Reader responses to ‘Welcome to Walpole no longer litter-free’, WW June 8 p.5.

In Hobart, 2008, Walpole and it’s residents were awarded the titles of environmental protection and litter prevention for the whole of Australia. In 2010 Walpole was voted Top “People’s Choice” town for the nation and once again, this time in South Australia, Walpole received the 2014 National Protection of the Environment and litter prevention awards.

In addition to these, Walpole has won numerous

regional and state titles from Keep Australia Beautiful. The Walpole Region was the first in Australia, possibly the world, to have the confidence to declare itself ‘litter-free’. For a distance of 100 Kilometres there are children of 10-11 years of age who have grown up knowing a clean environment at a time when the oceans and highways of the world are drowning in litter. The “Welcome to Litter-Free Walpole” signs have

faced outwards, not for local attention, but in an

attempt to influence and educate the hundreds of thousands of visitors as to the environmental standards of this unique region. It is a cause worthy of support. —Michael Filby.

Dear Mark,

Our thoughts are with you and your

family.

—Lee and Karen

Now Walpole is no longer ‘litter-free’ does that mean we will have to have the ubiquitous placard warning us LITTERING IS UNLAWFUL? We all know Michael’s and John’s efforts have

helped enormously in achieving Walpole's Tidy Town

awards. Perhaps we could be informed of equivalent efforts that have benefited the people of Walpole by the person who was responsible for the scraping off ‘litter-free’. —John and Heather Hills

resourcing structure. “A trails hub can achieve this status through the

provision of complementary mixed-use trails or single use trails.

The trail hub needs to cater for a range of experience levels and user types and requires a suitable maintenance regime in place.” The Shire expects the feasibility study to undertake literature reviews, reviews of existing facilities and stakeholder and community engagement to develop a concept which will be aimed at recreational trail bike participants who seek to explore, appreciate the

(Continued from page 1) outdoor environment and socialise with family and friends. It is understood that the purpose-designed trails

would offer safe and accessible riding environments that also offer the adventure and excitement the riders

seek. The region of the hub would be a welcoming tourist environment that will cater for their trail bike storage and care needs as well as accommodation, hospitality and other family and recreational opportunities. The Shire has also said it is expected that the local tourism and accommodation businesses would experience economic benefits through the attraction of riders from state and national markets.

The Shire has also expressed commitment to

delivering sustainable trails through effective management. “Providing sign-posted, purpose-designed trails with facilities for riders will reduce the incidence of illegal riding activity, the impact on state forest reserves and remove the negative impacts on private land holders.” “Developing a sustainable trail bike trails hub concept will involve investment in time and resources.

“This study provides an opportunity for recreational trail bike users and land managers to provide input in

ensuring the trail hub will meet their needs and for local businesses and tourism operators to economically benefit from such a hub,” the Shire announced.

“Mystified” by number of bays Reader response to letter to the Editor ‘Call for public meeting’, WW June 8, p4.

Dear Editor I refer to the June 1 comments on “Jetty Funded” and Jack Jennings’ comments from June 8. Like Jack I am mystified by reference to 17 trailer bays. I have certainly counted over 30 trailers on several

occasions and I am only a regular visitor albeit with a holiday house and boat in Walpole since 1990. When a concept plan was released in 2013 I made a

submission and there was also a public meeting. The revised concept plan dated 13 August 2013 had 25 trailer bays and provision for “possible” future expansion of that if traffic counters showed a need! The plan notes 8 “green spaces”. Lots of maintenance required? I note also that the project is realigned so we cannot simply drive in and out over the Boronia St intersection, which will create a bit of a shambles if an

inbound and an outbound trailer gets there at the same time or there is someone actually transiting Boronia St. It seems that they are to start the process all over again. Possibly starting with the existing concept that I believe sacrifices utility for cosmetics. I note the raised pedestrian paths that would create speed bumps for turning trailers and probably cause water pooling. I also note on the lower rigging area a substantial grey area which would heavily reduce the turning arc

for trailers lining up to launch and retrieve on the

southern ramp. Then perhaps I am not as skilled as others, I tend to drive down very close to the top of the ramp and then turn uphill to straighten up before backing down to launch. —Roger Sullivan.

The Weekly reported that the Shire of Manjimup has been allocated $30,000 for “planning” towards an upgrade of the Walpole Jetty car park. The Weekly contacted the Shire of Manjimup for clarification on the number of proposed trailer bays to

be included in the redevelopment proposal. No response was received at the time of print. —Ed.

Why Walpole? Local honey sweet success There is no doubt honey is as a popular as ever and with talk around the globe of bee decline and loss of honeybee populations, it is reassuring to report that honey production is flourishing in Walpole. Local honey producer Mark McLauchlin, owner of

‘White Hive Honey’, started with one hive in 2014 and expects to reach one hundred hives in the coming season. Mark told the Weekly “We started with one hive and we were able to extract it immediately, the joy of doing so was great. That was our first honey.”

Mark then purchased another two hives and attended a beekeeping course to gain some confidence in

establishing his business right from the start. Mark said, “We moved the hives down to Walpole about 6 months before we came down ourselves. From there I spent some time working with the person who ran the original bee keeping course I undertook and I still work with her now. We have been expanding our business rapidly since November last year.” When asked why Mark and his partner Jessica chose Walpole, Mark explained: “We came to the

South West looking to purchase a holiday home and visited Bridgetown, Pemberton, Denmark and Walpole. We stayed at Tinglewood Cabins with Gary and Delys, who were very welcoming. We viewed a few properties and settled on one a few months later. In July 2015 we decided to move here permanently.” Mark said that a search for the right work life balance was the main reason for his move, “We always wanted to live more rural and out of the city. Being

made redundant from my city job of 10 years was also a good shove in the right direction,” Mark said.

Mark explained how they chose the business name: “We spent weeks thinking of names for the business then decided that as our hives are all painted gloss white to provide good heat reflection, we named the business ‘White Hive Honey’.” Mark also said that his business has met

expectations with sales and production increasing steadily. “Currently we have clients and orders that we

are filling on a regular basis and I can see more on the way. We do it a little different which is, in my opinion, the key to our success. We do not heat treat our honey

at any part of the process, we cold filter and look after the bees. Save the bees!” White Hive Honey can be found on the shelves of Walpole IGA, the Walpole Visitor Centre, The Walpole CRC and other regional outlets in Northcliffe and Pemberton. Mark said, “We are also ‘Genuinely Southern Approved’, which has been a great selling point.

“The Walpole community have been very supportive of our product given that there are others in

town who also sell honey.” Mark has plans to run hands-on beginner bee keeper courses in spring and raise queen bees for commercial sale.

Walpole Primary School students are set to benefit from new technology thanks to the State Government’s $20 million Primary Device Program. Member for Warren-Blackwood, Terry Redman said Walpole Primary was one of fifteen local schools

to receive funds to purchase new hardware and software equipment across WA. The recent Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report, Students, Computers and Learning: Making the Connection, advocates the

use of technology in schools so children can learn the skills they need to succeed in the future. “Access to technology supports the Western Australian curriculum and is important in developing students’ digital literacy,” Mr Redman said.

Eligible schools who have invested in devices and accessories as integrated learning tools received matching dollar for dollar funds from the State Government. “IT devices are powerful tools for helping students improve their literacy and numeracy skills when incorporated into a balanced education program,” said

Mr Redman.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is finalising its plans to reach more than 24-million people, from over 10-million dwellings across 8-million square kilometres for the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

The census will take place on August 9 and it is predicted to be the largest online event in Australia’s history. Data collected from the 2016 Census will support

funding decisions for services and infrastructure including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment. Data from the 2011 Census revealed that Australians come from more than 200 countries, speak more than 300 languages, belong to more than 100

religious groups and work more than 1,000 occupations. Head of the 2016 Census Program, Duncan Young, said it’s exciting to see the enormous operation beginning to take shape after more than four years of planning.

“It is expected that two-thirds of the population will complete the form digitally, helping to make this

Census the most efficient, cost effective and environmentally friendly ever. “We’ve recruited about 39,000 extra staff and built the systems in anticipation of millions of people logging on to their computers, tablets or smartphones

to complete the Census. “It will be our moment to pause and play a part in helping shape the future of Australia’s education, health, transport and infrastructure,” Mr Young said.

“Over its 105 year history, the Census has helped to guide trillions of taxpayer dollars to every corner of Australia, so everyone has an interest in making sure they’re counted, ensuring Australia remains a world leader in Census participation and accuracy.” Mr Young said that from late July to early August

the majority of households across the country will receive a letter including a unique login code and instructions on how to complete the Census online. “For those people who can’t complete the Census online or wish to complete a paper form, this can be easily requested.

“The Census is compulsory and can be completed securely in around 30 minutes for one person,” he said.

CEDA, the Committee for Economic Development of Australia, an independent national organisation, has released the latest research report on Australia’s economic future. CEDA Chief Executive, Professor the Hon. Stephen

Martin said with less than three weeks to polling day, it was vital that both major parties delivered sustainable, holistic plans for how they will drive growth in Australia over the next four years. CEDA has identified 10 key areas where action needs to be taken which are: innovation; competition

policy; education; workforce participation; infrastructure; fiscal resilience; tax reform; federalism; workplace relations; and climate change. The report states that if Australia is to experience

ongoing economic prosperity it needs to find new sources of employment and income. Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said that the report follows a two-year regional event series held by CEDA in each of the nine regions across the State. “The final report captures the key findings and

outcomes of the series and outlines an action plan for capitalising on opportunities to ensure sustainable, long

-term growth for our regions,” Mr Redman said. “CEDA’s State of the Regions series has generated robust discussion on development and growth opportunities within WA’s regional economies. Mr Redman said that the series has also provided the nine regional development commissions with a platform to outline the growth and development aspirations mapped out in their Regional Investment Blueprints.

The Minister also outlined a strategic approach to

building vibrant regions with strong economies, with the release of the Regional Development Strategy 2016-2025. “Our regions are vital drivers of the State’s economy, contributing more than one-third of WA’s economic activity and 95 per cent of the State's exports,” he said. “As WA’s economy transitions, regional development is uniquely positioned to help broaden the

economy through a focus on jobs and growth. “The Regional Development Strategy provides a

framework to prioritise and progress the development opportunities with the most potential emerging from blueprints and other sources.”

Angel rings have been installed by the Shire of Denmark in partnership with Recfishwest at five prominent fishing locations in and around Denmark. The Shire of Denmark announced Angel rings are now located at Ocean Beach (Flat Rock), McGearys,

Black Hole, Sinker Bay and Boat Harbour. The State Government jointly funded the project, with the Shire allocating funds for custom stainless steel stands, signage, installation and ongoing monitoring. Recfishwest CEO, Dr Andrew Rowland, said

having new Angel Rings installed in and around Denmark is a huge step forward in keeping fishers safe especially as Denmark’s rock fishing locations are regularly fished but are known to be dangerous.

“The Shire of Denmark should be commended for getting on board with Recfishwest’s Angel Ring Program which now sees 26 rings installed state-wide with another 10-20 on the cards for Albany and the South West regions” Dr Rowland said. The Recfishwest ‘Fish and Survive’ website promotes safety and awareness with relevant and

practical information on steps that you can take to make your fishing experience safer. More information

The 2016 Mid Year Martial Arts tournament will take place in Walpole at the Walpole recreation centre on

Sunday June 26. All competitors from the Denmark and Walpole Clubs will need to be at the Centre for a 9.30am start.

The heart stopping tournament will feature competitions in point kumite sparring and continuous kumite, and a black belt grading will also be presented on the day. Sensei Murray Brooker said that training in the martial arts is about training the body to be the best that it can be and the mind is trained at the same time. Murray explained that the tournament is a way of children challenging themselves and learning more

about themselves and others.

“The tournament also allows children to test their knowledge and skills in a safe environment,” he said. The Walpole P&C will provide the catering for the event, to include snacks, morning and afternoon tea and a delicious lunch. The overall Perpetual Trophy will be awarded at the conclusion of the event.
