The Walpole Yacht Club on the

spectacular Nornalup inlet hosted the

2019 ‘In the Trees’ Regatta over the

Labour Day long weekend. A flotilla

of 148 boats, from the dizzyingly fast

flying moths to traditional wooden

sailing craft, raced in ten divisions

over two days. Under a sunny sky and

ideal wind conditions, sailors ranging

in age from eight to eighty-one put

their skills to the test.

and the two heats were completed in

rapid succession. Onlookers watched

from vantage points around the inlet or

on the water from the comfort of the

WOW Wilderness cruise boat.

The schedule for Day Two was changed somewhat from previous years in that the three heats were run back - to - back rather than with a break for lunch. The day began in windless conditions and the prospect of the day’s sailing being cancelled. The wind then shifted to possibly every point on the compass and kept the course setters occupied moving course markers until a brisk southerly finally set in and racing was able to commence. With the late start and more challenging conditions than Day One, sailors had their stamina tested. By the time the three heats were over, boats had been on the water for over five hours and many sailors were more than ready for some lunch and a rest.

As is customary, the prize presentation ceremony filled the Walpole Recreation Centre on Sunday evening where the mood was festive. The contribution to sailing in Western Australia made by the Walpole Yacht Club was honoured by the president of Yachting Western Australia, Rob Rooke, who issued the challenge to clubs everywhere to include more girls and women in their sailing.

Congratulations to all competitors, staff and the volunteers without whose valuable contributions the regatta could not have been held.

South Coast Volunteer Marine Rescue Sadly, on 23rd February, the South Coast Volunteer Marine Rescue lost the South Coast Region’s party girl, Ruth Lee.

Whilst in the care of our westernmost group she managed to jump overboard and ‘escape’. Last seen swimming towards Walpole (out of the pot into the frying pan).

So if you are boating across the beautiful south coast and come across the girl dressed in orange in the accompanying picture please take her aboard, ignore her stories of neglect and return her to a Volunteer Marine Rescue Group near you and we will make sure she never boards a hardtop NAIAD again.

The VMRWA Commander commented “She has had many adventures over the last few years although this one appears to be more than just an overnight sleepover hopefully she comes home.”

Ruth Lee is the Region’s training dummy, used to simulate rescues during training of volunteers across the region.

Farmers deserve protection

The Warren-Blackwood region is highly regarded for the

range and quality of fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. I

believe our farmers strive for excellence and are outstanding

in their care for animals. The recent ‘attack map’ published

by animal activists is an invasion on the homes and privacy

of farmers. Moral conduct should be conducted by

everyone, regardless of opinions, and our farmers deserve

the protection of Government as they go about their

legitimate business.

Royal Commission into Disability Services

I believe it is time to shine a spotlight on the disability sector.

I have met many dedicated and caring people in this

profession, and believe most organisations do the right

thing. A Royal Commission will highlight areas of need and

ensure our most vulnerable community members receive

the very best care available. When we see outcomes from

the banking and aged care enquiries, it raises questions that

need answers.

Short Stay Accommodation Inquiry

As part of this inquiry, the Parliamentary Committee has

read a number of submissions and had face-to-face

presentations. I am interested in hearing the viewpoints and

experiences of people within my electorate as the

committee deliberates the issue.

Green’s Pool

I have received a number of emails outlining reasons to

support the ban on fishing, and others arguing that fishing in

a safe environment such as Green’s Pool should be allowed.

Currently I am exploring the option of having a seasonal

fishing ban, allowing winter fishing in Green’s Pool when

high seas make fishing at other areas more dangerous.

I am interested in your viewpoints on a seasonal ban.

Mr Murphy

On the

Move Mr Mike Murphy was farewelled by the Walpole Community Resource Centre Staff, Volunteers and Committee on Thursday 26th February in the WCRC meeting room.

Chair, Kath Lymon, thanked Mr Murphy for his 15-plus years service both as past Editor of the Walpole Weekly, volunteer Committee member and most recently Tuesday volunteer. Ms Lymon thanked him for making a significant contribution to the WCRC and the community of Walpole.

General Manager, Cherie Smith, thanked him for all his assistance and for his recent grants research and resulting action plan items.

Vice Chair, Jenny Skele shared her memories of the old days, from Telecentre to Resource Centre, including tales of Pebbles and Bam Bam (the kangaroos).

Operations Manager, Linda Beard, said “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, I have learned a lot from you over the years.” Mrs Beard continued by sharing the changes his knowledge and advice have wrought, how on her first day as a Trainee, in 2010, she was his offsider - assisting with the advertising layouts and typing stories from his notes, to today as WCRC Operations Manager and relief editor of the Walpole Weekly.

Mike then shared memories of the past and amusing stories of both community and CRC activities and events. He said he and his late wife Penne both loved living here and he hopes to return for a visit from time to time.

When asked, Mike said he will most miss the trees. He came to Walpole in the 70s and decided he wanted to live here, and after 20 years he succeeded. Mike was drawn to the wide variety of forest, understorey and canopy, plus the friendly, openhearted community- “the best years were when we had a large group of young mums, organising events all the time - quiz nights, dances and fundraisers” he reminisced. At this point he shared a story about his late wife Penne delivering babies and assisting with many births in the old days.

So much history... tales of early Walpole days.....

Mike will be much missed.

WMC has now been open for eight weeks and we appreciate your support. We have had a wide variety of products in store from our very talented locals; just perfect for that special gift you are looking for. Twenty-eight of our artists and crafters have become members.

From our visitors we have had many enquiries for craft sessions and would therefore like to ascertain who would like us to venture into meeting these requests. Calmer Yarns is a very positive way to gain new skills and provides a very social and positive experience.

Peta and Kevan Thomas have kindly agreed to allow us to expand into the front portion of the café side of the building. Therefore, to hold craft sessions or classes we will set the area up with couches, chairs and a table to accommodate sewing machines.

There is a wide variety of skills in our membership base encompassing machine and hand sewing, knowledge of sewing machines, knitting, crochet, parchment/paper

The National Library of Australia is calling for applications to the 2019 Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program. The program provides grants of up to $15,000 to community groups to help preserve and manage locally-held but nationally-significant cultural heritage collections.

These collections include a range of materials from archival records, oral histories and textiles through to paintings, drawings, photographs and objects. Projects funded under the CHG program include significance assessments, preservation needs assessments, conservation activities, collection management and training workshops. Grants are provided to community organisations such as libraries, archives, museums, indigenous and multicultural groups, genealogical and historical societies from inner cities to the most remote parts of Australia.

Dr Marie-Louise Ayres, Director-General of the National Library of Australia, said “these grants assist community heritage groups to carry out the work required to document, preserve and provide access to these collections through expert guidance and financial assistance.

First time recipients are invited to Canberra to receive their grant and enhance their skills and knowledge which they can take back to their communities.”

What a day for golf. With a field of 22, Greg only narrowly took the honours from Colin by countback who won from Wayne by countback!

With the Pioneer Cup only two weeks away the course is shaping up well, although we need rain.

The guys from the Work Camp are doing a fantastic job, thank you very much.

The new reticulation is going great with terrific results, we are now wanting to finish the whole 18 greens.

Next Week Sunday 10th March is our FINAL Summer Golf day and we will be ORDERING MEALS for when we finish.

Walpole Country Club Bowls Report On Wednesday 27th February the Club’s Mixed Championship Fours, choose your own team, was played.

The winners were; Raelene Vigus, Ray Anderton, Janet Smith and Colin Oliver. They won two games.

The ladies Pennants are now finished. The men had a bye. Bill and Trish Crossley represented the club at the Denmark’s Mixed Fours on the 2nd and 3rd March. Bill and Trish enjoyed this event, many of the bowlers came from North Beach in Perth to take part.

On Wednesday the 6th March the ladies play their Championship Singles.

Wednesday 13th March at 12:30, Mixed Pairs Drawn are played at the Walpole Country Club.

Bowel Cancer Awareness Bowel cancer is one of the most preventable cancers yet it is one of the top cancers affecting both men and women in Western Australia. Bowel cancer usually develops from polyps - these are growths on the inner lining of the bowel. Many people have polyps, most of which do not become cancer. However as polyps can be an early warning sign for bowel cancer they should be removed when possible. The best way to protect yourself is to participate in screening as this helps to find polyps and cancer early. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is a free program for people aged 50 to 74 years and a screening kit should be posted to you every two years by 2020. There are a number of factors that are known to increase the risk of developing bowel cancer including smoking, drinking alcohol, having a poor diet, not exercising, and carrying extra body weight. There are also risk factors that you cannot change, such as having a family history of bowel cancer. Fortunately there are things that you can do to help reduce your risk, such as eating a wide variety of nutritious foods from the five groups every day, avoid processed meats (i.e. salami, sausages, bacon), limit your intake of red meat to 3 or 4 palm sized serves a week, and eat plenty of high fibre foods. Not all people experience symptoms with bowel cancer, which is why it is so important to participate in the screening program. However, symptoms may include one or more of the following:

Blood in your poo

Constipation and/or diarrhoea

Abdominal pain and bloating

Loss of weight for no obvious reason

Loss of appetite

Symptoms of anaemia including unexplained tiredness, weakness or breathlessness.
