA in catches per game, but he is also the CFA leader in yards per catch, averaging 19.2. Frank has scored one touchdown in all four of CWU's games this fall. Josh Woodard, who has caught 16 passes for 197 yards, has 107 c:areer catches for 1,238 yards.

. Chamberlin shared the CFA Defensive Player-of-the-Week award last week with Western Washington defensive back Mike Perez. Chamberlin had 12 tackles, including two quarterback sacks for losses of five yards and two other tackles for losses of three yards. · He leads the Raiders in total tackles with 30. JennerYriarte (5-10, 180, So.) leads SOU and is tied for the CFA lead with three pass interceptions . . . In addition to leading the CFA in total offense and rushing offense, the Raiders also lead the league in rushing defense (53.8) and scoring defense (14.5) .. . Yates and Tommy Selden (5-6, 155, Sr.) rank 1-2 in all-purpose running averaging 202.0 and 160.0 yards per game. Yates is also the scoring leader (12.0) and Selden leads in kickoff returns (33.6) and ranks third na-
